well music that i know of and atlest very few others around me seem to know of is:

Gorgoroth
Burzum
Darkthrone
Mayhem
Satyricon
Arch Enemy
Children of Bodom

but most of this is that people I talk to are very often lame and those of my friends that have heard of this is all because of I told them about them.

But there is one song I bet no one here is familiar with:

Dj Mads - Jesus Elsker Alle Barna

I dunno how mainstream they are in america, but here in oz it seems nobody has ever heard of streetlight manifesto, and I really like 'em.

Other than that... Karnivool, The Herd, Mystic Roots, Atreyu, and The Wombats are a few that I listen to some people have never heard of, but I'm not really into much hyper obscure stuff.

BTW: anyone who likes (A) should check out (B):
Ska: Streetlight manifesto
Heavy rock/Light metal (they're kinda borderline there): Karnivool
Left-wing political hip hop: The Herd
Getting stoned: Mystic Roots

If I mention ska everyone around me goes "what?" As for bands, well pretty much everything I listen to is unknown by most people around me. Except for the golden oldies like Pink Floyd or The Who, not that they like it, but at least they know it.

I guess mostly stuff I've gotten into since I started college:

Neurosis
Fugazi
Rollins Band
Quicksand
Helmet
Failure
Dillinger Escape Plan
Red Sparowes
Skinny Puppy
Serart (but to be fair it's just a one-time collaboration)
Sonic Youth
Tomahawk and most other stuff involving Mike Patton
The Armed
Bad Brains
Botch
Melvins
Converge

One of my friends is a big Melvins fan, another I introduced to Helmet, Failure, DEP, and already listened to Sonic Youth, but that's really it.

I've heard of all of those! Most are on my iPod except for Operation Ivy.

'Rise Above we gotta Rise above'

OP: Pretty much my entire iPod, if anyone recognizes these artists you get the worlds largest internet cookie, forged in the fires by Hephaestus.

Big Black
Scratch Acid
Unsane
Sleep
The Birthday Party
The Radiators
Skinny Puppy
Einsturzeinde Neubaten (Why are there no Umlauts on my keyboard!?)
Jesu
Head Of David.
Suffice it to say, I have The Birthday Party's "Release the Bats" on vinyl, as well as Skinny Puppy's "Too Dark Park" album.
Einsturzende Neutaben I have listened to on occasion, although I am not a great fan.

My contribution to the topic would be:

Stan Ridgway (of Wall of Voodoo "fame")
Danielle Dax
Red Lorry Yellow Lorry
Pigface,
PIG/Raymond Watts
Lydia Lunch
My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult
Space

I like a few German bands whose music could best be described as 'medieval rock/metal',and among them "Tanzwut" is probably the most obscure. Think metal meets industrial meets bagpipes... FUN! ^^

Not many people who listen to mainstream music would have heard of a lot of my music considering I listen to nothing but classical. If I said "Largo from Xerxes" most people would have no idea it's a piece by Handel, or Grabmusik is a piece by Mozart. It's nice to know that when others don't.

Same here! It's a shame too, because he really makes brilliant music.

Also Pain of Salvation, noone I know ever seems to know of them.
