Square is convinced their main demographic are people who like hyper feminine empty slates for protagonists.
people buying the latest ffs arent exactly debasing that notion
Well that's a bit of a logical fallacy.

Or something.

Lets say my favorite thing about your games is you have awesome summons.

My least favorite thing is you have stupid characters.

I'm buying the game because the first thing outweighs the second thing.

Basically their games are doing well despite their actions, not because of them.

With the exception of 14 and 13 >_> <_<. But look at 13, it sold real well but was so bad they apologized for it and tried to make amends.

Thats what I meant maybe I didnt word it properly in the cutscenes Vincent could do all this stupid cool shit and in the actual game could do naff all (usually this dosent bother me but he did it all the time throughout the game) and it is a so bad its funny as hell kind of game, I was reading a joke guide while playing and it kept pointing out all the stupid crap in this game that made no sense like giving me an A rank in an objective even though I completely failed it. That said it was playable which surprised me as I was expecting technically atrocious gameplay but it was just laughably bad instead. I also like how they gave Cait Sith his own crappy stealth section yeah lets take probably the least liked character and put him in one of the least liked shoehorned sections in games that sounds like a good idea.
My problem wasn't with the flips and shit, I kinda liked that actually.

My problem was with the constant apologising for everything ever to everyone. It was over the fucking top. It became a drinking game.

Anytime someone apologises take a drink, if they actually say sorry: take 2, if it's not entirely clear why they are apologizing, take 3.

You won't make it past half way.

Going by protagonists only: Tidus
He's incredibly stupid but not in any charming way because he just refuses to stop whining.
Laguna was a doofus, but he was a loveable doofus who wanted to be a nice guy.

Tidus is like an annoying 11 year old trapped in a slightly older body. And you're stuck with that asshole for nearly all of FF10.

I can't stand Zidane. In fact about the only character I liked in 9 was Freya.

I can forgive half the cast in 12 simply because the characters were barely important enough to genuinely grow distaste for.
Huh. Exactly my thoughts about FF9. To this day, I do not know for certain what it was about Zidane that pissed me off; I cannot rationalize it. By all accounts, I should have liked him a lot more as he's similar to Locke, one of my favorite characters from FF6.

And I loved Freya. I actively looked forward to seeing her (so naturally, she's out of the party for half the damn game) and half the scenes she is in are great. Especially when she's chewing Zidane out for being dense.

The only comments I'll make about FF12's cast is that you're basically correct. They were so bland and forgettable that it's not worth getting bothered over. However, I will say that Vaan immediately reminded me of Tidus (the look, the "Stupid teen" attitude..just toned down by 90%) and Lightning would later remind me of Ashe. A lot.

It's like a Line of Succession, but for Suckage.

I forgot about that lol yeah ah Vincent and Lucrecia the sorriest romance ever in videogames, I also liked the bit at the end when they get everyone back together (because the fans would be annoyed if they didnt) and they get the whole power ranger cutscene going before the fight ah happy times. I still wanna play FMV Vincent though that guy was a beast.

Squall isn't the worst to me, he's just the least interesting, like the writers literally forgot to give him a personality so he just apathetically reacts to things.
I wish this were true, according to Wikipedia they designed Squall very deliberately to be a "different" kind of JRPG hero. There was no accident in his lack of personality, they intended him to be that way... it's very, very saddening.
I'll be honest, as much as I hate FF VIII... I really can't vote for Squall. Hell, I genuinely sympathize with the guy. Just look at who he's forced to tag along with for the entirety of the game: There's Zell, the hyperactive man-child who can easily get a guest spot on Jersey Shore; The blissfully ignorant airhead Selphie, who seems to blunder through or trip over anything with a grating childlike glee; Irvine, the cock who will hit on anything with 2 X chromosomes and screws up the one and only job he was given that would've probably ended the sorceress's threat right then and there; Quistis, who is just a plain tease (although to be fair, Squall's lack of hormones or a sex drive probably helped); And Rinoa, the also willfully ignorant ditz who should never be allowed to formulate plans on her own as his "love interest" who spends a good chunk of time talking about nothing but Seifer (whom also has a weird man crush on you). And let's not even mention his mission, which went from a simple kidnapping assignment organized by a woefully inept terrorist group that the Scooby Doo gang could give a run for their money, to a globe spanning "save the world" quest interspersed with acid flashbacks where Squall is forced to relive the genetic memories of his ancestor a la Desmond from Assassin's Creed. If I were him, I would've been an apathetic jerk too. Hell, tweak the game play (i.e. removing junctioning and drawing magic) and make the game more self aware via Squall breaking the 4th wall by pointing out RPG tropes, questioning deus ex machina moments (you know the ones) and plot convenience, and calling other characters out on their bullshit and FFVII could've been a very different (and entertaining) game that deconstructs the typical JRPG.

