Bleach and Naruto. Not so much for their content, but for the way the companies just milk and milk and milk your time away. I once counted an ep of Bleach that was just about 40% flashbacks. Adding all the unnecessary pauses in conversations and action, I would put most of the shows in the 25% - 40% range for pure wasted time. It's obvious they're just streeeeeeeeeeeeeeeetching things as far as they can, and it really trashes the quality of the work.

To be sure, a huge reason is the different pace of manga production vs anime - manga is monthly, anime is weekly, and the studios are in a position where they have to keep the attention of the audience so they can keep the toy sales going. So they can't ever not produce a show for the week.

However, reasons or not, the effect is that those series just suck to watch compared to a show that tells the story straight on through at its natural pace.

To be brutally honest, I think most of it in general is over-rated. It's just, the way I see it anyroad, what makes anime so special above any other, for example, Western cartoon? I don't really see the big deal anymore. Sure, I used to watch some back in the day and yes, some of it was quite funny but I don't think it's worth getting as worked up over as some people do.

Sure though, whatever floats other people's boats. :p Anyway, I hope you can see what I'm getting at at least, haha.

Fooly Cooly!

It's all nonsense I tell you! Nonsense! And judging from the explanations from people who like it, it still doesn't deserve all the praise it gets.

I hate it! HATEHATEHATEHATEHATEHATEHATEHATE IT!

Phew....ok fans, come at me.
I also agree with that and most of adult swims lineup for the past 10 years.
6 episodes of eva ripoff that arent even funny.

Cowboy bebop is also very overrated, its usually number 1 on any list and yet I find 5 eps of it interesting.

Same here, except all "yawn", no "hate". I can't understand why the creators of Avatar: The Last Airbender think it's so great, they made all their staff watch the entire show. I hope it was just for the artistic and animation techniques.

I'm not a big fan of Naruto. Or Dragonball Z really. Or even Dragonball. Heck, any in that universe. And I used to like Bleach, but it's wearing on me now.

Let's start off with Dragonball and the others in that universe. Maybe it's because I didn't watch it as a young child, but I just don't see much in it. I mean, it's good for a laugh here and there, but I've met people who practically swear it is the best thing ever put on TV. And I just wonder how? The fights go on forever, the plot is predictable as all get out, the characters are just sort of meh...and I think what really gets me is the whole "I've reached the end of my power. I can't get anymore powerful *insert new, stronger villian here* Oh, just kidding, I found even more power" formula it lives on. And I just generally hate Goku. Such an idiot. Yes, I know, that's the point, but he just grates on my nerves after three episodes, which is about all I can watch in a month.

This is why Bleach is losing me. It has the "Dragonball Z" effect. You know, the long, long fights, the constantly reaching their end but finding new power when a stronger enemy comes along. The characters are good enough really, and I did like it in the beginning, but after they rescued Rukia just to have freakin' Orihime get stolen, forcing them to go back and rescue another female all over again, I just got bored and kept thinking "Haven't I seen this before?"

And Naruto. I just...I don't know why it's so popular. I hate Naruto himself, Sakura's a cookie-cutter female, and Sasuke's the emo whiny prick. I liked Kakashi though. He was pretty cool. But I can't even read the manga anymore, you know, to avoid fillers. I just don't like it. I never loved it, but I tolerated it (it was in Shonen Jump), but there just came a point when I decided it wasn't worth my time.

Edit: Oh yeah! I was just reminded of Fooly Cooly. Freakin' hate that show too. I've seen the whole thing and just hated every minute of it, but thought that I should see it to the end because it was short and I might've possibly been stuck in a house with a friend who forced me to watch it. I tried, I really did but...gheez I hate it.

I'm going to brave the wall of fire here and say I liked that anime.

Then again, I've always held the concept that repeated trends (in this case apparently school kids with super powers) can have good in that they are to people who haven't experienced them what the original greats were to those who loath the trend followers. So, as I've watched a small handful of anime, this is unique to me, and I love it.

