Well, after I got a bit confused with the controls with Link's Awakening, I've always named Link EEEEEEE. Before then, just Link.

Usually Nicky T but if it's a chick it depends on what she looks like and then I give her a suitable name. No nothing stupid

Sometimes I use names from Shakespeare (which nobody recognizes, but who cares about that), other times I use characters from stories I've written.

it depends on what type of char i'm playing, i always like to have a bit of humour in my chars names sometimes

i at least try to be clever in the name tho and not something topical or that has no place in the game

in quake i've used

nipplessbatgirlsuit (friend was nipplesonthebatsuit)
beef curtains
theassholefromfasionablemale (i ran into some dude calling himself shannon hamilton once, it was funny)

in WoW i've tried to have a good sense of humour with the names

my blood elf pally's are all japanese names that are a form of "a good child" or "child of light"
my dranei shaman is divotchka, which means young girl in russian and she's got pigtails
human lock is niqueto (good sci-fi reference there)

In games where the character has a name stated somewhere I usually use that one i.e Link and all characters in FF games. Otherwise I usually use Raine, Lone or other names based on my own OCs.

In multiplayer I usually call myself MaxRaine (with or without space depending on if it's allowed, I never use underlines), due to Lone already being taken (like on this site). In MMOs I usually try to come up with a name that suits the character though, working real names or something supposed to be a nickname, but I've been known to be a Japanese freak too, that use a lot of Japanese sounding names =P *Is Anime geek* I never "borrow" names from existing anime characters or the like though.

so on my next play-though I decided to mix things up by assigning each character a different one's name. Cloud was renamed Aerith, Aerith was renamed Barrett, Tifa was renamed Cid, Red XIII was named Tifa, Cid was renamed Cloud, and Barrett was named Red XIII. That made for some very amusing dialogue
Nice. It'd also be funny to rename them all as "Marklar" like that one episode of South Park.

I usually never have the same name from game to game. I just make something up that sounds cool for fantasy or Star Wars, and for scifi it's usually my real name (like in Mass Effect I was Benjamin Shepherd). The one exception is if I have a choice to make my character an orc or half-orc like in a D&D game or something, in which case I name him Krobesh.

In single player games that force me to provide a name for the main character with no default, I just borrow Snow Crash [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snow_Crash]'s main character's name: Hiro Protagonist.

On mutliplayer games I usually try and grab the same handle I'm using here.

I also wrote a name generator [http://www.xenoveritas.org/namegen] which can come in handy if something demands a name.

For single player games I keep the defaults.

For online games I usually go for flamedance58, I've used this username since I was 13 so it's stuck pretty well, and if it's a game where the name is worth something like a fantasy game or the sorts it'll be Briareos or Caranthir.

On a side note, only 4 people have ever figured out where the name "Briareos" is from.

Normally it's John Galt for males and Dagny Taggart or Ayn Rand for females. I prefer to have NPCs know my philosophical views during ahead of time.
Why not Hank Rearden or D'Anconia? Rearden's pretty cool. Why you all hating on Rearden?

Stompy. Or whatever variant is available, but I prefer Stompy21 or Stompy101.

I myself would go with D'Anconia, simply because, in my opinion, he's better than the others. Com'on, his last name is awesome.

Unfortunately, most people online wouldn't actually get it, so it really doesn't matter.
