Personally I think it's a savage hypocrisy. The mother only serves one year of a four year term because her lawyers come up with some cock-and-bull sob story but, as people have already pointed out here, if it was the father he'd have been jailed for ten years and practically lynched when he did get out of prison.

i'm of the mind that calling it "basic human rights" is wrong it should be "basic human privaleges"
then they can be taken away if you can't behave like a basic human being.

This cannot work. As a society, we stand and fall how we treat our bad people. If we treat them barbarically, then we, too, are barbarians.

Human rights can and must not be mere privileges, because then, for what other things can and will they be taken away? "bad" political opinion, for example? Being sick too often? Wrong skin color?

(keep in mind I'm still for much harsher punishments for rape. It's a joke that a guy can brutally rape a woman, with several witnesses, and get less than six months. Rape generally is underreported and underpunished. All we'd need here is the law coming down harder on rapists than, you know, people who download a mp3 from the interwebs.
