Sounds to me like you just don't like Japanese games. 'Course I'm a total Japanophile so I'm sort of at the other end of the spectrum, but....

I sentence you to 40+ years of playing nothing but Final Fantasy VII while listening to J-pop (the kind where the "diva" tries to speak English).

MUHUHAHAHAHAH!
That might be it actually. I'm a huge anime fan but everything that's came out lately (with the exception of Index) has kind of bugged me. Makes me regret all those Japanese lessons we went to.

We did actually get a few hours into Tales of Vesperia (with me playing the shitty second character) before the kid with the stupid hair was introduced. Sadly every time he opened his mouth it made me want to vomit so I had to quit.

We did however make it through Eternal Sonata together. It was a little disappointing but we had fun.

Sadly she can't/won't play Halo because first person games make her sick apparently.
Geez, and from the way you started this topic, I was thinking you were about to dump her harder than a delicious cake full of cow dung.

But really, man, this is such a trivial little thing to get so damn pissed over. Maybe you just needed to vent for a tad or something. I'm not going to attempt deep advice or anything, just accept your differences and move on. If you can't, then don't bring your petty whining to us about how you have a girlfriend whose taste in games you can't stand. Its kinda sad, in my opinion.

The only thing I agree with you on is that the voice acting (dubs) in JRPG is horrible. Now, as you say she plays them in JAPANESE, and in my eyes that is a redeeming quality because original voice acting most of the time (most, not always) is way (WAY) better than dubbed. Dont get me wrong, I am not a rabid JRPG fan, some stories make me want to put a bullet through the developer's head, but I have to say that for the most part JRPG have better, more developed and involving story than any of the Western games.
Really? I've found with a few exceptions JRPG essentially tell the same story over and over again. Particularly the bigger names. The Persona and Shin Megami Tensei series are a rare exception but compared to something like say Planescape Torment or The Witcher? Even if the writing was anywhere near as good (it isn't) a lot of the dialogue's impact is lost in translation.

Edit: Let me spell this out. The rant was a joke. I find my girlfriend's taste in games more amusing than anything else. I'm not going to dump her because she has some kind of creepy big hair/sword addiction.

Edit: Now her stuffed cow obsession is another one. As I write this I am being watched by no less than twelve stuffed cows

Edit: She also has far too many semi pornographic fantasy books.

Bigger names like Final Fantasy and Tales have to die, the sooner the better. Or at least go though a major revamp (hire new writers and give them full creative freedom).

The Witcher was... Well I have to admit it was pretty good, especially if you read the book, you can see a lot of game events in the different light. Unfortunately games like Witcher are exception. Western market flooded with hundreds and hundreds of no-name curd board cut out characters following the "see enemy - kill enemy" plot with little to no back story or motivation. (There are exceptions, like Half-Life for example.)

The cow thing IS kind of creepy... Semi-Porn on the other hand is not, just means she is exploring her sexuality through fantasy (Your the one reaping the benefits, so dont complain).
I think the industry on both sides of the market is saturated with shit storywise. I do however think that when western games get it right they do it very right indeed (probably because I'm a filthy Gaijin). Really I'd like to see western RPG's brightened up and JRPG's toned down. There's too much sugary sweet shit coming out of Japan right now.

Seriously though, these books are terrifying. It's like Harlequin Romance meets Lord of the Rings. How many time can one person use the word 'throbbing'?

She collects stuffed and plushie cows. In fact scratch that. She collects cow everything. When I brush my teeth my toothbrush is held in a cow. The handsoap is dispensed by a cow. Our Cable box lies inside a specially made cow container. I get my salt from a cow. I get my pepper from a cow. She has three cow mugs. One cow hot water bottle. One cow pillow. One cow travel pillow. One cow kitchen roll dispenser. One cow soap dish. One set of cow pajamas. ETC ETC

(Shiver)(Looks at the stuffed black cat next to the comp, the only stuffed thing he kept since childhood) Damn, that reminds me of those crazy old people who colect junk because they are lonely...
Myeh. It's her quirks that make her what she is. I can hardly talk. The fairy on top of our tree this year was a badly made owl with terrifying staring eyes.

Videogames are relaxation. If it helps your girlfriend relax, then it does the job. Videogames aren't a science that you can evaluate critically in terms of best = most fun. For instance, turn-based RPGS (or "JRPGs") are boring to me, whether its "Chaos Wars" or "Final Fantasy CXIIIV"

Hell, just give her ANY Final Fantasy game (except FFIX of course) and say, "See this? This is a quality JRPG. What you have been playing is pure shit."
Sir, I will not tolerate comments like that about FFIX. But then again, each to his own.

When you mentioned your girlfriend's tastes in games, I just knew Ephemeral Fantasia is gonna fit in there somewhere.

Your problem is essentially one that has has various itinerants throughout woman/man relations. The real question here is how does one deal with the matter of taste in relationships?

As if modern relationships weren't hard enough with all of the stresses of modern life, arguments often arise as to a question of taste. For example, the music collection of both parties can create conflict "ugh, I can't believe you like X-Band, Y-Band is heaps better".

Usually, this is light-hearted banter but where it can get personal is when one party starts to suggest that they're better for holding their particular tastes.

