As always, I will recommend Clannad and Clannad After Story. Not only is it simply a beautiful anime, it is by far the most touching anime out there. You will cru, and you will cry lots.
You and me, man. You and me...

Yup, go watch it. You're missing out, OP.

Other good ones include:
Welcome to the NHK.
Angel beats.
School days.
Lucky star.
lucky star? I don't know if he can get into it it will take patience to overcome the first five episodes

O.T. My highly recommended ones are black lagoon (already mentioned but I suggest watching it dubbed cause I think it's better than subbed) and baccano! (might have been mentioned and again dubbed because I think it fits the feel more than the sub (it takes place in america))

for clannad watch the jp eng sub version the dub is horid
Oh yes, sorry, I forgot there was an English dub recently. It's not the worst, but it's pretty bad. But then, considering the OP has seen Naruto, I'm sure he's familiar with the vital need to watch subbed. I love Naruto, but the English dub makes my ears bleed.
short list of animes to watch in english
black lagoon
Hellsing (anime)
hellsing (ova's)
I'd also say that Coyboy Bebop and Fooly Cooly have great English dubs. Not to say you shouldn't watch them in Japanese (in fact you probably still should), but the English dubs are more than passable for those two.
I can't think of anyothers, the sad thing is that these can be counted on one hand
one word: baccano there now it takes two hands

Cat Shit One

Trust me, it's a hoot.
Apocalypse Meow? Where the Japanese are monkeys, British and Aussies are hamsters, Americans are bunnies and Viet Cong/Charlie are cats? I did like that too yeah and I'd recommend it too!
You forgot "where the Arabs are camels".

Seeing an elite group of bunnies rescue hostages from a band of militant camels is one of those things that you don't see every day.

I'd go with Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni, there's two seasons after that one so it'd last you a while.

K-ON! is a happy/in the life of.. type anime, there's two seasons of it and I think it's pretty good so far.

Also, School Days, it's a personnel favorite pf mine and I recommend it.

D.Gray-Man is good.
Tenga Toppa Gurren Lagann is great.
I don't see Trigun on your list so I have to suggest that.
Have you seen the new Evangelion movies? The fan-named, Rebuild of Evangelion.
I'll think of more later.

EDIT: like Soul Eater, as mentioned above.

You've seen all that but no Death Note? for shame.

Death Note, RuroKen, High School of the Dead (maybe, like a couple episodes), and Toradora are all pretty good and worth watching.

The only anime I've seen to date is Yugioh, Pokemon (both as a kid), Elfen Lied, and Hellsing. However, I'm currently about halfway through Death Note (just got to the point where Misa loses her memories of her Death Note), and I'd highly recommend it to the OP. And to anyone else who hasn't seen it, for that matter...

edit: full metal alchemist-brotherhood (it's the ova, but its ALOT better than the anime, the movie was fun too.)

Try out the Macross Series, Macross Plus is a nice place to start since it has great production value, and if you happen to have Netflix some of it is available thru them.

Also you should try out the original Universal Century Gundam series, mainly 0079 and Zeta, both of which are good if you can handle old style animation.

But here is a list of a few others to try.

Patlabor
Shin Getter Robo
Gantz (The manga is good, the anime is meh, but the series is very disturbing more so then Elfen Lied. Yet its addicting, sort of how Lost was. You want answers and it becomes addicting.)
Summer Wars
The Girl Who Jumped Through Time
Gurren Lagann
Soul Eater (Its good aside from the irritating fan service at times)
Skull Man
Gunslinger Girl

A lot of Mecha in there but i like ridiculous action and robots. I like deep story telling as well but ridiculous anime series make for a good thing to unwind with after a long day.

In my defence I have seen the Death Note live action films.

I suppose that will do. But the series itself is probably one of the best out there. Or, at least it was for the time it was in production. I'm not sure if anything else has surpassed it in terms of story quality or not.

Avatar: The Last Airbender is not anime. It's fully American. The animation is partially inspired by anime, the mythology by Hinduism, the culture by China, but it is fully and completely an American show. It's also the best freaking show I have ever seen in my life. Just had to point that out. "Anime" is Japanese animation. If it's not Japanese, it's not anime.

OT: See Clannad. It's an amazing romance/comedy/drama show that will not only make you laugh, but will make you cry. I don't care if you've never cried in a movie, the last fourth of this show (basically the last half of the second and final season) will have you in constant tears. This has been true for everyone I've shown it to. Everyone.
I think 'anime' is a style, not a nationality. You can get Anime from Korea, ne?
