Portal was good, hell, it was great, that's for sure, but it was in no way the epic masterpiece that people hold it up to be.

Yeah. That joke didn't fly over my head, it hit me in the goddammed face.

I was not speaking of the cake and its memetically mutated unconfirmed status; whether or not that's humorous is left to the beholder.

I was talking about the companion cube, and how you didn't get the joke. It was funny because it was an otherwise unremarkable steel box emblematized with a pink heart and bestowed with a nonexistent value by a computer who tried and failed to stimulate human emotion. The Companion Cube wasn't funny by itself, but was made so by the AI's comically inept attempt at pulling your strings. It was funny for the same reason that it's funny watching a seven-year old try to manipulate a forty-year old: they have no idea how to do so, but they insist on trying anyways, and as such make a farce of the entire scenario.

But as you say, you can't win em' all.

Phew, I'm glad some people get the joke! That was the whole point of the cake thing as well; it wasn't just "Lol random" as everyone thinks, it's GlaDos being hilariously inept at understanding what drives humans. The fact that it was cake specifically was completely secondary.

But there's no really point talking about it any more, any comedy from that has been killed by the over-abundance of memes which completely miss the point. Ho hum.