For example, "I can't believe you like X-Band, what are you, stupid?".

The best way to solve this problem is by talking about these things in a civilized manner so it doesn't end up in arguments. You don't like the games she's playing, cool, that's your choice but by perhaps trying to introduce her to these games it could backfire in a huge way.

Nobody likes to be told what they should like, and what they do like is a pile of crapola. My advice to you is to tread very, very lightly.

At first I thought it was a genre thing you know? Like she really likes JRPG's and she's willing to play anything in the genre. But the thing is her response when asked how good a game is will always be the same no matter which fucking game she's playing. Oh so you're playing Ephemeral Fantasia are you? How is it? Oh it's good is it? Is it really! No it fucking isn't! You are a monster wrapped in human skin!
Oh my god! Someone else who had that game!

I thought it was just some horrible joke god had played on me alone. The people at GameStop even said "What the hell is this?" when I traded it in.

...Ask her this for me- did she ever get past the musical segment at the wedding scene? I could never get past the wedding scene because the fucking song Mouse had to play was too hard and long. This spared me from having to play the rest of the game.

Also I think it's awesome your girlfreind plays videogames.

PS: Does she have THIS!?

This has been bugging me for a while.

I own quite a few current gen games, about 80 at the last count, lots of these games are good. In fact I'd say with a few exceptions which I'll put down to personal taste they're all good. It's a nice mix of Triple A 9/10 Mainstream blockbusters and cult hits. Shadow of the Collosus is there, GTA4 is there, Valkyria Chronicles, Psychonauts, Ratchet and Clank etc etc.

*snip*
This is a joke-thread right?...right....right...

DD, you poor bastard, but look at it this way.

Your girlfriend. Plays Videogames.

A good 40% of the nerds on the planet (guess) would orgasm at simply the idea of that =/

Just sneak in your games when she isn't playing I should.

His "girlfriend's" real name isn't Erin --it just happens to be my middle name. Yes I am Decoy's GIRLFRIEND. And no I have never played the game Ephemeral Fantasia. I do happen to be playing Chaos Wars, plus I have played tons of other games too. At least I finish half the games I have played (good or bad) as most of my "boyfriend's" games just sit there and he skirts around from game to game (almost always shooters) not completing them, especially when they are too hard (No More Heroes anyone?).

I used to play Doom and Wolfenstein when I was younger however since a certain child was born I can't stand most shooters because they make me queasy, plus they can be just as generic as anything else. I've also played a ton of adventure/action games like DoTT and Legend of Zelda. I like adventure games and RPG's. I also like most puzzle games.

Really who cares what games I like. I like what I like, and you will like what you like. I play them for my own reasons and what anyone here says isn't going to change the fact I find RPG's relaxing. When I get stressed it is nice to be able to sit back in a fantasy setting to take the real hardships of life out of the equation (hence the certain semi-pornographic books har har).

An "escapism".

The fact of the matter is, I went and played Chaos Wars because someone has been fucking hogging the PS3 and Xbox360 on MY big 67" TV (which I bought with my own money) after he saw me playing Valkyria Chronicles. I haven't been able to get on since, unless he is at work, which is when I play the game. This leaves me with three options. Play on the PSP, DS or PS2. I happened to choose Chaos Wars on the PS2--in Japanese. So what?

Put on the headphones (since you are hogging the newer bigger TV you can do that) if you are so irritated by the voices.

Some of the games I have played really touched me. Like Lost Odyssey, it made me cry in certain points. Just because I say a game is good, it doesn't mean it's just good, it's just because I understand you won't ....fucking...get...it even if I explain it to you, or you'll make fun of it.

To the person who said play a good RPG like a final fantasy game. I have completed all of them except 8 and 11 (since that is a mmorpg). To the person who said golden sun...I completed them both. To the people who say play Valkyria Chronicles, I say read above. I am trying to!

To the people who say he should commit violence against me for playing the games I enjoy, does this mean when he plays games I think are retarded I get to beat him to death with a controller? Because it's oh so very tempting.

And about my cows. I could go on about how he collects dollar store toy knock offs. Or owls to put in random escapist photos. Or about how he was seen just a few nights ago cuddled up with my big cow petting it and wishing ...it...was...a...dog.

I think I'll end it with that.

PS...

I know he posts here frequently and I saw him making a post about me which irritated the shit out of me. We actually got into an argument about it and I am still pissed off. No one on here knows what kind of person I truly am. Thanks to those that kind of stuck up for me and what I like to play. I am who I am, I'm not about to change it for anything--or anyone.

And to the person who put in the cow cover for the Xbox. Cute. I want one, thanks for showing it to me.

So, when I was in Japan, this one chick bought a Japanese PS2, just so that she could play Kingdom Hearts: Final Cut, so that she could play Chain of Memories.
She thought it was absurd that I would suggest to her to just get a GBA.

She stared at me like I was a freak when I got excited by a life-size Solid Snake, and rolled her eyes when I got this [http://www.toysnjoys.com/gbadvance/famicom_05zelda_sm.jpg].

And then she has the audacity to call herself a hardcore gamer.
She's not. She's an otaku.
