I totally agree, considering they were also made up by someone within the last 30 years
While nobody really knows where the nunchaku originated, it definitely didn't get "made up" 30 years ago.
look it up, they have stuff that similar but the stuff you see in movies is just that, stuff you see in movies

no real historical evidence has been found to know where they were first made or WHEN they were first made

Im going with the movie variations made up within the last 30 years, the common idea of nunchucks

Throwing knives are possibly the best out there. Easy to conceal, ranged and quiet.
Aha! I see you, [villain]! Just hold perfectly still a moment!
*thunk*
Sorry, I missed. Hold on.
*thunk*
Dammit!
*thunk*
Right, I've run out of knives. Just hold on; I'll be right back!

Other than that, katana. They can be absolutely devastating when used by someone with the proper training to wield them effectively, but if you don't, you're just as likely to horribly injure yourself as you are to hurt anyone else.

Haha, I see what u did there.
Or I don't. If ur trained in using throwing knives, ur very accurate. Also at moving targets.
Anyway, if ur not trained, why'd you try using a martial arts kinda weapon when you could just use a gun?

There was a program on British TV recently, and it mentioned Chinese scripts detailing how explosives could be fitted on to a Shuriken, fashioning it into a primitive stun grenade. Maybe not a lethal weapon, depending on how much gunpowder you use, but it would probably have had a tactical implication.

Anyway, the most useless martial art weapon in combat would probably be a Shinai, seeing as it was only a bamboo training sword used to practise Kendo.

I hope most people know a ninja never uses a "useless" weapon so that gets rid of any of the answers here. Any weapon a ninja uses, they use it for a weapon. You can, however, argue which one is the least effective. With that, I'll argue that it's nunchucks because they are probably harder to master just to be able to use a weapon that's not that lethal.
First off, the OP stated martial arts weapons and Ninjas aren't the only martial artists in the world. Second, a good chunk of the stereotypical Ninja weapons are glorified and quite possibly made up. After all, how many people can actually claim to have seen a real period Ninja at work? None.
I edited for the first and fyi, ninjas are martial artist and they used almost, if not all of the marital weapons. For the second, um... other ninjas? Families today, still have proof of what ninjas were like back then. Since most of the ninjas were actually farmers or something similar, they used weapons that were made from their farming tools for the most part like the sickle or even the kusara-kama. Most of their weapons are real, the only ones that aren't are the ones that are impractical.

Ok.

First let me say the shurikens are not ment to seriously injure or kill anybody. They're a distractive device. You throw them in peoples face and kick their balls while they aren't looking. I would like to see anybody not being a little affected by having a sharp metal disk flung at their face.

Second swords are one of the best, most versatile and most lethal weapons in close combat.

Third I say that boxing gloves are pretty useless...

With the poison you dip them in.

Tonfa are a defensive weapon, allowing you to block blades and heavier blunt weapons with your arms.

Nunchuks when handled by anyone who isn't Bruce Lee.
At that point they become weapons of mass destruction.

From a pragmatic point of view it's swords, they aren't easily concealed, they aren't very effective and unless the distance to target is tiny they put their wielder at a massive disadvantage. Especially in the age of the gun.
but can swords jam, backfire and run out of ammo?

no... so i have to disagree with you on that one.

most usless would probably be blow guns...THOSE are hard to conceal have extremely limited range, extreme inaccuracy, sometimes the actual poison on the dart becomes useless becuase the dart doesnt hit properly, a little bit of dirt in the chamber sets off the darts accuracy, oh and you can snap them in f*cking 2.

No, but they can snap, blunt, bend, notch or get stuck...

A broken gun is club, fit a bayonet and it's a spear. Yes I am clutching at straws...

I was surprised to see how many people said Nunchukus. There're only useless when the person using them is useless.

A skilled martial artist would be able to put almost anything to good use in a fight.

yes it really is real but it is also completely useless in a fight then agian what penis would be as a weapon ?

but turns out the fighting monks or mongols would eat tiger penis beleiving it gives them "Super Natural Powers" in the bed

This may be slightly off topic on an off topic forum discussion, but anyone here seen that show Deadliest Warrior? Now, while I'm not going to say that they have any real credibility in what warrior class could beat another, but they DO test the lethality of the weapons being utilized. The latest episode pit Yakuza against the Italian Mafia... and one of the weapons they tested were in fact the nunchuks. Personally, I don't know where they get the people who decide what weapons to test, but for the ones they do, the results can be surprising. Who'd have thought that an eighth of an inch of steel in a samurai helmet could completely deflect the killing power of a viking axe, or that a battle-tested katana that can cut through 2 human torsos CAN'T simply slice through chain mail?

I did look it up. And people have been using flails since the 17th century. That's basically what a nunchaku is, only except for a ball, it's another wooden stick. But to say that the idea of attaching a stick to a chain that's attached to another stick only came about 30 years ago, just isn't true. Were they used as weapons in the 17th century? It doesn't appear that way.

it originated somewhere in Asia, but the nunchucks that are seen today were made up within the last 30 years for kung fu movies
Damn, you shouldn't have edited your post. I liked the idea of swinging around nunchicks.

Anyway, I already responded to this a second ago to somebody else.. so I'm not going to repeat myself, if that's ok.

My knee-jerk reaction was "nunchucks" too, but I think three section staff would take the cake on this one: it's a bo staff in three sections, chained together. Seriously hard to use.
