Seriously though... okay, "seriously" though, I watched the cutscene in YouTube. The explosion looked like it happened in upper atmosphere. What if it just pushed lots of air to space?
EMP crippling the Russian army -part though... Yeah, no. Maybe Russian army isn't as technologically advanced as Western armies, but I'm pretty sure they're ready for an EMP.
