Portal was good, hell, it was great, that's for sure, but it was in no way the epic masterpiece that people hold it up to be.

And yes, the meme was annoying as fuck.

In my various discussions on the merits of Portal, I always mention that Portal's greatest flaw was that people over quote it, more importantly, they quote perhaps the weakest joke from the game.

Portal was filled with a lot of great pitch black humor, but a passing comment 'bout a cake gets all the attention. I think I know why, because "The cake is a lie!" is only 5 words long, most people can remember it and quote it at whim.

And memes are a generally demented series of in-jokes, I couldn't possibly pick which metaphorical nail in my head hurts more than the others.

I don't know if this meme is widespread anywhere other than the various GameFAQs message boards (all of them, not just a few hidden boards that nobody likes to speak of), but go to any game board and post a link to something relating to a game that's not immediately brand new (it could be one day old and the meme would occur). A million idiots will fly into the thread and post variants of sentences with the word "old" bolded in part of the sentence. The most common is "It sure is cold in here." but there are plenty other ones people use. Sadly for them, none of them are funny and/or clever, and they're all just being dicks.

Also although it's been said many times, it bears repeating because I hate this shit: "The cake is a lie" is dead. It's been dead for years but people keep beating its corpse. Let it rest in peace already!

...Speaking of letting things rest in peace, SEGA's "We're going back to Sonic's roots for this newest game" meme is getting pretty old too. No you aren't SEGA, shut the fuck up.

Last but not least, referring to Microsoft as "M$". All of its competitors in any business space have equally expensive or more expensive stuff for sale, so this nickname is just stupid. Why does nobody say "Appl?" for example?

I hear a lot about meme's being retarded, and I feel like people are misunderstanding the word. Meme doesn't necessarily limit itself to stupid internet jokes. It's actually a whole lot wider and a whole lot more interesting than that, memetic theory and all, I recommend looking into it.

To weigh in on the whole 'cake is a lie' thing, I liked it. It summed up the dark yet whimsical humor in that game quite nicely. That's a big part of why people latched on to it. It was a desperate message from the doomed to shed light on what was actually going on, but it was also completely absurd. Simple cute idea, fun stuff, probably didn't deserve all of it's repeating, but that happens to everything and you really can't blame the game, the fans are the ones who ran it into the ground. The internet fad meme is the fad running at stupid super speed. Things get ran into the ground almost as soon as they're trumpeted, right?
