Ask people for a anime that has a horrible ending, not like depressing, just one so bad you'll be happy its over.

Might I suggest Neon Genesis Evangelion, and ignore the movie that made up for the last two episodes.
What aboot the End of Evangelion movie that was pretty epic.
That was the movie I was telling him to ignore.
You mean you didn't like the mass evas go against Asuka's eva? o_O because i thought the scene and musiv were beautiful but its okay.

I totally agree. It does make me sad. But it also doesn't drag stories and character along like a dead horse. Even filler shows are given their time to shine and allowed to end at their peak. Who wants to see an awesome show degrade into merely good then okay then maybe even bad. This is the way I feel about longer series like Naruto or Bleach. When they are fresh, the characters have room to develop and the plot has direction. But later it gets lost in filler or caught up in side ideas and loses it's true meaning.

So short form. Yes. Most anime are short and it makes me both sad and happy. (Plus if the anime sucks you usually don't waste to much time on it, even if you do force yourself to finish it ;P)

Well, I've seen Higurashi, I gave up on Texhnolyze (it's fucking awesome but i can't see it going anywhere and i'm ages through, also i know i'll just end up failing to comprehend the entire thing once it's over) so now I'm watching Ergo Proxy, almost finished, it has KICKED ASS so far. So many cliffhangers, very cool.

I suppose I kinda got attached to Rika during Higurashi, but not many of the other characters. Keiichi a bit, Shion a bit, but the rest, meh. It was awesome, though, the first arc scared the shit outta me and Massacre was some of the best entertainment I've seen in my life.

Oh, and if you watch Ergo Proxy, I reccomend the english dub. It's gooood.
Higurashi was one of the only animes that actually made me cringe slightly when seeing some of the characters get murdered brutally and a few scenes from school days.

I was very sad when Azumanga Daioh ended. I've never really felt that way before. All you can do is enjoy the ride and be thankful that you experienced it. I know I was.

Yes .. though not all shows. Spice and Wolf (Ookami to Koushinryo) is the single best manga/anime series of the last 15 years. Watch it. Do it now. DO IT GODDAMNIT!!! >.<

It has well written characters, *BRILLIANT* plots and truly heartfelt human drama.

Another *wonderful* anime/manga is Planetes ... realistic science fiction set in the not so distant future about space debris, trade, terrorism, social commentary (With remarkeably good allegories to the UN and US in particular), and generally nice and authentic human interraction.

With a good shot of comedy in both.

Hey all.

Recently I've really been getting into Anime. Currently the only Anime series I have watched all of are FLCL and Welcome to the N.H.K., and I'm halfway through Azumanga Daioh. The only movies I've seen are Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. So far I have enjoyed all of these immensely, they have been really great and I'm looking forward to watching more.

However, for me, it's hard to watch the end of Anime. Because for some reason, I always feel far more attached to characters from an Anime series/movie than I would to a real life show. So when a series has finished, I often feel really sad. Much more than I would if I had finished a TV series. An example is FLCL, while this series only had 6 episodes, once it finished I felt a great amount of sadness. Or Welcome To The N.H.K., which had 24 episodes. Once it finished I felt the same amount of sadness as I did when I finished watching all seasons of Scrubs, and Scrubs had a hell of a lot more episodes than 26.
Even now I'm half-way through Azumanga Daioh, which is primarily a comedy, and I'm still going to be sad once it's over.

So my question to the Escapists is, do you feel this way to? Are you often more attached to an Anime series than a real life show?

And by the way, I don't mean "attached" as in thinking that the characters are really hot. But I mean attached in the sense than I wish that there were more episodes and it didn't have to finish.
Oh man, and you are watching Azumanga Daioh? Man, I cried at the end because I realized my virtual friendship was about to end.

Well, okay, maybe not THAT much. But still, a very attachable group of characters indeed. Try watching terrible long form anime, it'll help you out! You'll get so sick of Naruto or Goku, you'll be SO GLAD to find a good stopping point and not watch anymore.

