I just thought of something. There have been several films saying that god and the devil, heaven and hell exist, and no one has batted an eye.

But I wondered, have there been any movies saying that atheism is right? That there are no gods or anything supernatural?

Maybe there have, and I just haven't seen them. If that's the case, then please enlighten me.
Watch "the invention of lying" pretty good movie.

Also i think you might mean a movie where someone believing in god/the devil sort of gets proven wrong by someone, since well most movies that doesn't bring up the theme could seem atheist.

You could try watching "house" aswell, house, the main character is an atheist in that series. ^^

I quietly groaned at your title. You have it backwards.

No, there wont be anything like that. Because there is nothing to prove. You can't "prove" an absence of a belief. That's what atheism is: The absence of a belief in theism, hence A-theism. /facepalm

Exactly what I said (well, almost, I'd say that while not believing in God is a belief, if it's a belief, i.e. something that doesn't require you to explain yourself, then you can't prove it).

THERE WAS NO MOVIE. A TV series, but no movie.

But seriously, it seems to be a sort of subject that Hollywood skirts around.

I swear Ricky Gervais made a half decent movie about Atheism.
Your probably thinking about "The invention of lying". No one can lie, so no one ever made up the bible. it's a movie worth watching. ^^

There was a film called "The Ledge" I believe.
It absolutely failed and only gained something like 5 thousand dollars.

And how would that film turn out?

"There is no god."

"Well shit."

Roll credits.

Oscar material right there.
As opposed to...?

"There is a god."

"That's pretty neat, Bill."

Roll credits.

Ha, because the MPAA would just love to see that.
They will NOT pass that, they tend to be rich, old, god-fearing, right wing and all.

Really? Including that part mentioning the minor Deities from the Halls of Asgard in The Restaurant at the End of the Universe? And the second coming of the Great Prophet Zarquon?
They're not really a universal God (I think he states in the 3rd or 4th that "the gods were actually created a few seconds after the universe began, rather than as they claim, the previous week") so it's more of a powerful deity than a creator.

Also,
Hello, sorry I'm late. Now how are we for time? *universe ends*

The documentaries that New Atheists make probably. I would definately not count Contact (though I did like that movie, especially the 'mood of the world'-scenes), since the message is basically that atheists need to get of their high horse and open their minds.

The problem with making an 'atheist story' is the same reason why I don't buy into the New Atheist idea that God can be disproven: It is physically impossible. One can never scientifically prove that anything does not exist. You can do tests and say how and where you looked, but that doesn't prove it isn't there, just that it can't be found the way you describe it. And when we get to an almighty god, there is not a single thing a human can do that could prove his non-existence. He's almighty, so no rules apply to him. If your experiment doesn't find evidence, all the believers need to say is that god doesn't want to be found by this experiment. There's no way to disprove that.

In movies, this translates into the difference that a Christian movie can just show a demon, an angel, or a miracle and that makes it a movie that shows Christianity as correct. An atheist movie... can NOT show a demon, angel or miracle, but that doesn't exactly demonstrate those things don't exist. Most people don't see supernatural entities in their own life either, and many don't consider this proof they aren't real. You can perhaps make a movie that displays one particular bit of religious dogma is wrong, but odds are there are plenty of other religions that don't believe in that bit of dogma either. I haven't seen Paul, but it sounds like that's what it's doing: Giving an anti-creationism message, but not all of Christianity denies evolution, nor do some other religions.

So by construction, it's very hard to make an atheist-affirming movie, and if you do it's bound to be as obnoxious as the worst of the religious-affirming movies. Not because the atheist message is wrong, but because any belief that something exist can be confirmed in a movie by showing that thing. Not showing the same thing in your movie on the other hand, does not prove that it doesn't exist, and you're going to have your characters just brazenly claim it doesn't exist all the time. That doesn't make for a very interesting movie.

The only one that comes directly to mind is The Golden Compass, though that's not as explicitly atheist as the novels/sequel novels.
FOr some reason I thought of this movie as well before I read your coment. How odd right?
But it would not matter if there is a film that says there is no god / heaven / hell etc. It's a perspective sorta thing anyway =/