But, I digress. My vote goes for Tidus or Vaan. Both are annoying characters with annoying voices that could very easily have been cut out or replaced to the betterment of their respective games.

I hate Tidus and Squall, my reasons for these have probably already been said in this thread already so no need to repeat an explanation.

Snow (cheesy hero act gets old real quick)
Vanille
Tidus (most annoying brat ever. almost ruined FFX for me)
Hope

A lot of people here mention Vaan, but seriously, his character was so bland, I cannot even remember a single thing he did in the game. I think I just ignored him completely, and he didn't affect my FFXII experience in either way. Balthier and Ashe were ace though.

Vaan...why did we even have him? He's so...like Tidus but without any redeeming qualities or personality.

While I'll admit Tidus from FFX deserves a mention but Yuna was much worse in X-2. Acting like Charlies Angels if they were the girls from full house, all the while whining how not really tidus had a girlfriend AUGHHFIUDASHF. I seriously couldn't stand the story of this one all the characters are unlikable. At least X had Auron.

Really, by the standards of characterisation set by western RPGs, Final Fantasy has always had rather shitty characters.

The early games have either personality-free blank slates (FF1, FF3) or are filled with stereotypes and chiches (FF2, FF4). The later games try to have deeper, more interesting characters but mistook depth for angst and retarded-ness. Generally these games will have one exception to the rule who makes things bearable for the player (Auron from FF10, Balthier from FF12), unfortunately they're rarely the main character.

Of course, the middlepoint between these two areas is where FF6 and FF7 lie, and these games are the ones with the good characters. Although I will admit there are some weak characters in FF6 and FF7 (Cait Sith anyone?) there was never a moment when I wanted to throw them in a gas chamber.

OT: Everyone but Sazh in FF13. Squall and Tidus areguably improve (even if only by a minor extent) and Vaan is pretty decisively sidelined by the rest of FF12's cast, but the poorly dressed bunch of halfwits in FF13 remain annoying throughout, and to make matters worse the game focuses on them rather than the undeniably fascinating twin worlds of Cocoon and Pulse. Given how stupid they are, it should come as no surprise that they end up doing EXACTLY what the big bad wants and dooming the world, only to be saved by a deus ex machina. And then they had to make a sequel to this terrible, terrible story...

I've only played Final Fantasy IX so for the rest of the protagonists I'll just go by what I've gotten from my brief time of playing Dissidia.
In that case: Fuck you Cloud! AND FUCK YOU TIDUS EVEN MORE!

Yeah. I see a lot of people saying Squall. If you play enough of FFVIII, he does develop. And they work his assholeness into the story. Like, the reason he is how he is is to do with his childhood. No spoilers here. And he does change later. He's still quiet, but he doesn't respond to everything with silence or dickheadedness. That part might warrant as a spoiler. Depends. Shh.

I've played the entirety of ff8 I still don't like him xD I think it's because the other characters seem so vibrant next to him.

I vote Irvine for main character.

I probably won't survive the night for saying this, but my vote goes for Cloud. I don't mean to annoy anyone by saying this, but I can honestly see nothing at all that's good about him. To me he's basically Squall without the development and without any interesting qualities whatsoever. All through the game all he seemed to do was moan, and anything that wasn't moaning was completely monotonous or needlessly harsh. I can see people loving him for the nostalgia factor, but while I do quite like FFVII, Cloud really weighed down what could've been a much better game to me.
Agreed. Cloud is pretty much one of the reasons I never finished FFVII. But his level of irritation is capped by his lack of an actual voice. So I'll have to go with Hope as the worst.

7 and 9 were the only games out of the series that I didn't care for.

I'd have to agree that Cloud was one of the worst main characters if only because he wasn't a character. He thought he was, but then learned he wasn't who he thought he was. 7, as a whole, was not that good of a game, compared to the two previous "localized installments" before it of 4 and 6. General Leo and Palum/Porum die in their respective games? I shed more tears for them than I did for Aeris...

9 I couldn't play for longer than Disc 1, so I could argue that the cast/story of that game just didn't make me interested to continue the game.

Hmm...

In regards to worst protagonist, I'd have to say the Warrior of Light from the first Final Fantasy. Actually, the guy from III, too. They just have no personality, it's like the player picked their class and...

Oh, that doesn't work?

Umm...

Well, The Warrior of Light sucked in Dissidia, too!

Serious answer, though, I'd say that Squall is the worst, but not for the reasons everyone has been saying. You see, Squall does develop as a character; the problem is, aside from being so damn unlikeable, that the story is so focused on him that he becomes a black hole that sucks the character development from everyone else. Not ONE character in VIII is well-rounded or developed as a result, all because of Squall's stupid coming-of-age story.
