I would have lol'd at that scene but it didn't even deserve a lol. I kind of expected some guy to run up and kick the Dad in the nuts and say "You've just been punked!" To me that scene carried no emotional weight what so ever and wasn't even visceral to any degree. That was worse than the old horror movies where they would stab someone and then there would be no blood on the knife or an off screen killing.

There's worse on TV before the water shed.

After having sliced open the guts of countless unbaptised children with a scythe in Dante's Inferno a few weeks back, MW3's little cutscene here does little to impress me.

Are they doing this purely for shock value and to boost sales through controversy? Probably. Is it going to give Fox News another reason to make themselves out to be idiots? Yes, and for that I respect Infinity Ward even if I don't care for CoD. They're one of the few devs not shying away from what the media says they can't do right now, they deserve a pat on the back.

Can we please lock this thread or at least get the title changed so it's not screaming spoilers out across the forum?

This shouldn't be seen as something to laugh at, in fact I've argued about the role some children should play in games and how they should have more serious roles in the Western sphere unlike the Eastern one where...I'm just gonna stop there before I go any further.

The point is we see children as the most purest creatures on the planet: young, happy, and so peacefully ignorant of the horrors of the world around them. Humans are the fifth Great Ape species and we're inherently social creatures as well as each of us having an internal sense of paternal or maternal instincts. If we ever see a kid getting picked on, whether we know them or not, or first instinct is stop it and come to the victim's aid. We see children as many things, all mostly pure and ignorant but when one succumbs to the many things they need to be ignorant to, s*** hits the fan. Someone making fun of your son is ground rules for an beat down but the killing of innocent children is the grounds for a full blown war of vengeance. The same way of how a kid being forced to fight his way out of a war zone might stir up some strong emotion, so should the fact that a child dying have just as much emotion.

I applaud Infinity Ward for being mature enough to actually address the horrors of what war would be like on the civilian populace instead of treating it like it was just for kicks or to kick the puppy. More developers should be willing to take chances like Infinity Ward did with MW 3 and I hope to see this as a sort of call to arms for more serious plot in games.

EDIT: Yeah I just watched it and it was nowhere near as dramatic as I thought it would be. It's just so....meh. I know I shouldn't say that but all there was during the whole bomb scene was there was a girl, then there was an explosion, then someone farted, and that was it. They could've made this a whole lot more dramatic but they didn't. I think Infinity is trying to recreate what made Modern Warfare 1 so special. It's like Infinity asked his friend what he thought of the story he wrote and his friend is like," Wow that nuke thing is great, you should do that more often," Infinity does but fails to capture the emotion of it, he just does it without thinking.

Oh come on. Why was there a need to put that scene in there? You see a little girly girl all happy, waving her hands at the birdies and twirling around all happy and shit in this kind of game, you know that something bad is going to happen. It's not even executed that good, so why was there a need to put it in there to begin with..

It's absolutely pointless. I could see a scene like that in a game like Heavy Rain, where it would actually be important. But, like the airport massacre in whichever Call of Duty game it was (MW2, I think?) it's there only for shock value, and so they can pretend to be mature.

This isn't mature. It's childish.
Hell, No Russian was actually important to the plot. Exactly what was this supposed to be about? World War III is going on, which I would think would be much more interesting and dramatic then a few little terorrist attacks.

Which leads me to another point that bothers me about MW2 and(likely) MW3. The focus on Makarov. Makarov is apparently still bombing things in MW3(or so the trailors and this video imply), despite the fact the Red Army is rampaging across half the globe. Shepherd had a blank check "Every cent of which is going to be used to take out Makarov". This would make sense, except for the fact you're in the middle of fighting(and presumably losing) WW3. Once WW3 breaks out, I would think even the biggest terrorist threat on earth would take kind of a back seat to that.

But everyone keeps on acting like Makarov is the most important thing out there. He's a horrible, evil person who kills for no reason, no argument. The problem is, even if you catch and kill him, it doesn't change the fact you're in the middle of World War 3 and killing him doesn't stop the war.(though I have this horrible feeling that's exactly how MW3 is going to end).A few bombings(even ones that kill cute children) is nothing in comparison to fighting a nuclear armed superpower that's already heavily damaged much of the US East coast(even before the nuke) and numerous European capitals.

i don't see controversy, but i see developers trying to add unnecessary shock value in a game where it isn't needed. i understand if it was the middle of a battle and one came across a child who died in the crossfire to show the horrors of war maby it wouldn't be so bad, How ever a family being the first casualties by car bombing even though the car bomb didn't look like it was big enough or anywhere near a valid target unless it was to kill the mother and child raises some questions.

and as i watch read these comments people are not looking behind the scenes:
Where were they to be near a car bomb? it looked like a simple street, if it was a police station or political office i could understand but it didn't look so.
Two, for a car bomb that was fairly small was it not? the camera should have been disintegrated along with the car and girl, but if you pay attention, besides the family and a street sign....nothing was damaged, was this family targeted specifically? and if so, why a car bomb?

like the "no russian" level i found this not as controversial as it was a scene that raised too many questions and possible plot holes.

So let me get this straight. The girl that died in the dead island trailer, everyone seemed perfectly fine with that (as far as i know).
But a girl dies in Call of Duty, and everyone breaks out the pitchforks and torches. Am i understanding this right.
This is partly due to Dead Island not being as popular and mainstream as Call of Duty, which in it's last installment, makes you go through an airport and kill (or not, you do not even have to shoot) civilians. The Dead Island Trailer would have gotten a lot more attention if it was more well known.

OT: Meh, They did worse things in MW2. This was also poorly done, maybe it would make more sense in context.

Yeah, people forget that some Actually do play the game for the Campaign and not it's multiplayer only.

actually, No Russian acts more or less like a plot DEVICE and opens too many holes.
1. If he is CIA and undercover he obviously has no American ID on him. How did the russians figure that out.
2. Even if they did, they had no reason to attack the US because countries don't hold other nations responsible for acts of a few murders.
3. Even then the Americans could have told the russians what was going down with the commie terrorist and avoided WW3.
4. How did the leader figure out he was American anyway? they never explained?

so really the whole catalyst of the modern warfare games after the first one are built on a really flimsy premise of a plot.

Fucking deplorable - and not because a child dies in a cinematic; my disdain has nothing to do with the actual content and everything to do with why they did it and leaked it. Just a naked "trainwreck" publicity stunt designed to generate controversy and buzz as we approach the release date of MW3.

What's on the table for MW4? Rape? Gas chamber? Assassinating the president? Shooting up a school? Ethnic cleansing?

I'm generally not one to say "it's popular, therefore it's shit". I enjoy Halo, Gears, GTA, etc. Up to this point, I didn't care for CoD because I'm not that interested in the setting and multiplayer (though the community and publisher are quite awful). But now? This series is officially toolbait.

Congratulations, child death scene. You've turned me into a CoD hater.
