Well i love the game and its twist especially the whole Shepperd,Roach,Ghost scene, but the story is still kinda incoherent good but incoherent like GoW2.
THEY'RE SINKING CITIES WITH A GIANT BRITISH MAN!!!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_altitude_nuclear_explosion

apparently you can knock out satellites in space ( ISS) with a high altitude nuclear explosion (the one in the game) via emp.
My conjecture is that the shock wave was a visual representation of the EMP (created for a more cinematic scene.). The resultant shutting down of electronics may have caused the instability in the ISS.

Of course what I've just said is bs because EMP's DON'T PHYSICALLY BREAK SHIT.

Because Activision says Infinity Ward can do what ever the fuck they want without consequence.

We also have to take into account the fact that the diagram of the missile from one of those cutscenes shows that it was carrying multiple nukes, I think it looked like around 8-10 warheads. That adds up to a lot of explosive force.

Bad physics engine.

Seriously though... okay, "seriously" though, I watched the cutscene in YouTube. The explosion looked like it happened in upper atmosphere. What if it just pushed lots of air to space?

EMP crippling the Russian army -part though... Yeah, no. Maybe Russian army isn't as technologically advanced as Western armies, but I'm pretty sure they're ready for an EMP.

EDIT:

Since when was Air-Force 1 a C-130?
Actually, Air Force 1 is any plane with the president inside. That white-blue Boeing just gets to be it most of the time.

Did not know that. And I used to be in the Air Force, shoulda payed more attention.

Anyway, that C-130 could not have been carrying the vip in the panic room, since you're given the order to rescue him before the plane crashes. You can see it being shot down as you're walking across that covered bridge in the beginning of the level.

I'm not really too bothered about the plot holes. They obviously sat down as writers and thought "how can we justify helicopters falling out the sky around you?" and went from there. That's OK in my book :D

Well im not a distinguished scientist, but heres a simple formula for how shockwaves travel in a vacuum a la COD MW2.

O+R < D/S = WAP

O = Object
R = Range
D = Distance
S = Structure

WAP = Wizards a' plenty.

no army is ready for an emp, they haven't figured out how to combat it yet.

secondly military's are just more reliant on electronics. (mutually assured disruption on top of destruction)
the one who launches the emp first would win. You would disable their nukes MAD isn't completely true.

"Geez, it sure would be nice to remember what the instructor said about the safety measures... Hmmm... Let's try this."

"Sorry guys, my bad!"

According to Wikipedia page on EMP:

"It has long been known that there are many ways to protect against nuclear EMP (or to quickly begin repairs where protection is not practical);

The page also says this though:

"but the United States EMP Commission determined that such protections are almost completely absent in the civilian infrastructure of the United States, and that even large sectors of the United States military services were no longer protected against EMP to the level that they were during the Cold War."

Interesting. And here I was, thinking that people usually make things more resistant as time passes, not less. Though I guess that the collapse of Soviet Union was a pretty good reason for the EMP-resistance to become less important.

Better question to ask here is "Why the HELL did russia go straight to invading America?" or better yet "How the HELL did intelligence agencies not notice the massive logistical trains that would be needed to mobilize an appropriate invasion force to stride at the US mainland???"

Let's think about this for a second.

One:

If terrorists, even american terrorists, were to slaughter lots of civilians, the first thing that would happen is diplomatic talks. Two major nuclear powers DO NOT go to war. They do economic sanctions and go after eachother's economies.

That's right. World superpowers go for the passive-agressive approach, they fear all-out nuclear war too much.

Two:

Intelligence agencies can't be everywhere. But you'd better bet your ass that they're watching military movements in troubled countries. Even if the US satellite network is down... why did the brits, the french, the germans, etc., not see it? There would be MASSIVE buildup for weeks, if not at least a month beforehand. You cannot 'quitetly' move thousands of troops around. never mind vehicles, materiel and the goddamned supply lines to bring the beans, bullets and bandages to the people who need them. The ammount of fuel to keep attack hellicopters in the air for more than a couple days is staggering, never mind the armored personel carriers and everything else needed to make an invasion force work.

Even in 'Suspension of Disbelief' intelligence assets would have found out about troop movements and materiel movements long before the first planes took off.

So... you can come back to life and fight off hundreds of soldiers by yourself in MW2, and you're worried about physics?

Because

Captain Price's mustache gave the nuclear warhead supernatural powers, which allowed it to break the laws of physics

So the dude in space may have survived when he turned into the incredible hulk?

OT: I liked the story & understood it pretty well. I was shocked into near dissbelief when Roach & ghost get killed. I sat there with my mouth open the whole way through that scene
