I have never hated an anime character as much, it absolutely ruined NGE for me.
Nothing in anime comes close to the contempt I have for Denise Richards character in Starship Troopers.
People adjust better from trauma in an environment where they are supported (within reason). Shinji has none of that. In both the Manga and the Anime his home life was something that was NOT in anyway helping him to emotionally heal. Throw puberty into the mix and son, you got yourself a recipe for disaster.
