I generally hate racing games but I do like 2 racing franchises.. I like Mario Kart of course but that's because it's not a pure racing game with it's weapons/items and because it's silly and fun. I also like the F-zero series which is closer to a "pure" racing game, because of the sheer speed, and because of the different things on courses such as the jumps and corkscrews.. things you wouldn't be able to do in normal automobiles. There's just a sense of tremendous speed in an F-zero game you don't get in a GT or Forzza game.
The other genre I typically hate is RTS games.. however I did enjoy Empire at War, which I got with the "Best of PC" star wars collection that I bought due to needing a new copy of Battlefront (lost CD key) and KotOR (scratched disks) and wanted to reinstall on a new pc.. and hey, I haven't played Jedi Outcast in years.. I could use a new copy of that too!
I was actually quite pleasantly surprised with both of the other games in the box set as well. I had not gotten Republic Commando because I assumed generic shooter, but when I tried it out.. that first level.. it was one of the most immersive gaming experiences I've ever had. Your squadmates had awesome personalities and the VA was great and.. man they need to make a sequel..
Empire at War was something I was hesitant to try at first.. as I said.. I strongly dislike RTS games. Build up.. micromanage technologies and building and recruiting.. moving units.. and then just kinda sitting there while they duke it out and you bring in reinforcements and special units and stuff.. kinda boring with so much waiting and the only thing you do is micromanage. However empire at war didn't seem so bad.. as #1 it's a Star Wars theme which I like Star Wars obviously given that I bought the box set of star wars games.. and #2, when you move your units into position and select your target and such and watch as they duke it out.. you can scale back into cinematic views and it... looks like a star wars battle scene, with Tie fighters swooping in and excessive amounts of laserfire all over the place to the John Williams score.. so the waiting part is a little less boring.
There was also less resource mongling that plagues other RTS's, you conquer a planet.. it generates resources automatically. This cut back on a little bit of the micromanagement "fuckery" (thanks Yahtzee!) that I hate about RTS games. Not to mention both battles in space and on land, and to assault a planet on ground and conquer it, you first have to control the space above it, so as a defender you have to defend both the surface and have ships in orbit. If the enemy is in control of the space but doesn't control the planet surface.. it won't generate resources for them, but you can't get your troops off the planet. Ground battles you can capture reinforcement points (like battlefront) and build points.. which all of this stuff is to call in more reinforcements from space (from the fleet you brought to the planet) and to construct turrets and bacta tanks and repair buildings for your vehicles.. you don't build new units or mine resources or any of that shit..
So micromanaging is reduced.. it has a little in common with battlefront which I absolutely loved.. the waiting around while your units fought each other is made much more interesting with being able to watch them via cinematic views (multiple angles you can switch and pan and such), heroes with special moves, and it's Star Wars..
I don't love it so to say.. but I enjoyed doing a few skirmishes here and there and completed the story campaign and done a little bit of galactic conquest mode which is more than I can say for any other RTS.. haven't bought the expansion however.
