The only way to counter this is for your friend to make a shit load more videos, oh oh, make sure he makes a video titled "War on anonymous" or "I declare war on anonymous" also have a video simply titled "Encyclopedia Dramatica" that will help.

Seriously tell him to stop being such a pansy, stop making stupid videos that the trolls will milk for lulz, and they'll forget about it in no time.

Anonymous (4chan) is too many hackers in one place I find. They are like the Orks from Warhammer 40k: They are the most powerful force on the internet, if they stop fighting each other.

Oh boy here we go again. There is one nicely put statement about anonymous and 4chan, this is the truth. When it comes to destoying others, it's usually few hackers that do the real job, throw the info they mined at mindless hordes of trolls and watch with amusement what will happen.

As for the statement:

"WHAT IS ANONYMOUS? Some people have decided that anonymous is a hate-machine spewing anti-regligious, racist, sexist rage. Yes, anonymous is certainly that. Anonymous is also devoutly religious, racially tolerant, and promotes gender equality. Anonymous is both and neither at the same time. People fall into the trap that think Anoymous is a real group. That we have leaders, a structure, a goal, and a common belief. Anon is a collection of ALL beliefs.

Go to a white power website and tell them that racism is sign of the ignorant and the stupid, and your thread is likely to get deleted and the moderators will ban you. Go to an equal rights website and tell them that racial purity is the backbone of civilization, and your thread is likely to get deleted and the moderators will ban you. Go tell Anonymous either of things and Anon will love you, Anon will hate you, Anon will be undecided, and Anon won't care.

Anon was there protesting Scientology. Anon was there protesting the protest. Anon floods websites with porn. Anon warns those websites of the attacks and helps pick up the pieces. Anon launches attacks against racists, Anon launches attack FOR racists, Anon is against attacks of any kind. Anon is conservative, anon is liberal, Anon is neither, anon is non-political. Is Anonymous hypocritcal? Only if you consider all of earth as a hypocracy.

Are you getting the point yet?

Anonymous is humanity. The best and the worst of our species. If you're reading this, you're Anonymous. If you AREN't reading this, you're still anonymous. We are every ideal and taboo the human species has managed to invent so far."

It's stupid to hate them just as it's stupid to love them. It's more like a force of natu... well of the internet that you just live with and try to be smart while dealing with it. Oh, and nowadays people throw their personal info around so carelesly that maybe it's good that someone works as an example for what happens when you are not careful.

Anonymous is just a cover to protect themselves from such bullshit. Anybody saying they're part of it completely defeats the purpose anyway.

OT: Never gotten Anons on my bed side, but I would advise to abandon that youtube account and associated e-mail address.
Good thinking. You don't want to be on 4chan's bad side, but you REALLY do not want to be on their bedside.
i lul'd. hard

OT: yes you should fear them... unless you got an IP scrambler, and change passwords on email accounts (and bank accounts for that matter, if you are one of those that have EVERYTHING in their ONE email adress)

With the steps done above, you cannot be caught in their "immediate harm" range, therefore putting an immediate end to their "harm".

But, if you don't or won't care. Man... i pity the fool!

Am I missing something here? Who is this Anonymous?
It's a group of people from the various Chan websites who spend entirely too much time on the internet.

They do things like manipulate the Time Top 100 People of the Century polls to whatever they like, fuck with Scientology and general asshattery. They're not exactly something to fear, but when they do manage to bend their communal will away from yelling at each other, they can accomplish some rather astonishing things. There's really not a whole lot you can do if they target you, aside from completely cutting all ties with your life and starting new somewhere else with no paper trail anywhere. Otherwise, they will find you and continue to harass you until they tire of it. It's all very silly.

I'm going out for a meal tonight to celebrate my 16th Birthday, and I am taking two friends. One of them goes on the internet frequently, and after making one Youtube video insulting 4chan, he was attacked by anonymous.

Ever since he has been afraid. He always thinks that people are trying to get him, and when he saw a Scientology Protest in Birmingham once, he almost cried.

I need some advice for him. I started going on 4Chan shortly after this incident and found it was the worst place ever (Mainly /b/).My original plan was to show him that they just responded to criticism, but no such luck. My plan made things worse.

Calumon: The friend is not me or Jack. We need some advice for him...

Should we also fear Anonymous?

Anonymous is what is known as the most cruel group of individuals in existence. Mainly on things like the Chan websites, they describe themselves as the owners of the internet. Why? Because of all the destruction they have wrought on people.

To describe what they did, let me explain.

They first did the small things, Passive aggressive comments on the video and his channel. No biggy.

