I'm a huge Devin Townsend fan but none of my friends have even heard of him or his old band Strapping Young Lad.
Same here! It's a shame too, because he really makes brilliant music.

Also Pain of Salvation, noone I know ever seems to know of them.
Glad to see another fan!

Did you see the lyrics from 'Detox' on the computer in Fallout 3?

Unfortunately not, since I haven't played Fallout 3. Pretty awesome that it's in there though.

Most of mine are pretty mainstream, but I'm quite a fan of Reverend and the Makers, Modest Mouse, Animal Collective now, and Iron & Wine. The latter three are thanks to Questionable Content, though admittedly I also enjoyed Iron & Wine's song 'Flightless Bird, American Mouth' when I heard it in Twilight. It's not actually a bad song, really good for those who are into indie folk. Sadly, my housemates are all mainly into electro and clubhouse. Only one I can name actually enjoys indie stuff, like me...

EDIT: Incidentally, our newest housemate happens to enjoy smoking weed, so I want to try and find out what music she listens to, if any, when high. Mainly because it's one of my goals to at some point before I hit 21 (so a year and three quarters) to sit smoking weed with a bunch of friends listening to some good stoner music ;D.

Yeah it's a cool little easter egg. There are lyrics from Fear Factory on another computer too.

Someone in Bethesda likes thier industrial metal.

So many kinds of Anime music, of which I can't even pronounce the name myself..

It always goes like this:
- What track is this?
- Something from slayers/bleach/one piece/... , don't know the name of it.

Hate to be generalizing but people who hear hardrock/metal music come up with the weirdest bands ( taking this example off of people in my school )

Most of my music, I think.

Aqua Timez, Billy Talent, Phil Collins (shuddup), High and Mighty Color, Tokyo Hotel, Black Stone Cherry and Watchout! There's Ghosts are not well known around these parts, I think.

The Aquabats.

And all good nerds should know them. They have a freaking song called freaking Nerd Alert. About being a nerd.

A lot of what i listen to is jazz and avant-garde classical stuff sooo...yeah, it could be considered a little obscure.
I'm really getting into minimalist stuff at the moment like Steve Reich and Philip Glass.
Check out Philip Glass' Metamorphosis suite if you've got the time and/or inclination.

Not many of my friends know of Scatman John, but the internet seems to.

I probably know a few more country singers than people might want me to. What can I say? I was raised on it.

Same here =/ everyone knows "Knights of Cydonia" from Guitar Hero, but nothing else. I really like their new album, and Origin of Symmetry :D

It seems like a lot of the music I listen is probably popular in some other country, not not so much here, and even less so within my circle of friends.

The Airborne Toxic Event
Andrew Bird
Battles
Beck (Damn my age group.)
British Sea Power
Cake
The Cribs
Death Cab For Cutie (Ugh >.<)
Doves
Explosions in the Sky
The Flaming Lips
God is an Astronaut
Infadels
Minus The Bear
Murder by Death
The Postal Service
Radiohead (Yeaaah...)
Ratatat
Rooney
Say Hi To Your Mom
The Working Title

Some stuff that I know is well-known elsewhere, but around these parts, these guys are practically unknown.

(And... if I've already posted here, whoops - remember the thread and the awesome music contained within, but dunno if I posted or not xD)

Korpiklaani is my favourite band, none of my friends know who they are save one who hates them. Understandable seeing as I live in Queensland, Finnish folk-metal isn't too common.
