The problem with bass is that most people are only ever exposed to the instrument in the form of backing for rock and pop songs, in which the bass is indeed normally pretty boring. This has also lead to the idea that anyone can play the bass and that it takes no skill. However, there is a world of genres where the bass comes into its right as an interesting instrument. Personally I regard it as having a fuller 'voice' than the guitar as it touches a far deeper register than the guitar does. Guitars alone to me just sound sort of flat and 'weak', lifeless. Can't stand listening to a song that doesn't contain bass since it just feels like something is missing and the song isn't as engaging.
