Fiscal education strikes AGAIN!

And we wonder why the economy is in the toilet, eh?

Should have just bought him the XBLG card as opposed to letting him destroy her bank account.

To be fair to the mother, you would trust your 11 year old son not to knowingly fuck with the family's finances.

You can't tell me he didn't ever read the price, and he obviously knew he wasn't supposed to be doing it or he'd probably have asked at least once if he could spend the money.

Even so, just ignoring it when you know your cash flow is screwed isn't exactly genius...

Another life lesson dear, don't let your child roam free online with your credit card.

DUH Rule #5 I believe.

Please learn this lesson well, actually pay attention to your son, and move on.

The mother's an idiot for giving an 11 year old credit card details, the son's a moron for not realising how much he spent.

I was gonna bring up the story about the 12-year-old spending $1,400 on Farmville, but you seem to have me beat by one year and about $200.

Nope, that was my reaction as well. Who the hell gives their card details to their eleven year-old child?!

I am wondering why the woman never checked her bank records (or balanced her bank acct) since last July, or she would have noticed the large hole in her wallet that her son's Xbox was causing.

Sure the son was stupid, and the mother could have been educated more about how the 360 works, but the point above nullifies my sympathy for her. She could have stopped this forever ago.

On the upside, if the kid ramped up all this more heavily since xmas or something, I'm sure she can contact Microsoft and report what happened, then rip away all of her son's e-toys.

Here's how I'll roll:

1) Whip/smack them with belt/bamboo on their legs/hands (optional, some new age parents are getting too tame nowadays)

2) Sell their 360, from the article it's clear she cancel their subscription.

3) Make them pay back the debt, either by cutting their monthly allowance or wait until they older enough to get a job to repay the debt.

4) If I feel generous, I'll give them a Game Boy Advance.

Also for the mother:

1) Fix your damn laptop! you said it broke for 6 months, fix it already!

2) Teach him about money, kids nowadays spend money like pouring a whole bucket of money down the drain.

For the kid:

Listen kid, you got off easy, older generation will give you a five across the face, much much older generation will give you a sandwich, knuckle sandwich that is.

Now how to avoid this

this words:

"Now son/daughter, here's my CC in your gaming console(s), everytime you want to buy something, ask me first then I'll decide to allow it or not, if you rake a mountain of bills, you'll say bye bye to your 360/PS3/Wii and say hello to my old Game Boy Advance, Capiche?"

Interesting case

And yes a reason why pre paid cards are such a good idea. Microsoft makes it easy to connect your CC to the Xbox Live Account but damn if you want to remove it..no easy way but calling them.

As they say they make it easy to spend but not easy to not spend. Not to mention wasn't there a check or password or something that had to be used to pay for things?

I know someone that this happened to! My friend's little brother did the same thing! He charged $400-$500 onto xBox claiming he was receiving the money from his father, though he was using his mothers credit card. She was not pleased.

One word: Irresponsible

The mom was irresponsible for putting her bank card details and leaving them there and not asking if he was doing any more spending.

The kid was irresponsible for being frivolous and spending all his mom's money without thinking of the consequences and how it would affect her (didn't even ask permission).

I know many will blame the mom more but I personally blame the kid since I knew about money and banking and how it affects people by that age. But then again I suppose it could all be the mom's fault for failing to teach him about money.
And the child should have to pay his mom back. Either sell his stuff for find his ass some jobs such as delivering newspapers, mowing lawns, shoveling sidewalks, walking dogs, until the bill is paid in full. Plus ground him till he's 16
