I think at this stage, xbox live is an incredibly hostile place to come to if you're new to it.

There was the period before they introduced 'parties' and party chat, when (unless in private chat with one other person) the only option of communication was to speak to those in the game with you. From this, early friendships were made, and people could easily bond without the inhibitions of talking in person.

Then along came parties, and people withdrew into their friend groups. The only way I tend to meet new people to play with on live is either on the freak chance people actually use the in-game chat, from actually friends of mine recently joining live, or from being introduced to friends of friends via these parties. I know some games *cough MW2 cough* have tried to bring back forced in-game chat, but it's too late. The community has changed, and these chat channels are ravaged by assholes.

TL;DR: Live was good for newbies, then 'parties' came and it got bad.

Unless you have friends on the inside to welcome you, it's gonna be a tough start.

I believe most of the hate is more towards CoD4 and 6 players more so than XBL in general. Most games have decent gaming communities (L4D, l4D2, Bioshock2, etc) but there tends to be a lot of irritating individuals on the ModernWarfare games.
Too true. Modern Warefare 2 has the most annoying people you will ever meet

Agreed... and the 2/10 are probably playing something else like L4D/Borderlands.
Whereas games such as CoD just seem to be full of jerks, which is a real shame.

Mixed feelings aye. Halo, MW (either 1 or 2) and GTA4 online is pretty terrible. Had my share of abuse because I'm English >_>

But then it works both ways. Rainbow Six Vegas generally has a good, competant community of dedicated players IMO. Can always find good players who are willing to help you out in a T-Hunt game. Found a select few people who are just there for a good time and had some amazing games of ODST Firefight with them. Bad outweighs the good though, general consensus there.

I don't hate xbox live. I hate the people on xbox live. In life, people are pussies. When a chance arives for them to say anything without any conseequences, they go for it, even if they dont mean it. I like yahtzees explination. "I dont play a game with other people unless I am in smaking distance" or something along those lines.

Its really fun if you can deal with the dipshits.

The community can be very rude sometimes.
Rude is a very polite understatement. My last experience which was a few years ago was a bunch of people who felt they were gods gift to the earth because they can get a 5:1 KDR. With this inflated sense of self worth they also instantly bashed anyone who got in the way of them getting the most kills on capture the flag. I'm basically saying that the majority of people I ran into on Xbox live was a bastard that doesn't deserve to continue his family's curse by having children. This of course was my personal experience, maybe I just had terrible luck and the community is actually good.

Play MW2. Whenever you get a kill, someone will be screaming and complaining about how whatever you did was cheap or you are a dirty modder or how you are Jewish or that your grandmother gave them sexual favors or something.

Really, 8/10s of the people on Live are 8 or dicks, the others are either nice people or they don't use a mic.

I usually mute everyone except for people I know. This works, as I almost NEVER get rage-ful.

they are all like dude you ****** everyone knows that the vector is the gayest while they are using the ump and that is what we call situational irony
I do the exact same whenever I play cod. Just mute everybody
I do that on most games...then wonder why I'm wearing my mic after I have muted everyone in the room.

The biggest fallback of multiplayer is people. But hell, it gives a game its replayablility.

But what I hate are people with mics who sing. I like what I said to one idiot who was singing: "Listen (insert name here), I don't care if you're first chair in choir, won American Idol, then beat St. Gabriel in a singing contest, I don't want to hear you sing. Now shut up."

I was actually quite surprised at how the xbox live community is actually a lot more intelligent than I have heard of. I've only ran into a few assholes and I ended up laughing at most of them. It's the people who demand you stop having fun on L4D that piss me off more than anything.

I use this as an example to why I don't really care much for the Xbox Live community.
That video is gold. No offense (to southern Americans), but the southern Americans sound even more bigoted 'cause they kept referencing black guys. They also just sound so... backward.

It's a double edged sword in my opinion. Even though there's the fact that you WILL be called a gay Jewish black person at least once in your XBox experience, there's always chances that you might stumble onto something like this.

God I wanna beat the shit out of that kid. If I tried that with my mom I wouldn't be able to type write now.

Anyways, I don't have a 360, but as far as the whole "****** n00b" stuff goes, it's in just about every game that has multiplayer. Just mute and move on.

I just mute everyone, at all times, when I play on Xbox LIVE. (unless playing with friends or if its co-op in some case)

But I just don't want to bother with it. I just want to play with other people, dont want to hear them beyond what the game sounds like.

I have had my xbox for over three years and until now i have never had xbox live for various reasons... Being on the escapist forums in recent months have not exactly made me very willing to bother getting xbox live but i had a little extra cash so i got the cable and membership card necessary.

The first two hours i spent playing borderlands which is fun when people work TOGETHER but my experience wasn't that enjoyable when the only person with a mic sounds as young as my nephew and twice as annoying especially when he got in the gun turret and started blasting me while i was trying to get ammo..

After borderlands i was not very keen to try my hand at another match so i decided to try bioshock which was better experience at first because no body was speaking. Then i stopped to eat a little something and came back and another person had a mic active but he wasn't that bad to hear unless he sung...

Now i've seen a lot of posts that really put a lot of hate on xbox live and to be honest i didn't find it that bad.

So why all the hate on xbox live?

Edit- I don't get angered by people saying curse words, i usually laugh or just ignore/mute them.

Edit2- So it must be good not to have mw2 and halo
I love Xbox live, sure anything made to connect thousands of people will have some jerks/weirdos, but that's inevitable.

If you like the online experience, try Left 4 Dead 2, it's great, and is really only properly playable with Xbox live

Most of the problems people have with xbox live are failings of online play in general. Xbox live has just sort of become the poster child for all the annoying things about playing online.
