Usually PeNiS or DEADMAN for single player games (both have old roots) or just Gollon for multi-player games.

For multiplayer shooters and such, always The Rogue Wolf or some permutation thereof.

For singleplayer, that's where I get imaginative. I'll usually either take a word and alter it for better effect, string together a few letters and work from there, or just mutilate the name of a random animal. However, for the travesty that was Secret of Evermore, a more... sarcastic line of thought was called for.

"Hi, my name is unimportant, and this is my dog, a waste of fur."

The name of the Character. EX: Legend of Zelda is always Link, Mario games is always Mario. If it doesn't matter, and it's just a profile name to distinguish is from other profiles, then MstrSwrd (Master Sword).

I actually name my characters famous actor names. I think it's pretty funny to see a powerful wizard named Vin Diesel or Steven Seagal haha.

I almost always name my characters "Blayze" (Games where you create one character), or use the default names (RPGs with default character names). In games such as Infinity Engine games, I name my characters in ways that allow me to remember what class they are.

In other words, I run around with a party consisting of names like "Angryface", "Trapman", "Healvendor", "Glasscannon" and "EXPLeech".

Sometimes i use a name i thought up when i was a kid, for nostalgia value (full of alternated caps and such. won't say it due to shame xP)

I've been using some characters from the gemmell books as well
-Decado
-Tenaka Khan
-Dakeyras
-Waylander
-Nogusta

Except when i'm given default names (link and ash, for example)

I've tried to use those rpg name generators, but they just throw up crappy names

I love being creative when naming. Calling Link "Fagballs" is funny, but not as funny as the closing message of the Phourglass review when Yahtzee said "Sometimes I like to name Link "I say" because it makes all the other characters talk like Foghorn Leghorn." That struck a very resonant note, since I've been pulling stunts like that for a while.

For instance, one time while playing FFVII I decided to name Cloud "like totally" because I thought it would be funny to see Sephiroth talk like a valley girl, but I was disappointed when I played through the game and realized that Sephiroth never actually says his name, so on my next play-though I decided to mix things up by assigning each character a different one's name. Cloud was renamed Aerith, Aerith was renamed Barrett, Tifa was renamed Cid, Red XIII was named Tifa, Cid was renamed Cloud, and Barrett was named Red XIII. That made for some very amusing dialogue (come to think of it, I probably shouldn't be giving the slash-fanfic writers any more ideas, but whatever).

Then, the other day, I was rummaging through my bookshelves looking for space, and I stumbled across my old copy of Lizard Music, by Daniel Pinkwater. One of the funniest books I've ever read, and to my surprise it still is funny even though I haven't read it since I was 10. That gave me the idea to do a play-through of FFVI or IX in which all the characters were named Reynold.

I usually choose something Latin for MMORPG's. On WoW, I am a Nelf Hunter named Ago, with a Springpaw named Iterum. Ago Iterum (If you know a lot about Roman History) is what Caesar said when crossing the Rubicon, thereby declaring civil war against Pompeys legions in Rome, and means 'The die is cast'.

But if I don't really care and want something stupid, I think of something random. On Final Fantasy 3, my 4 characters names were;

Nipples,
Squirtle,
Rapist,
And Frank. (Frank was the female)

And I also named my Turtwig 'Rapist' on a Pokemon emulator, just so that I could screenshot the point where it said 'Your enemy is weak! Get'em, Rapist!'

I'm told it's fun to call your characters "I say" as then all conversation is like talking to Foghorn Leghorn.

Names are purely whimsical.

Having pretended to study Sanskrit for two years, you pick up an ear for good sounds.

Troll priest?

Kouthek.

Bastard-Lunatic Demicanadian?

Goonswald Fisprawler XIV

Slinky rogue with skull buckle and fuzzy-wuzzy cape?

Stelstus.

That said, there's nothing like breaking down meaning, such as charging against the Melsedetsu Emperium with your gallant and dashing knight, General Electric.

Or perhaps stalking Zhevra on the barrens is more your cup of tea, O Orcish Crompton? With your faithful scorpid, Lighting. (Crompton Lighting make the deliciously searing halogen bulbs that give my room precious, precious light.)

Or perhaps you're a more scholarly type, shutting down those pesky Wizards. Perhaps you're an Earl Grey? There's a reason that dead fox is slung about your neck...

For usernames, I've been using 'GoddamnitReddas' for the past while, so I'm probably going to stick with that.
For character names, if it's a girl, I'd choose 'Key', which is my online nickname. If it's a guy, I'd pick a guy name from my list of names I like that I think fits the character next.
If it counts, I always name my band/tag the score board on Guitar Hero with 'Carpe Cranium!'

I have been Arcadia for over ten years, and I will continue to be Arcadia until the day the games die. (It's obviously not from Skies of Arcadia, it's from Arcadia: The Wyld Hunt.) Other names are all made up after either serious deliberation or whimsical fancy. I had a necro in Guild Wars once that I called "Fuzzyheaded Death." She had such fun fluffy hair... I'm not usually that strange about it though.

Our all-time favorite however is naming Link "Jesus." Try it sometime.

I used to name my character my name, or whatever came to mind at the time, but recently i've taken to naming everything Bun Tun, which is the name of a mythical homeless ass rapist who talks to trees where i live. Variations for females and boredom have included Bunny Tun, Bun Tunnete, Mr. Bun Tun and Tun Bun.