One Piece, Cowboy Bebop, D.Gray man, 07-ghost(that one's truly terrible), and.. yeah, that's about it. Oh, and it's funny how most of the people saying that Death Note is overrated, are mostly pissed-off because (spoiler alert) L dies and gets replaced by a kid and a teenager (to be honest, that kind of pissed me off too, but that still wasn't enough for me to diminish the tremendous atmosphere it had build-up to that point, and not to mention its well-developed, relatable characters). And to the 'gentlemen' claiming that it's an anime for 12 year olds... Why? And how, more precisely? Yeah, you could enjoy it if you were 12... You know, if you could understand all the SYMBOLYSM and all the METAPHORES...

Oh sorry I forgot to mention: DOT FUCKING HACK! That was just so... corny and moral and cheesy and... and just ahhh boring!

The naruto anime does, not so much the manga, but yeah bleach is a horrible milking by a creator whos last manga bombed so hes milking the shit out of it. It quickly went from supernatural monsters to spamming shonen fights.

Naruto, Bleach, Dragon Ball, the list goes on. The only reason I still read Naruto and Bleach is because of the time I've put into them

I gotta Say Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood. I LOVED the original but I found Brotherhood (Which followed the manga) more convoluted and just plain dopey. And then the fandom ordered my death for heresy.
Now, now, let's not be hasty. You need to be put on trial first.

I would like to submit Death Note. Especially the second half, but before that it was still as pretentious as hell and it had a tendency of brutally killing any characters you might give a damn about. Plus, if it didn't exist there would be that many less psychopathic idiots on the internet who preach straight out of Light's handbook and go about, in their own incompetent way, establishing some sort of "kill any and all criminals" agenda, which really boils down to "anyone I don't like". Or at least, it should, since that's what THEIR SO CALLED HERO DID.

Damn, I hate that show.

Naruto, One Piece and Death Note. None of them are any good in any sense.

Bleach could be considered as well.
This guy must really fucking hate Japanese 12 year old boys.
Or I could just have standards.
No, see, Japanese 12 year old boys are the target demographic of those shows.

See, the point I'm trying to say is that you are not part of said demographic, and may very well harbor ill feelings towards said demographic.
That's a rather odd assumption.

I'm hesitant to say Bleach because certain fans and maybe even the creator himself seem to be self aware to as to how bad it actually is.

i did not specificly say i disliked it, nor did i say that i liked it. i really have not decide for my self yet whether i like it or not, so i can't effectively say, whether it's rated at the right level or overrated...

ps 1st opening and endng FTW

EDIT: contradiction is FUN

Well, going by probability alone, a 12 year old Japanese boy wouldn't even be on the Escapist, considering it's an English language website.

And I think the minimum age to register on the Escapist is like 13 or 17.

I don't think you quite understand what a filler is.
Filler is when an anime gets too far ahead of the manga. The anime producers decide that, in order to keep interest up, they'll create a whole new storyline seperate from the manga. Fillers USUALLY don't advance the overall plot at all, and are often subpar. This is not always the case as there are exceptions, but they are widely disliked for this reason. When the manga is far enough ahead, the anime concludes its filler session and then continues on with the original, intended storyline.

The point was that Naruto is riddled with filler, so if I liked Naruto but hated filler, I would be able to read the manga and not have to deal with that sort of trash. However, I can't even like the storyline without pointless BS.

No sir, I didn't like Death Note not because of the plot twist, that part was actually interesting to me.

No, what I HATED about Death Note, was that you knew where it was going from episode 1, and it was 37 episodes long. They dragged it out with a brutally boring, uneventful pace. If the show was 16 episodes, I would've loved it. But no, it was too freakin' long, and I got the point of the show right off the bat. The ending? It was great. The plot twists? Blew my mind. The premise? Pretty cool. The pacing? Horrendous and dragged out.

Lucky Star.
Because it pales in comparison to Azumanga Daioh and yet it feels like Lucky Star has far more memes about it scattered across Youtube.

I'm not going to say Akira is overrated, albeit I didn't like the movie at all. For me Akira had way too much stuff crammed into it. And all of it was done in a really graphic animation that was completely distasteful for me, which was probably the biggest factor. And that I can't really factor into my level of "overrated" estimation. Some people like it, some people hate it. To me Akira is like Koyaanisqatsi, it's like an experience more than like a message given.