The hate mail came next. Again no biggy.

Then came the hackings, the photo's which never existed. Somehow, even though he has never put a picture of himself online, someone found one, and they released it with the words.

"We Know you."

Later came the phone calls, the calls at the door and once a package came with a guy fawkes mask inside that appeared to have been bled upon.

He still gets something every now and again a year on. A reminder of what he did.

Insulted the most dangerous people on the Web.

And by the way, he has abandoned both Youtube account and e-mail and somehow, they have still found him. The words "You cannot hide from Anonymous." Is often sent to him.
Wow....... that last bit was pretty scary...

My advice:

I hear a lot about this group lately, and I do wonder what they can actually do.
I mean, even supposing they can do everything possible with my internet accounts and my computer, I can not think of a way that could "ruin" my life.

They are trying to be terrorists, and therefor feed of fear.
Do not fear another human beeing, ever.
Fear is a self-perpetuating cancer, and the only one that will ruin your life is you, if you let it get a hold of you.
If the fear becomes a real obstacle, seek help.
If they get your hands on your personal information, they can:

1) Completely destroy your credit rating, leaving you unable to ever get a loan or credit card
2) Get you added to an FBI/CIA/other-initialed-agency watchlist as a suspected terrorist (assuming you live in the states)
3) Manipulate your official records in such a way that would likely get you fired from your job, and blacklisted from anything else in the field
etc, etc

They have very real power. However, if you're smart about your security, you have very little to fear from them. It doesn't take a whole lot to make your computer secure.

I think the reason they are doing it is because they think it is funny.

I have a different idea of what is going on though. I will bet that the scary shit is from people the OP's friend know and don't like him. The people sending the things like the Guy Fawkes mask probably saw some of the lower end stuff that Anon was doing and decided that they want to scre the shit out of someone vulnerable they don't like.

It probably is no big deal.

*Ahem* well,

There is a differance between Anonymous and the sites they frequent, and chances are if Anonymous had actually been ticked off they would have done something rather than just made some ongoing comments. It's not like anyone ordered a ton of unpaid for "gut buster" pizzas and had them sent to your friend's address, got his internet locked out, spammed him with black faxes, started publishing dox all over the place, registered him on offensive porn sites, and similar things... which are among the forms of actual harassment Anonymous, and hackers in general, tend to use. Take a look at some of the acts recorded on sites like Encyclopedia Dramatica where Anonymous *DID* single people out, and then look at your friend. From what your describing there doesn't seem to be much similarity from where I'm sitting.

My immediate guess is that your friend has simply made himself a Lolcow by acting nervous when someone said something. Thus by sending a stereotypical message here and there they pretty much ratchet up the nervousness for lulz.... since it inspires messages like this
one. Basically I think it's people claiming to be Anonymous, rather than Anonymous itself.

-

As far as Anonymous goes for real though, I can understand the concern since I wouldn't want to cross them. Irregardless of what people might theorize the members are like, the damage/harassment they can do is real, and there is very little that any individual can do, which is part of the point.

See, the point is that there are tons of members (we won't get into theories about how it all works). Even if you had the abillity to single out and find one of these guys, grabbed a greyhound to his area of residence, bought a sledgehammer from a local store, busted into his house, and worked him over, you would accomplish absolutly nothing against Anonymous as a whole. That's one guy, and nobody could get them all. That's why being an "internet tough guy" is irrelevent in that case because even if your serious and do have the abillity to do something, your simply that badly outnumbered. Even if your "good at the internet" you can't out hack them all, even if you have training, and investigation / violence-oriented skills IRL you can't find and deal with them all, heck even if you somehow did find them, you'd have to be rich to track them all down, and chances are if you had those kinds of resources you wouldn't have been doing whatever it was that got Anonymous' attention to begin with... and truthfully if big groups like say Scientologists and The Australian Goverment can't engage in any kind of meaningful retaliation, one dude isn't going to be able to, even if he's James Bond.

I'm no expert but that's how I understand things, and what I've seen. Tell your friend not to worry in this case, because really, I think he'd have seen a bit more if this group was actually actively persecuting him. I also think it takes a bit more than some comments on Youtube to capture their interest/imagination. Most of the victims I've seen record of had more behind them than simple comments on youtube, though that might have been part of it.

While it may be creepy, I don't think they'll do anything beyond "watching" him. If he's really desperate he could change his IP adress, format the comp in case they got spyware or something on it and since they seem to know his street adress he could move. This is a pretty expensive solution, but I don't think they could track him down after that :p

As far as hive minds go anon is by far the most organized.
Let it blow over, they lose very fast.
