No, this isn't for some obscure almost non-existent genre of music like 60's techno or BosaNovaStep, this is bands that when you heard for the first time you said 'why is this the first time I've heard this?'
I'm writing this mainly because I have Rage stuck in my head. Not rage against the machine, just rage. youtube them.
Also, threshold. I was thinking of a name for a metal band that sounds like it would be a prime example of a metal band name. I thought of threshold. A short search of wikipedia revealed the name to be taken. I looked them up, and they were amazing. Like a heavier Dream Theater. Also, Dream Theater isn't unknown, but they're a lot less famous than they should be.

My guess is because they're a German metal band that didn't have a song in the Matrix soundtrack. Unless I'm looking at the wrong Wikipedia page.

There is such a huge selection of music for any taste, not all from your region or country.

Agalloch. They're an American Black/Folk Metal band. That's almost unheard of.

Chevelle. A million times over, Chevelle has some amazing riffs and deep, metaphorical lyrics that surpass the writing abilities of Maynard James Keenan.

The Black Keys, everyone knows at least one of their songs (Howling For You, which is being used fucking everywhere), but they've been around for like a decade or so and they're just getting big now. And it's not even big big, they're still kinda small time

I've only just discovered Dresden Dolls. Like, no more than a week ago. I immediately fell in love with the music - how the hell has this band slipped under my radar for so long?

Any band that demonstrates rhythmic complexity (nowadays it's mostly metal bands that do this, which is a shame because I would love to hear more diversity) or extreme musical knowledge.

They are vastly overplayed on my local radio station kind of annoying. But they are good.

As for my contribution Black Stone Cherry.

Saitama Saisyu Heiki. The best remix artist I have ever had the pure pleasure of listening to. Look what he did with the super mario bros. theme!
I can't believe he isn't more popular on this website. I mean, seriously, what rocks are you living under?

How is Gogol Bordello not more loved? Everyone I know dislikes them.
Everyone I know absolutely loves them. Deservingly so.

Damn, I came here to post that. I believe that if those guys were born a little earlier, they would've been massive stars. Nowadays garage rock/blues doesn't get all that much airtime.

a hawk and a hacksaw.

I hate to be the one to say "you know! back in my day, music really meant something!...." but the older I get, the more genuinely I enjoy and respect music with older traditions (klezmer, blues [the real stuff by the way, non of that electric stuff], jazz, so on and so forth) and emphases in technicality and precision.

Damn, took one of mine(Bad Religion)

I could list you any of a dozen punk bands, but I'll just say one:

These guys aren't really well known in the scene except for locally(Boston area)

For metal, I'd have to go with Falconer. Badass viking power metal, occasionally sung(actually sung too, not growled or shrieked) in Swedish... Finnish? I have no idea but it's one of the Scandinavian languages.

For rap/hip hop. Sage Francis, another local artist.
