General Arthur Currie the man who lead the Canadians to victory on Vimy Ridge. That man did what others could not time and time again, and then was forgotten by history.

Murray Rothbard. Famed economist and anarcho-capitalist who was overlooked for major positions in economics b/c of his political beliefs. His teachings and the school of economics he comes from have almost hands down always been correct on the trends of economies. They predict a crash it happens. He saw that the state would always ignore the laissez faire approach for the statist approach even though that would infringe upon people's natural rights so he said lets do away with state for laissez faire and people's rights.

The 18th century Russian general Alexander Suvorov, one of the few generals in history to never lose a battle. Look him up on Wikipedia, his strategies were brilliant and his ability to gain loyalty and discipline from his troops was amazing.

Since Tesla and Andrew Jackson have been mentioned already, I'm afraid I have nothing to really contribute.

Thomas Jefferson is surprisingly underrated though, even though in the later years of his presidency he made some insanely stupid decisions.

Otto von Bismarck for uniting Germany
Gorbatsjov went into anonymousity after 1990
William the Silent, leader of the Dutch revolt and made it to the throne of England
Frederick I (the great) of Prussia for his militairy successes and for withstanding Austria, Russia, Sweden and France. Also, he was very enlightened at that time.

Unfortunately I can't really come up with anyone, but I can tell you who's definitely not underrated:

George Carlin.
Yes, an important historic figure, sure.

Nicola Tesla.

He has a measuring unit named after him, I'd hardly call that underrated; I admit he didn't get a Nobel prize, but neither did Edison, and we all know their decisions are often off.

Erwin Rommel.
Was venerated by the Nazis and still today often comes up in conversations as "sure they were a horrible bunch, but you have to admire Rommel's military genius". And he's about the only Nazi that we continued naming things and streets after.

Alan Mathison Turing
His work is taught in every first year of computer science at universities world-wide, there's the Turing Award and 2012 will be the Turing Year.
Miffmoff said:
Oscar Schindler, the industrialist that saved over 1000 Jews from the Nazis using his own money to bribe soldiers.
We cleared that up already.

How about Benjamin Franklin.
Oh how I hope you're being ironic, the guy is on the fucking five-dollar-bill. There's no way to rate someone higher, except for naming your capital after him.

Has statues and momuments of him in almost every city in Germany. You mean internationally? What's North Dakota's capital again?
FC Groningen said:
Frederick I (the great) of Prussia
He's called the Great. What would we have to call him so as not to underrate him? The Humongous? The Gigantic?

Audie Murphy. He isn't the MOST underrated for sure (he had a movie career) but he hasn't been mentioned, and not a ton of people have heard of him. Look at his Medal of Honor citation:

Nicola Tesla. He did a shitload of inventions, and some got 'stolen' by other scientists(or so they say). And he invented the Tesla Coil. How awesome is that? It's like a Van de Graaff generator, only diferent, and can be used to zap US Grizzly tanks.
He invented the lightning cannon. The frikkin lightning cannon. Someone even put it to use making MUSIC! Ghost busters with a lightning cannon. If only it had tits and was on fire. This guy didnt invent modern electricity, he bent that raw power to his will! Theres a picture of him sitting insulated in a room reading a book while a collosal tesla coil shoots huge bolts of lightning at the walls. Thats hardcore.

I'm going to say Napoleon Bonaparte, no one ever seems to remember the fact that he nearly conquered the entire world, I mean if the British hadn't stopped him alot of the world would be speaking French instead of of English right now.

Osamu Tezuka. He's the God of manga, and no one else has created so much manga that's still so good, and yet any manga fans I meet have never read anything of his.
What manga has he created?

OT: I do not have much idea, except all of the teachers of the Conservatory of Chihuahua. They deserve to be on history. Particularly Liparit Terzyan and Ahmed Anzaldua.
He was the guy who wrote Astro Boy, which is often considered the "Original" manga. But all the standard Anime qualities (like Big eyes, and reality bending hair) were started by him.

Bismarck

I'm not familiar with most capital names of the US. Anyway, if you ask around, almost no one knows the guy. Might be a thin line, but except the Germans and history adepts, no one seems to remember him.

Frederick

I believe only the historians refer to him as "the great".

Edit: Also, a lot of guys either named themselves or got named "the great" throughout history. I bet you don't remember a lot of them.

I fail to see why Ben Franklin is underrated. He's on the frickin' 100 dollar bill after all.

How about Lord Mountbatten eh? I've done tons of stuff of nominal importance.

It's not a person who really did anything in their life, but I think Marie Antoinette gets more crap than she deserves. The whole "Let them eat cake" thing was a blatant lie created by an angry France. That was more of Louis' fault for the poor conditions. Sure she was probably too immature to handle running a country, but she didn't have much of a say in anything.

I just don't think it's fair that she was (and still is) the poster child for spoiled incompetence in 18th century France.

Well she did veto almost everything, supported the surpression from the clergy, spended way too much money and worked against the enlightning. Can't say I can be very possitive about her.

I love that guy! He's awesome. Best character in Heroes, hands down. That's where I learned his face, and his name, and then I started recognizing him in everything.

Oh, and Stalin. He killed more Jews than Hitler, but he isn't the one who is famous for it, because he was an ally in WW2, and everyone turned a blind eye to the purges.
