BGII: ToB

Viconia if you choose to stay with her rather than ascend. Not only does she get murdered, but leaves a child motherless after it seems like she'd finally found some happiness

Gray Fox's death in MGS.

Emma's death in MGS2.

The Boss's death in MGS3.

Elisa/Ursala's death in MGPO.

Naomi's death/Snake 'suicide' in MGS4.

I think I see a pattern emerging.

For me it's Shinjiro from Persona 3. First he was there, then he wasn't. It was so sudden...
Also, the way that he died was just excellent.
/thread.

Not shocking, to be honest, but
Claus' death at the end, simply because you'll never see something that sad, EVER!

And, on the subject of Persona,
Nakano's Death. What was shocking was that the game essentially punishes you for getting revenge, as well.

That guy rocked!
And you can't even take his friggin awesome armor!! =(
I like to call him Jesus (mostly because I couldn't remember his name). He also sort of looks and plays the part.
Jesus didn't tackle ogres and stab them to death. If he did, I'd be Christian.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Episode 2. Almost made me cry.
That is so true. I mean, you run all over the place with Eli giving you intel, then they pull a plot twist and he ends up dying. That one had me on the verge of going "The damned Combine are GOING DOWN!" out loud

But, I'd have to say the most surprising death to me was the death of Andrew Ryan. He actually proves your a slave, by feeding him his putter, that one was like a slap to the face for me!

I won't, and can't, mention a name. But here is a quote from Mass Effect. If you've played it, you know it. "It's all right, Commander. I don't regret a thing."

Which character's death had a great story impact or freaked you out? At the top of my head, I have two death. Modern Warfare when Gaz got shot and MW2 when Roach and Ghost died.
Who didn't see THAT coming? Wait... I didn't, but it didn't really surprise me.

Well, I'd actually say in the game 'Mafia' where...
...at the end of the game, you get shot on your front lawn as an old man.
Best story in an open world game...ever
X2, I almost cried :( He was old and had a family!

I have to go with the GTAIV endings

Choosing for the first time whether or not to have money, and seeing the ending i was like:

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT? NO! nononononono! Fuck THAT!

So i promptly reloaded my last save and decided the other option... only to be greeted by another wtf... i sighed... i stared... i damned the credits and rockstar....

then started a new game! (i be damned if i didn't find every single pigeon on the second run!)

Saint's row 2 Carlos. The fact that you need to mercy kill him is just makes it 10x worse.
OMG! I completely forgot about that, but yeah. That was sad, I was ready to blow the shit out of the----I haven't played it in a year.

In Final Fantasy 5 when Galuf died
Maybe i should have seen that coming since he was one of the old heroes that defeated X-death but it was still suprising. And i loved that old man, he was a real cool hero.

I thought Gaz had lived when I played through it first because of the Airplane Bonus level but I was devasted when My Friend told me he died.

also from the frist MW was when Sgt Jackson got nuked and you crawled around, I thought I would live or a copter would come but then I died and I just sat there for 20+ minutes.

In my mind, sev didn't die in Republic Commando. We'll save him in the sequel. Right? Please?

I was surprised by Yuri's death at the end of Shadow Hearts Covenant. You just don't expect that from your protagonist. It was an awesome ending, and I wouldn't have it any other way, but it goes to show that you can't always predict how events will resolve themselves.

Lirum's death from Lost Odyssey and Isara's death from Valkryia Chronicles.

Also, Keats from Folklore. It was by no means a death....but it was surprising. You know what I mean if you played the game.

Oh god, me too. HL2 has the most compelling story I have seen yet.

As for Ghost and Roach, I felt nothing. I honestly didn't care at all. Now, if Gaz died, that would suck, as he was in CoD4.
What about Captain Price? I'm pretty sure he was in almost every single freaking Call of Duty game since the first and I'm pretty sure he died in almost all of them as well. How he died and came back so many times and went from the 1940's to the present makes hardly any sense at all to me.
Reminds me of Lieutenant Dan. The male members of his family fought and died in every American war.
...please tell me you've seen Forrest Gump.
