Ok, so..get this. i was in the midst of watching Ninja Assassin on Blu-ray, my mom walks in and clearly doesnt like the violence involved and leaves. near the end, she comes back in and tells me that there is something wrong with me for liking violence and says that violence is just as bad as watching porno. and she told me that I either have to have my headphones on to watch those kinds of movies or have it on a ridiculously low volume.

Ok, Its one thing to say that you don't like it. thats fine..you dont HAVE to like it. But to tell me off and make me feel small for taking any kind of enjoyment out of it cause she thinks its mentally sick. that is really unfair. I don't know what to say to her. shes just so narrow minded and negative.

i don't watch movies like Saw or texas chainsaw massacre or any movies that are soley based on nonstop dismemberment in the worst fashion. i like stuff with Ninjas cause they're fukn dope and stuff like 300. what the hell is wrong with that? and of course any use of guns she thinks is sick too.

Does anyone else get this crap? what did you do?

I dare you to be watching porn the next time just to prove a point.

OT: Not really; my mom's not a big fan of violence, but she can handle it. If it ever gets to be too much for her, I'll just watch/play the movie/game when she's not around. That's the best advice I can give you.

Why does it bother you that you have to wear headphones? I wear headphones when gaming because my television echos throughout the house and the sound effects are just *bang bang bang!* which are annoying to others, yet crucial to me. And it's not that big a deal. That's just what moms do. They get mad at every little thing and can turn anything you do into a lecture.

Take the sarcastic approach: find one of her vices and compare it to violent films and pornos. Maybe she's a smoker? Maybe she likes sexually-suggestive songs? That's what I used to do when my mother disapproved of something I liked. I would get punished for my sarcasm but vengeance is sweet.

Just wear headphones. Most people say things that are a bit over the top when they are angry.

Well my I am lucky in my mother and I have a lot of parallel tastes (we like the same movies and shows, she even likes dexter more than I do) so I've never had that problem specifically but there is something really... disquietening when you are watching something with your mother and they spring a sex scene on you. You can't act fazed by it but you can't just skip it either. This is partially my issue with sex scenes in general since they serve no purpose beyond "they be fuckin'" which can be achieved far more tastefully have one of them exit the others room fixing their shirt or whatever.

Some people don't like violence.

Any amount of over-the-top violence is always good in my book. Your mother only has the fault of thinking that somehow not cringing at over the top violence (which is basically all of Ninja Assassin) makes someone fucked up or willing to engage in it themselves.

Thats always kind of annoying and a bit patronizing.
I never got that from my parents, who actually encouraged me to see the Evil Dead films, but I have met many parents when I was growing up who had similar thoughts as your mother does.

At least you don't always have to deal with it. The majority of your life will be spent living away from your parents (if it doesnt already)

"Wow, Mum, you were right! This porn stuff is fantastic. They have cups and everything. Well, one cup at least..."

But anyways, this is a debate that has raged for thousands of years, and will until the sun turns into a smouldering raisin. We all went through it at some time and one day you'll be seeing this sort of argument from the opposite side.

My advice is to try and deal with it in some way that allows you to do what you want without overtly pissing off your parents. You'll clash with them some time, and it's better to be over something minor and fixable (such as turning down the volume or wearing headphones) than your sudden and worrying fondness for heroin.

i dont have an issue with using headphones, But when you have a really nice sound setup, I would like to make good use of it. so its a little annoying. fortunately i am working hard at getting a room to rent away from home in the next month or so. so it won't really be an issue. but her opinion will stay the same.

Mothers always seem to be like that.

I just ignore her complaining about my movies, it's not actually like it means anything, she's stating her opinion on fiction... FICTION!

My mom LOVES movie violence. She gets so excited. My boyfriend and I took her to go and see Zombieland and she was sitting impatiently during the previews asking us repeatedly "why the hell aren't there dead people yet."
My mom is awesome ^_^

I think I remember watching Kill Bill with my mom

no wait, it was Texas Chainsaw Massacre

On topic, as long as you're living in her house (or apartment.. i'm not entirely sure), you sorta have an obligation to listen to her. I'd say move out as soon as possible if it bothers you THAT much.

My mom doesn't like violent entertainment either, but she still thinks that Gran Torino and The Hurt Locker are good movies.

I'll tell you what's wrong with 300, it's the most fucking boring action movie of all time made for people who think putting some kind of strange filter over your images will make you 'artsy'. My opinion is better and correcter than yours, okay?!

Now that that's out of the system: Confront your mom with your thoughts exatly. Why does she want to ruin this for you? You're not getting excitement over actual people or animals getting killed, it's simply fiction and the biggest appeal is having something completely unrealistic, something you wouldn't get away in real life happening. Especially knowing you don't really harm anybody that way.

Except for all the starving children you could've saved with the millions of dollars you spent on making your movie.

PS: Give both the original Saw and the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre (70s) a try. Not very bloody (the latter one showing about a coffe-cup worth of artifical blood), but very thrilling and the former has a great twist ending.

Wait, how would wearing headphones fix the violence that is on the screen? Doesn't that kind of contradict what she wants?

Anyway, either find a separate place to watch movies without interruption or try to reason with her. While you do either of those, watch some movies that she doesn't object to (i.e. less violent ones) with her.

Same thing sort of goes on at my house. Except my parents just say 'Thats horrible' to which I reply 'Yeah I know'

The thing I find a bit wierd is that my mum watches stuff like CSI, and in one episode the forensic team cut a brain in half and she was fine watching that. I got her to watch a bit of Friday the 13th where Kevin Bacon gets a spear/fire poker through his neck and she couldn't watch. I just thought it was funny.

Interesting fact, the blood in that scene was actually sheeps blood.

just ignore her. my mom doesn't like my addiction to crack, but I'm not stopping anytime soon.

seriously though just ignore her. she has her opinion and she's allowed to have it. my girlfriend is constantly making fun of me for the bands I like, but I just let her talk. the sooner you can relize some people can be jerks over their opinions the sooner you can brush off anything they say and just laugh at how ridiculous they sound. which, luckily, will piss them off more. the most insulting thing you can do to someone is ignore them
