Most mainstream, like pop, rap, and some of the more popular rock focuses on the bland and already-covered areas, but that's how it's always been. Most people are content with generic love songs and raps about how many hoes such-and-such a person has slapped today, and most artists are content to write said songs, so long as they get a paycheck.
Not all is lost, though. There's still a good many bands out there that actually try to establish meaning in their work, and even if they do have the occasional song that touches on a mainstream note, there's a big difference between AAR's Dirty Little Secret and A7X's Seize the Day
Well I saw the Rap bashing coming a mile away to be honest, I won't even get into attempting to convince you otherwise on it though.
Mainstream music will always be like this, because it is for either the mindless masses to consume, or for those that just enjoy the base sounds and nothing more, and yes there are people out there like this.
What you say is how I felt for a while, but my stance on that changed, and I believe that even in mainstream music there are people who still project meaning through their music, but mainstream music is business, and will stay that way when people decide a good living through mindless generic music is better than a below average one through deep and meaningful music.
