I don't what they call this stuff, or if it could even have a genre, but I suppose you could just call it "pop".

Was at the gym one day, when this abysmal "song" started. I'm guessing the idea behind the tune was, this guy had seen a girl he liked the look at while at his dive of a local and probably completely failed to even say, get her number, or even talk to her. Idiot, even I haven't managed to be that lame in a while. So what's one guy to do? Well, as the lyrics suggested he was "searching for her all over facebook". Yep, because doing that is so nice and heartfelt and not at all creepy.

It's crap like that I hate. All this stuff that's trying to sound all cool and modern but ends up sounding, well, mindless and stupid.

The only good death metal is made by Dethklok
Your statement shows you have no idea what death metal is and you do not understand it.

Dethklok isnt death metal, its just metal with low vocals.
Seeing as text is oftentimes incapable of expressing tone of voice, I can't tell if your statement is pretentious or not.

And so I shall simply ask, what am I not getting?
What the genre is.
So what is it?

I wasn't aware that EVERYONE can hate mainstream...?

I don't really hate any genre. Either I like a genre, or it doesn't bother me much. I can hate lyrical content though. Anything obscene to be obscene, like most rap, is really annoying. I mostly just don't like individual bands, the worst have been posted (Attack! Attack! and Brokencyde are some of the worst things I've ever heard).

I'm one of the few people not absolutely bothered by Beiber (or just don't lie about how much he bothers me). I don't listen to his music, but I'm sure as hell not joining any youtube "metal mulishas".

I can appreciate most genres of music, but some just get on my nerves. Examples:

- Crabcore (Attack Attack)
- Really extreme metal (Cannibal Corpse)
- Bluegrass country (...anything with a banjo)
- "Gangsta" rap (a lot of modern rappers)

That's pretty much it. I can appreciate pretty much anything else.

I like how even the bassist is squat fucking his instrument. I mean, this is coming from a bassist so I don't want any bassists to get pissed at me, but we're not hardcore. At all. We're not meant to be. We're supposed to have rhythm not just claw away at the thing like we're angry at it. That's fine with heavy riffs and powerchords on guitar but it always bothers me when bassists try to act like guitarists.
Funk bass =/= all bass

Just because we hold the rhythm doesn't mean we have to sit back next to the drummer and bop our heads.

I hate metal. Sorry, but I can't stand it.
You should be dissapointed with your self! Metal is the one and only good genre left in the music industry! Everything else is made through the clicks of a mouse, not acctually practising and playing on instruments.

Plus metal is fucking awesome!

What?! I'm a metal fan myself, have been since metal first came alive, but to say that "everything else" isn't music is just... ludicrous. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdYj7dMYwxM

Watch this video please, then give yourself a good hard slap on the face :)
Yes, I think I have been stupid. I was meaning all this crap teenager music, and that was really awesome! I like other genre's too, here's a band that I like.

There is no need to state something that we have already agreed on.

Quality in music is not irrelevant.
Music is the composition of melody, rhythm and timbre. Already here some of the poorer genres of sound fall through.
Polyphony is vital. With no polyphony, all you get is simple music.
Poetry is also used in combination with music, this adds to the quality of the music.
Variation is very important.
Pardon me, but I have not yet found myself agreeing with you.

I do not think that music would need melody, timbre or rhythm as they are but three aspects of what music can consist of. I take it you do not hold musical projects which only work on one aspect in very high esteem? There are a lot of artists who do not care for polyphony or other aspects of music - be it rhythm, timbre or texture, melody (artists purely concentrating on pitch also exist) which, I dare say, are not very simple in either structure or production wise. I am not clear if you base your idea of quality springing from a combination of melody, timbre and rhythm. Which brings me to hip-hop: while it might lack in variation of texture, a lot of the attention goes to rhythm and melody. If you can't spot them then chances are you are not paying attention.

Variation is important, I do give you that - but I find it doesn't mean variation between instruments, as there are whole worlds of variation within every sound and instrument, which can constitute into intricate pieces. Whole worlds outside those three elements you mentioned, and I think many people ignore them completely. I do think that there is a lot to learn from pop music, however, there is a lot more in other kinds of music.

While poetry can add interest I find it is only a trend of adding such into a musical piece.

Clarification on the quality argument: qualities can exist in sound, quality does not. Preference is only a perception of quality.

Minor edit: I have no clarity as to whether you do or do not listen or attribute "quality" to rap, techno, modern pop and so on - after re-reading your initial post, I have become confused.
So you will not agree with the classical works of Mozart and Beethoven being of higher quality than, let's say a sexist and violent poem with a back beat?

What I'm saying is he's trying to look hardcore over doing what the bassist should do. By all means if you're a decent bassist go mad, just be sure you're doing your job right.
Yes he looks stupid, but that doesn't have anything to do with him being a bassist.

I wouldn't say I hate it, but I kinda dislike metalcore. Some of it I find quite good, but for fucks sake people stop putting breakdowns in your songs.

I would have said Slipknot six months ago, but i was listening to them recently and I found them rather light.

I cant say rap, because I like Sage Francis and Jay-z.

AS for country, I dont like anyone in particular, but I think it can be pretty good. Is "tears in heaven" country? because I like that

Metal, well im listening to We Came As Romans right now and loving every second of it, so probably not
See, that's the slippery bit. He says "pick a genre". Well, I might like some country, but that doesn't mean I like Toby Keith. Or I might like a lot of ska, but think the label bands are sell-outs. Coolio was okay, but most rap is too fast to catch the words, so what's the point? A lot of exceptions in there.
I agree. This thread is stupid. Youre Stupid ALuckyChance. (thats what you were going for right?)
More of a "This thread is designed to breed hater trolls" but since that's stupid, yeah.
