COD4

In all of the Call of Duty games up to this point, the main character allways made it, even when he went through hell and back. I got really surprised when the chopper went down and I died of the wounds/radiation poisoning.

MW2

The death of PFC Allen, Roach, Ghost and Scarecrow (Scarecrow is in the mission with Makarovs safehouse, he searches the basement, then defends the downloader thingamajig). I wish I was able to save Scarecrow, but they were just too many... there was noting I could do... :'(

Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30, Earned in Blood, and Hells Highway

Baker's best friend (the tank driver), Allen and Garnett, Desola, Leggett, Franky... And while this may/may not count, when the Mortar round hits the bakery and Red almost dies (but ends up being paralyzed). I got a tear to my eye when Baker had to tell Red about his inability to walk again ='/

Yeah that was pretty crazy for me. It's one of those few moments that made my jaw literally drop.
If you guys are talking about the horse from SOTC, he lives at the end. If you are not talking about SOTC then my mistake.
I KNOW. But we're not led to believe it at the time, are we? Can we predict the future? When it first HAPPENED, my jaw dropped.

Which character's death had a great story impact or freaked you out? At the top of my head, I have two death. Modern Warfare when Gaz got shot and MW2 when Roach and Ghost died.
That was exactly what I was gonna say, but in case of Ghost & Roach it was mainly surprising because no one has still given me a sensible answer for why the hell Shephard shot them.

Any IW staff in da house?
Shepard was pained that he lost 30,000 of his men in the Nuke from CoD4. So, in order to get more recruits into the Army/Rangers whatever, he would instigate war with Russia. To do this, he hired Makarov, a very high power Ultranationalist to conduct a massacre on a Russian airport. He tells Makarov that Allen is an undercover CIA agent, and to kill him so that when they find the body, war would start(Which is why Makarov said that this would be sending a message, and that Shepard said "You will be saving the lives of many with what you start here"). Shit happens, Shepard decides to break out Price because he thought he could use him like he has been using Soap, Gaz, and Roach. Price copies MacMillan word for word the entire level, then nukes the east coast. Instead of the nuke detonating as a nuke, he detonates it as an EMP to cut off all electronics. This does two thing. First, it cuts all of the Russian fleet off from their homeland. Second, it was supposed to stop the carpet bombing of DC, which Price was believing was just about to start. Gaz and Roach decide to storm Makarov's warehouse, where they transfer all the files about Makarov, which presumably had the data regarding the deal between Makarov and Shepard. Shepard kills Roach and Gaz once he has the box, because they would know where it would be, which could boil over on Shepard if they were alive. Soap and Price go to kill Shepard, knife in eye, the end.
Funny part was, Shepard was supposed to come out a war hero at the end of this.
got this from /v/

I think the only character death that really really got me was Eli at the end of Episode 2. You think everything's fine and the action is over when BAM. Watching that scene my thought process was "Oh shit! They're not going to kill him are they? Of course they won't. They can't. ...can they? Oh god, they actually might. Will they? Oh god they are. ELI NOOOO-!"

And as the screen goes black at the end of the scene, you still hear Alyx gently sobbing...ugh, when is episode 3 getting here.

Anyone here play StarFox Assault? Peppy's death really blew me away in that game, and I thought Nintendo was doing something really drastic to the franchise and respected them for it.

Until the end of the game when they pussied out and restored status quo.

Modern Warfare: Paul Jacksons death. It was sad but totally awesome.

Fallout 3: Catherine's death, James' death.

Oblivion: Martin's death.

Manny Escuela.

Granted, when I was doing his missions, I kept thinking "I hate you, I hate you, I hate you, I hate you, I hate you, I HATE YOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUUUUkillyouwithfire..."

Then Elizabeta shot him in the face while being high, prompting me to say "Whoa! I didn't actually want him to die. Not like that, anyway."

It actually was pretty sad when I had to deliver his body to a street surgeon. I felt sorry for him.

Then I hung out with my cousin and all was forgotten.
yeah I know, that was abit much the druggie ***** went too far

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Episode 2. Almost made me cry.
I actually for the first time (in along time anyway) felt genuine sadness for characters in a video game at the end of Episode 2, to top it all off and having to listen to Alyx mourning at the fade to black made me shed a small tear

Well...

Borderlands

T.K Baha(not the worst, but that's when I knew the game was going to go downhill after killing a important character, without any particular reason.)

Yeah..when T.K was checked in on and the end result.. I got pissed and killed each of those bastard little shits with caustic weapons and watching them melt made me feel better inside.

Also I have to mention the Marines in Modern Warfare..
all that work to rescue the Cobra pilot, all that hail of gunfire and the end result?

EDIT: On reflection I was probably a bit harsh with my wording...
Are you done?

No, I didn't like the story because it was all round depressing & no I didn't get very far into the SECOND (not much of an improvement I know) disc. I gave up on the game because most of my time "playing" the game was beset with cut scene after cut scene after cut.... Most of which just kept detaching me further from the game. The more I found the characters moaning about something the more I wanted to see them die horribly.

As for the it's setting, I felt as though none of it was dragging me in. Immersion is one of the most important things for me when it comes to playing games & I found myself not caring about anyone or anything in this world. I didnt care about who was fighting who & as far as I can remember at this time wasn't told why anyway.

In my OP I stated this was my attempt to give them a shot. I played this game with an open mind towards the gameplay because I wanted to see what I was missing out on but couldn't get into it because the "art" of the game.

EDIT: You like the game, I get it. I didn't!

Just gonna be boring and agree with others.

I was actually pretty gutted when Gaz died in MW1, when Ghost and Roach die in MW2 - Ghost was the fucking tits.
Seth in Lost Odyssey - yes not a death exactly but she was the best female playable character in the frickin' game. Also Lirum from LO. Voice acting, all that crying it was really amazing.

Perhaps my most predictable choice, Aerith from FF7. I was about 9 I think and because of naivety at that age you never ever see it coming. I cried the entire way through the Jenova battle - had almost stopped by the end then they make you "Send her off" as such and I started all over again :D

I've never been saddened by a character in a game dying, although it was surprising when Ghost and Roach were killed. I was also shocked at the end of Knee Deep in the Dead when you warp into a room and you're raped by zombies in a dark room. But still, they're just games. It's more annoying than anything else when a character you've played as gets killed. They just don't have an emotional impact because they're still just polygons with pretty pixels. It's not like a movie, where they're real people, or books where you can imagine the characters and identify with them as people. With videogames, they always look like a videogame, and I just can't care about a computer generated image, no matter how dire their story is. And yes, I feel the same way about animated movies if anyone cares to ask.

No not really, and if I was replyng to me won't help matters....

Ugh, you seriouly went into a JRPG made by Mistwalker NOT expected a host of cut-scenes? Besides which, these games do immersion differently to WRPG's, but I'm not going to bother going into that because it has nothing to do with your initial whine. However, I honestly fail to see how you can like Dragon Age : Origins and then complain about Lost Odyssey's cut-scenes both are similar bar each has their representative take on dialogue. And really now, "I wanted to see them die horribly" - again, grow up.

As for the it's setting, I felt as thugh none of it was dragging me in. Well yes, a game with 4 disks isn't likely to give away it's entire plot within the first disk now is it...? The immersion point is subjective, but that's not what your OP said, but regardless, the game is certainly not "emo".

In my OP I stated this was my attempt to give them a shot. I played this game with an open mind towards the gameplay because I wanted to see what i was missing out on but couldn't get into it because the "art" of the game.
Sounds to me like you couldn't get into it because it went beyond the status quo.
