Gears of War, the story isn't all that bad. But the consept, a bunch of overpowered space marines with overpowered space weapons and overpowered armored suits killing space goblins!

Overdone storylines? Hmmmm.... JRPGs.
I don't get that. "jrpg" isn't a story.
haha, thats a good one.
I wasn't making a joke, I was saying a genre isn't a story.
JRPGS might be unoriginal among them selves. Since its save the world from X because X is evil.

Actually Fire emblem path of radiance and Fire emblem Radiant dawn defer allot from JRPGs since the class system is a total WoW ripoff! and the story line resembles more that of Tom Clancy's HAWX than a JRPG... that that's a plus. maybe... But why em i defending JRPGS Final fantasy is in them, Fire emblem you are small sacrifice.
Final Fantasy isn't that bad, the stories are pretty good.

Left 4 Dead. Theirs lots of zombies you have guns put 2 and 2 together.
Saying L4D has an unoriginal story line is like saying Fifa has an unoriginal story line. I think the game has to actually have a story for the story to be bad/unoriginal. L4D has character motivation not a story nor does it even try too. Because get from point A to point B and gun down everything in the middle is essentially what it is.

I would say the mario/zelda games have unoriginal stories. Rescue the princess/get the sword.

This goes back to the problem many had when some Halo-haters said the story is just about killing aliens. Though that is the main outcome, there is a far more elaborate backstory than that. If you've played all the Zelda games, you'll realise that the series has a very interesting story and a timeline that just twists and turns like nobody's business. To say the story is "rescue the princess" ignores the adventuring heart that made the games so popular in the first place.
Thank you. I'm sick of people saying all Zelda games are the same.

Halo. Here are some aliens. Kill them. Here are some parasites. Kill them too. Oh yeah and all the other faceless super soldiers are dead. Have fun.
Dude, there is so much more than just that. Hell, they have have 6 300 page books about the story plus a graphic novel and a comic book mini-series from Marvel.

Red Faction : Guerilla because it's essentially the exact same storyline as Jak 2.
I was going to say the same thing, but only because it was blatantly swiped from every action movie ever.

I must admit, though... the part where you have to swipe the nano forge from the marauders was wonderfully creepy.
Now you mention it, I totally agree with you on that part.

Something happened to me in that game when I was out in Dust quite early on; I was fending off a bunch of EDF in some abandoned construction yard when they started running away from me. So I turned round and there were about 10 marauders running over the hill towards us, most of the wielding Gutters. I was pretty tense throughout that marauder mission.

Halo:CE
Bad aliens want to capture earth, you are a super space marine (almost)-kill all aliens. Then zombie aliens come, kill zombie aliens and zombie humans before they infect the whole galaxy.
That's it, all there is to it.
Very original [/sarcasm]

Hmmm...

As for recent games, I would have to say Call of Duty 4 or Left 4 Dead. Even though I love them both.

The Soldier of Fortune series also has overused story elements that it didn't do particularly well.

Aliens invade and it's up to you to stop them. Both Halo and Half-Life have this basic story, among other games. Hell, it was the premise for Space Invaders.

World War 2 related games, save for COD: World at War. That game actually impressed me with its story (you get to play as Russians, the real war heroes), its layout and, of course, the mindless fun of Nazi Zombies.

Completely ignoring that the rest of it was exactly the same as its predecessor.

We often cite Halo for being unoriginal for the sheer number of copies and knock offs it's had but we've got to remember that when Halo first came out it actually had a few good plot twists and perks that we'd not really seen before (the Flood came completely out of the blue, we had evil, invading aliens but this time it was an intergalactic jihad against humanity rather than a hive mind or arrogant malice etc.).

If I had to suggest the least original plot line in a game ever it would have to be the Tekken and Soul Calibur games (honestly, how many times can you go on an epic quest for the same bloody sword? surely you would give up after the third unsuccessful attempt?).

Aliens invading doesn't equate to a poor story or unoriginality. It is only an event that happens in the narrative.

Does that mean The Day the Earth Stood Still had a poor story?

Robots rebelling against their masters is a common event. So is a mysterious murder. So is the rise and fall of a man.

So does that mean that Portal, 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Matrix, Max Payne, Chinatown, Touch of Evil, Grand Theft Auto 4, The Godfather, Citizen Kane, and Scarface all have poor and unoriginal stories?
