I have watched the show, and I do get a little confused when people act like it's well animated. I don't get me wrong, I've seen worse...a lot worse, but it's not anything spectacular, it's not really pushing any envelopes or delivering something new.

As for the writing...It's ok. It has a certain charm to it that harkens back and brings memories of a lot of the older McCracken shows, which I think could be another factor into why people like it so much, nostalgia (easy people, I'm not saying this applies to everyone and is the only reason to like it, but it's a fairly plausible factor for a lot of people)

At this point the show honestly feels more like Paris Hilton or the Kardashians. They're more famous for being famous than they are for doing anything spectacular.
Yeah, but at least with this its more to do with the fact that people like it rather than, say, having nude photos taken of you by a man hanging upside-down from a helicopter.

My original simile was going to be more about how they sell TV shirts of old cartoons at places like Hot Topic, but I wasn't really sure where I was going to go with that.

Let me be clear that I don't think the show is BAD by any stretch of the word, but I do think the level of memetic status it's achieved is a bit overplayed at this stage.

It's like what Yahtzee recently said about Portal, the fans are the worst part about that game :p

To be fair, we probably are. I'm not one of those people who will forcibly convert someone, but I would show it to people to make them interested at the very least. If they wanted to see more, I'd point them in the right direction. If they don't, I'm at least glad that they HAVE a reason to not like it, rather than being a pompus little sh-keepcalmkeepcalm....keep....calm.

Sorry, I just really hate people who don't watch the show and give the most see-through of reasons why.

Again, I totally get that. Just recently I asked my friend if she wanted to watch The Shawshank Redemption (she'd never seen it before) and I told her up front that it was possible she wouldn't like it, it wasn't really her type of movie from what I'd seen. I was happy to be proven wrong because she LOVED it.

In the case of the new Ponies show, like I said, I've seen the show, I understand the appeal, I would never try to take it away from anymore, I just wasn't really getting all that into it.

But yeah, I hate when people hate stuff on surface levels. I think it's important to actually have some basis in experience when simply dismissing something. (I read the first Twilight book, that's how devoted I am to forming an actual opinion lol)

DAMN, now that's commitment! But I did the same, watched the first Twilight movie.

It's now common nature for me to hate it with much passion. Which doesn't help when one of characters first names is the same as that book. Ironicly enough, Twilight Sparkle is my favourite character!

Endnote : overated, but not the worst, you join the fanbase though and you'll use infuriatingly stupdi words like "anypony" and deserve my unending wrath.
We love and tolerate you.

Has any replying fan of the show actually given any thought to why this thread keeps popping up? To some of us, this show seems to have come out nowhere. I don't watch a lot of tv but usually it's hard to not hear about a new show coming out. However, just like the creator of this thread and similar others, the appearance of my little pony avatars, pics and memes was sudden to me and I had not heard of the show before all of this. After seeing so many references so suddenly my curiosity got the better of me and I did my own searching to find out what all the fuss was about.

In short, I'm pretty sure others like myself encountered all of the pics and memes before they even knew the show existed. Also, all of the fandom for it appeared overnight to me and grew rapidly.

Can't say that I'll become a fan of the show but it does have its uses. I have a friend who is a teacher and the silliness portrayed in the show reminds her of the silliness she has to deal with from her students so when I'm feeling devilish, I tease her with this show.

EDIT: And yes, the thread creator should have done their own homework on this, but my point is that I'm pretty sure that the poster, just like me and maybe other members of this site, only encounter my little pony references here. To be honest, if I didn't visit the escapist among the many other things I do on the internet, I may not have even heard of my little pony. The show would have run its seasons and I would not have been any wiser of its existence.

I'll just say it, why do they need to hand hold every single person through why "they" as a person like My little Pony? It's an opinion, and a lot of people like it, all I can say to a person who doesn't understand is to watch the series.
So let me help those who don't understand, obviously, this isn't aimed at you, but, at those incapable of doing their own research:

The vicious cycle continues! I hear a lot of people are watching because they actually enjoy and stuff - me? I watch for the strong political message hidden underneath the awesomely drawn and flesh out characters. Truly revolutionary in it's approach, the show goes to great lengths to promote ideals of friendship, tolerance and understanding - ideals that I believe is depressingly absent from modern-day politics.

...Real reason. When I and many others watch it, I feel a smile spreading across my face. An effect that many TV shows fail to have on me these days. It's okay, I can tolerate your mistake to post a thread that's been done hundreds of times before. Just use the search bar next time, friend.

Idk, been wondering that a bit, I thought people would be more mature... But then again, maybe that's the ironic point. Hell, it might even a good show. I just wouldn't watch it, maybe a ninja will pop out and steal my man card if I ever see it. Idk But whatever...

I've seen worse memes.

The first place I saw it start to become 'popular' was /b/

I wouldn't be surprised if this is just another thing that /b/tards started as a joke on their forum, and then some people just took it too far and spread it everywhere else as well...
It started on /co/ not /b/ dude. And people actually like the show.

This has been done to death.

People actually like it - it's well-written with a lot of stuff for people of all ages. All of the particularly over-the-top elements with ponies and rainbows and fluffy clouds and bunnies tend to be lampshaded pretty heavily too.

I'm pretty sure no one is going to take your man card over a cartoon. Try it out, you might find another show you like. That or another thing to hate, either one, I don't really care which.

But my shows must have guns, and murders, and tits! and beer LOADS of beer.

nah just kidding. Maybe one day, I was just joking. If i was serious about the man card thing, it would probably be gone already for almost crying over toy story 3.

If I was a freaking mod, I would just lock every single one of these threads as they popped up.

It's hurdled over the joke barrier and is now pissing of the fucking kind and queen of tedium.

Can everybody please just agree to STFU about this god awful meme and hope it dies or migrates to dedicated groups. Honestly, we're basically throwing petrol on the fire with these things.

I think it's way past being a meme. I'm pretty sure if it was just a meme there wouldn't be three or four image sites dedicated it and multiple communities surrounding it. Just saiyin.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meme

Learn the definition?

It is a meme. It's just a prolific meme.

Simple fandoms are seldom so vocal.

"is an idea, behavior or style that spreads from person to person within a culture"

Using your broad-ass definition just about everything is a meme. And if everything is a meme then it makes little sense to berate something for being a meme.

Apparently my friend is the only person who knows of this show and doesn't like it and generally thinks it's bad. Personally though my little pony is charming but hardly the best cartoon made even today. Nah i'd rather give gumball or the new loony toons that acclaim while this show just happens to be better than it's original production.
