The bass is a surprisingly versatile instrument.
All of these are solo pieces.

This last one isn't a solo piece though.
You should check out some of the stuff by Victor Wooten, he has consistently awesome music going on.
Skip to 1:30 (2:50) on the above video if you don't want to listen to the calm (jazz-improv-y) part. Though in this one he sings as well.

The problem with bass is that most people are only ever exposed to the instrument in the form of backing for rock and pop songs, in which the bass is indeed normally pretty boring. This has also lead to the idea that anyone can play the bass and that it takes no skill. However, there is a world of genres where the bass comes into its right as an interesting instrument. Personally I regard it as having a fuller 'voice' than the guitar as it touches a far deeper register than the guitar does. Guitars alone to me just sound sort of flat and 'weak', lifeless. Can't stand listening to a song that doesn't contain bass since it just feels like something is missing and the song isn't as engaging.

Well i used to play one in high school, but i stopped. It was a really fun instrument to play. Too bad they're so big they won't fit anywhere in my house and so expensive that i can't get one anyway.


I also play the piano a bit. Had a small casio keyboard but i somehow managed to lose it.

My main influence in the guitar-playing atm is John H. Clarke, he does some awesome things with classical spanish songs and with a guitar in general. I started because I needed an outlet of some sorts and now I couldn't imagine going too long without playing.

Mostly into guitar since it's the instrument I actually had formal training with and learned classical guitar and what not. I prefer to play more folk/ambient in fingerstyle since they sound so amazing on acoustic. With my electric i'm mostly into alternative/indie rock songs. Catchy tunes that aren't overly complicated or needlessly complicated.

Piano I haven't spent as much time on but it's a fun instrument. Wouldn't say I have a specific genre I like to play cause I know quite a few songs. I tend to stay away from the huge classical songs since I don't want to make a fool of myself

And harmonica that was given to me by my uncle (who also taught me beginner guitar). That I pretty much learned on my own and well you can only really ever play blues so . Will def take it with me if I ever go to prison!


Cliche but Jimi Hendrix totally got me into guitar and while I haven't played anything even close to sounding like that his funky take on guitar is what drove me at the start. Then eventually my love of music just took over. And how long... well I don't know exactly. All the instruments I got when I was 7 but harmonica and piano were on and off. Piano I know I didn't play for 2 years straight while I took classical guitar courses and honed my skills on that instrument. Harmonica I just played all the time whenever I wasn't home or playing in my neighborhood.

I play guitar, have done since I was about eight, which makes it about 12 years I have played for now. Have studied music for 2 years out of highschool and have a Diploma in music. Favourite genres to play are blues, jazz, and hardcore. I dabble in other instruments, harmonica, piano, drums. I play a Gretsch 5120 with a average Marshall 120DFX with a few pedals. My favourite guitar player would be either Kenny Burrell or Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Played piano for about 13 years now, mostly classical stuff. I've really been getting into Chopin, and I don't think I've played something that isn't one a nocturne or a mazurka in, I don't know three years maybe.

I've also been trying to teach myself Ukulele which is actually pretty hard considering I live in California, where I haven't been able to find a single teacher.

I've been playing drums for about 4 years. I play an electric kit so as not to annoy the neighbours

I'm decent (maybe grade 5 or 6 standard, for those of you that do grades), but nowhere near as good as I should be given how much I practice.

I try not to focus on learning any one style in particular, my teacher tells me it's important to be able to play a bit of everything, but I like playing reggae and ska music most, even though it's not the type of music I normally listen to.

I was in a band once, but we were awful, so I quit.

I'm also learning guitar, as of about a month ago, and I plan to learn piano

I've been playing the violin for ever. Now I mostly play worked versions of whatever songs I like. I can play about half of Paul McCartney's career work from muscle memory.

I tried to learn guitar for a while but fell out with it before I actually got any good.

I play bass. There's alot of similarities between us OP. I took it up too because I liked the cool sound in the background of the music. I like playing it because it's almost like it forms a link between drums and guitar. It follows the beat of the drums (I know all instruments do but I think the bass stays closer) and the riff of the guitar.

My inspirations are Flea(Oh my god the riffs that man produces on a bass guitar blow my mind.)
and Chris Wolstenholme of Muse.

The types of music I like range through soft rock to hard rock, and some metal (the likes of Alter Bridge or Alexisonfire.)

I've been playing the violin for ever. Now I mostly play worked versions of whatever songs I like. I can play about half of Paul McCartney's career work from muscle memory.

I tried to learn guitar for a while but fell out with it before I actually got any good.

Not that I'm good at any of them, but I own a bass guitar and two guitars. The first guitar is an LTD Explorer, second one is some Behringer crapguitar and the bass is an Araya.

Started with the bass when a friend of mine needed a bassist for his death metal band. Jumping in to that kind of music when you've only played the bass for two weeks was a challenge, but back then we practised for around 12 hours/week, so I improved quickly. Picked up the guitar when I discovered my old school had a recording room. I took care of the singing, guitar and bass while a friend did the drums.
Singing is my main musical "instrument". Do mostly growl/harsh vocals, and while I'm not the best at controlling my voice, I think it's fairly good. Got a Myspace for the songs we recorded in school(www.myspace.com/wentbad), though looking back I wish we put some effort into the recordings rather than play it once and roll with it.

Would like to get better on the guitars, but I lack the patience to be practising.

Mainly listen to thrash metal and punk.