So watch longer anime? You'll probably like the long Shounen animes that often go way above 100 episodes.
The problem with most animes and mangas that go that long is that they drop in quality greatly(Ie Bleach, Naruto has stayed true, while not as good as when it started it is still good). Not to mention the large amounts of fillers in them that are even worse quality then what the mangas sometimes create.

OT: Yes, I always get sad when a good anime finishes however I am glad if they end it before getting desperate to make it longer. (IE Deathnote) Good animes are ones like Rounin Kenshin (spelled that wrong most likely.) Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagan, Hellsing OVA (Only eight AWESOME episodes so far.) Gundam Wing, and others. Rule of thumb for most anime is generally the sub will have higher quality voice actors. However most of those throw that logic out the window. (I love Alucard (Hellsing OVA) in the dub, as well as Kamina in TTGL)For a good tearjerker and damn good action anime check out Wolfs Reign. <3 Trigun isn't a bad action anime either. (Though I admit I have not seen it all yet.)

I'll simply put it like this: remember that all good things must come to an end. I'm playing ME2 right now (somewhat unrelated I know, but let me finish), and with this recent announcement of ME3 release in approximately a year, I'm eager to see how everything to finally end.

So try that. As you're watching whatever show, look forward to how the writers tie everything up so that the ending (hopefully) rounds up the show into a nice, convenient package. :)

I agree about the voice acting i'm the kind of guy that can put up with some ok voice acting wether its from evangelion to cowboy bebop to big O its fine with me unless its like some of the english voice acting from Blaz Blu its a little hard to like its english counterparts.

That's a bit of an unfair comparison, I think. Nu is essentially an android, so her voice being so flat is suppose to reflect how she has no emotion (except when Ragna is around). Okay, sure, her voice probably has about much difference in tone as the Midwest plains have hills, but the fact remains that she's supposed to sound like that.

Same. Most of all was probably the nail-tearing scene... vzz. Not nice. That's one of two media sequences where I actually looked away a bit... the other one was the eye-gouging scene in 28 Weeks Later.

I was really into Bleach and Naruto but eventually while watching One piece i could no longer watch the other two mainly because of the ammount of fillers and thus i decided to stay only with one piece because the theme of pirates vs the government seemed more illusive to me.

I dont feel sad exactly just a little unfulfilled. Kind of like making a good friend then not seeing them again. The entire dragonball series from the original to GT was sort of fulfilling because we see Goku growing up & the family & friends he's made.

My personal favourite is Ghost in the shell: Stand alone complex & I do feel like seeing more even after the ordeal is over, so in a sense I can understand where your coming from.

Check out Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. It follows the manga, and is about 50 episodes. It doesn't drag out at all, it ends very nicely.

Same thing with Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Bebop.

I would avoid Bleach, though, the plot is just....ugh, now.

I have the opposite problem.

I have never seen an Anime where I find the characters remotely likable or any that I can form an attachment to.

I fully agree with this sentiment, and BTW, i was depressed for a whole day after finishing Azumanga Daioh for the first time (last episode makes u wanna cry, but remains hilarious).

But i don't see this as a "problem", i think it shows how much better quality the good anime shows out there are than some of the good western shows and movies. Also, a show that attempts to form attachment between viewers and the characters, is more successful if done for a limited amount of episodes.
But this isn't true of all Anime, the infamous 80-episodes of filler in Naruto proves this. On the other hand, One Piece recently passed 600 chapters, and i know that even if it goes on for 400 more, i will be very sad to leave the characters once it ends (Quantity doesn't necessarily mean loss in quality, but it is definitely a challenge to keep the quality going).

It's not going to make me stop watching Anime. And I prefer shorter anime anyway, I tried watching Bleach and by the 70th Episode I was almost bored of it. Although that was my first anime ever so I could try going back...
I see. Well then yeah, that's natural I guess. I find that, by the end of most series, I don't want there to be any more though.

I advise you not to restart Bleach, though. Plot is just pulled out of the ass in it.
Never liked bleach. One piece though is epic. and humorous.
Yeah i too am in the middle of one piece and i can say its always keeping me wanting more and who's your fave character?.
Garp is one of my favorites, sanji and chopper are too. brook is too. they are all so likeable.
