Mines in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. So hard to use,
and the random mish-mash lying around EVERYWHERE in Oblivion. Knives, forks, plates, bones, rakes, it's basically just scenery you can pick up.

A lot of good entries here. I'll go with one I haven't seen yet:

- Half the part stats in Chromehounds. I actually put some time in to find out what they did: a cockpit's condenser capacity was its ability to run flight parts in that game. Problem was, there were all of two of said parts available, and all they did was lift your hound a few feet off the ground. Zero use whatsoever.

- Haha, Sentry totem. Good call, someone earlier. Theoretically useful, never used.

- People who said stuff from Modern Warfare 2: I've seen the blast shield used maybe three times in all the time I've played. To the person who said the shotgun attachments are worthless, I'm told they're awesome in Hardcore modes. I saw the stats on them, they keep their damage out to a long range.

hmmmm....

The X something from pokémon games, as others mentioned before, I agree with you.
let's see what I could add... Dry mushrooms in Mario RPGs? The Everstone since the second generation of pokémon? Fame system in many RPGs, well a lot of 'social' elements in RPGs actually? The smoke ball from Super Smash Brawl?.. I can't think of many more quickly enough, hopefully I didn't forget a blatant one.

To someone who said knives were useless, I hope you don't include RE4's and TF2's knives (First is the best choice against Krauzer, second, well... spies)

Fun little game from Westwood studios called Nox. in the 6th level or so you get an indestructible weapon that plays a central role in the plot. after that, unless you need a ranged attack, even the super powerful enchanted weapons seem meh by comparison. Beat all 3 campaigns in one month.

Not an "item" per say but people love to spam the whammy bar on sustains on regular notes. My friends never believe me when I say it doesn't give them more points.

That one energy gun that vaporized people in FEAR 2. You got like, ten shots for it throughout the game, and never when it would be most useful.

Did anyone really use the 10mm pistol in Fallout 3 at all after getting another weapon? Compared to most other guns, it's a pea shooter.
BB Gun?
Ahh, the BB Gun. If I want to make killing radroaches challenging, it's my go-to gun.
Red Ryder LE BB Gun in Fallout 2 could shred Power Armoured Enclave like nobody's business. I want that one back.

Most useless was the Chinese Pistol or the Experimental MIRV. The former was too weak to get the job done, and the latter was expensive overkill of the highest degree.
Really? Damn, I wanna play Fallout 1 and 2. Finding them will be a challenge...
You can get them from Steam for like $10.00 each

Personally, I find all weapons obselete since getting in A3-21's Plasma Rifle Fallout 3. Bear in mind I've have yet to do any dlc, so i'll wait until then to pass judgement, as I love the Gauss Rifle because I have just began Anchorage.

The shield in Prototype.

Really, how many people actually used this thing? It blocks your vision, only works from the front, and doesn't take much damage before being destroyed. It's much easier to just jump over most attacks then to block them with the damn shield.
YES. The shield was a useless piece of shit.

Food and chems in Fallout 3. Food only heals around 5 points of health and to have enough to save your life means weighing you down, and I like hoarding weapons. And chems raise your strength and lower everything else. I'll only use chems if I have to much weight on but I can't drop items because they are all of high value. Well, stimpaks and radaway are good, but you never use radaway and you end up wasting stimpaks when you're a level 30 and have 160 of them.

Definately traps, poison, and buff potions in Dragon Age. Even the lyrium potions I sold off in bulk. Horses in Oblivion was a good answer, also beer and to a lesser extent wine. Even as a Nord I hardly ever used them, easier to just get some health potions. Also, pretty much everything in Fable II. I love the novelty of it and parts of it make me want to rush to my tv and play it as I type. But honestly, Jobs, Clothes, the Dog, parts of Combat, Weapons, Families, Experiance, all of it was so badly implamented it was worthless to even bother with. Great ideas with piss poor execution sums up most everything in the game. Shame Fable III is going with the, "fuck all you who actually play our game, we're going to cater to the casual crowd that likes us, which coincidently dosnt even exist" approach.

The dog from Fable 2. Doesn't attack worth anything and digs up "treasure" which 9 out of 10 times is a used condom. I am still upset you couldn't get rid of it.

I enjoyed using the silenced one, and I frequently used Colonel Autumn's 10mm. I dunno, maybe I'm a pistol person.

OT: I never used the temporary status upgrade items in any game. (X(stat)s in Poke'mon, the drugs in Fallout.)

Oh, I have a good one. Emotions in Fable 1 or 2. Why did they bother with them? Sure farting in someones face is fun but did you use it all that often / at all? I used them all maybe once then never again.
Karthus the kill-stealer! Sorry. Anyway, but i did use them a lot on my roommates character, (his xbox). I made everyone love me, then i killed everyone i could. Pointless and stupid maybe, but entertaining. Of course, i never saved, but i used them i suppose...

The dominion rod in Twilight princess stands out as the least-useful-outside-of-really-specific-circumstances-where-you-need-to-advance weapon. It moved statues, which is all well and good, but outside of the few statues (which you could count on one hand) in the one dungeon you get it, it has no use at all. It sticks out like a sore thumb when nearly everything else has some sort of functionality in combat or traversing in different ways. The double clawshot felt like a gimmick too, they weren't really trying on those last few dungerons (for weapons at least). The last thing you get is something that makes your sword shiny, and do more damage. But only in that one specific part of the game again. Yay, I guess?
Don't forget the Spinner. God that thing was useless. And I felt so cheated when I got the Double Clawshot, Zelda games are usually so creative with that. Hell, they could have even pulled a Wind Waker and given us a Grappling Hook, that would have been better. As for the last dungeon making your sword more powerful, I think it's because that dungeon with Zant was clearly intended to be the final one before Ganon was shoehorned in. Mind you, as far as shoehorning goes, that one was fairly well done, but still.
