New and Preowned games

Over the years I've played games, and have more on the shelves to install on my PC or play on the consoles that I have, but rarely have I picked up and bought a preowned game, and I've never sold one of my games either.

I don't know what it is, but even a game that I didn't think much of or enjoy enough to pick up and play again I haven't sold to CEX or GameStation or wherever still accepts second hand games. I guess that if I ever wanted to pick the game up or was feeling bored and wanted to mess around I'd pick it up again, like perhaps go play some Halo or Command and Conquer: Tiberium Sun even though I'll never complete them again, perhaps just play them again.

I also don't pick up preowned games unless I can help it. While I'm still looking for a copy of Project Zero 3 on PS2, very rarely will I even consider buying a second hand game because I like having a fresh manual, a brand new box, a disk that *will not* have scratches on it, or one that I can return and get a new copy of if it does have scratches on, and perhaps my favourite part of a new game, other than getting to kill some dudes by jumping on them or blowing up buildings with C4, is the new game smell. The smell of the manual, box and disk are a joy, and without them buying a new game just wouldn't be the same.

I can understand the benefits of buying second hand. It's cheaper, for one thing, and if you hate a certain publisher then you can deny them their $35 (about the most I'll pay for a PC game), but there's the lack of the new game smell...

Some games you also cannot buy second hand, such as Left 4 Dead or Dawn of War II as they use Steam, or games like Battlefield: Bad Company 2 or Battlefield 2142 which both use accounts linked to the CDKey, and games which come with a CDKey are something I'd rather not buy second hand, as you're as likely to get a relatively new (IE, only used to view the CDKey) manual as well as a torn or otherwise ruined manual, or a CDKey that's been damaged and is unreadable.

And yet whenever I talk about playing old games, none of my classmates understand why I hold on to games like the Baldur's Gate Saga, Dawn of War, Freelancer and Rainbow Six Vegas 2 while they're all moving from game to game, trading in Call of Duty 4 for Modern Warfare 2, Halo 3 from Halo 3: ODST and Gears of War for Gears of War 2, never keeping a game longer than they need to complete it and get all the achievements, or as many as they can be bothered, before going for the next "big" game.

So, Escapists, why is it whenever I brush on this topic with anyone but my friends, they always reply with "Oh yeah, I remember that game. It was great. I traded it in". I understand monetary problems is... well, a problem, but do gamers really consider games as a stepping stone to the next lump of achievements?

Not so much a stepping stone to achievements, mostly just a need to aid in purchasing newer games. I never trade games that I love though, or ones I still might play.

Your post count is 123. Hilarity.

Anyways, I used to sell my games all the time to get the latest and greatest, but I don't do that now anymore now that I realize that the games I'm playing now I'll be able to pass on to my children, along with my book collection.

Also, sequels.

I've found that trading in older games is a great way to get brand new games at really good prices. Simillarly, it's also a good way to get rid of older games that I'll never play again and get something to show for it.

Likewise, buying used games is also a good deal. I've bought "new" PS3 games for less than 10 bucks, and I never had any problem with any of them. In fact, I've actually traded in old games for new ones and still came out with change.

That said, there are games I won't get rid of.

Edit: Also, PC games never were any problem with my local Gamestop. They'll buy them, same as any other system.

I keep games i like, i trade those i dont. It's a rather simple business that allows such feats as getting Arkham Asylum for £3

You sir, are a genious. I have learned that lesson the hard way. I used to trade in games the instant I needed a break from them, and then I would regret it a month later. I haven't traded in a game in probably about a year, and haven't look back.

You are very lucky that you didn't need to trade in half your collection and rebuy it to learn your lesson.
That, and having to rebuy games like Freelancer and Baldur's Gate is a pain in the ass. Ebay is not your friend in this case.

I've never traded in a game, but then again I've never bought a game I didn't like. I scope my games out for months before I put cash into them

I do however, rent a lot.

I buy second hand pretty frequently, but I've never traded in a game. Reason being you get jack shit for them in any game store near me, and I like replaying games now and again anyway.

I have sold games, not as much as some but do it when it's a game i just realize I have gone a long time without playing or never really felt like it was my cup of tea because no matter how much I read about how good a game is, sometimes I make a bad choice, I'm human.

But on the terms of buying used games I'm usually all for it, I like playing a lot of older games and the best way to get them is at gamestop or ebay for nothing at all used such as finding Kingdom hearts one and two in gamestop for $13 together whereas buying them new from ebay or a old game seller Id be paying at least $45 for each.

With the scratches thing I understand your dilemma but at least at the gamestops I go to you have 10 days to trade back in used games for full purchase amount if they don't work due to scratches so I really don't have to worry about it.

Just wanted to go against the crowd here and put in my two cents, cheers.

I only trade in games I think are bad, or when I feel a bit stupid having them around. For example I had both Halo 3 (with no DLC) and ODST, but seeing as I had already played the (short) single player of Halo 3 and was only playing the multiplayer, there was no reason to hold on to it as all multiplayer DLCs were included with ODST already. Therefore, trade in Halo 3.

ah, that new game smell is a great thing!
I've got a small pile of unopened games so I can smell that lovely smell. Defcon, Clive Barker's Jericho and Battleforge will soon have the celophene wrapping ripped off and the new game smell will be smelt.

I missed renting out games. Huh.

Maybe it's because I'm a PC gamer, but I just don't rent out games. I might borrow one or two from my friends to try out, but I've never rented one, usually because if it's mine, I can do what the hell I like with it. Like leave it on a shelf for several months while I play back through Baldur's Gate for the 11th time that year...

*Must remember to actually stop playing Baldur's Gate once a month and actually play something else*

i keep alot of classic and good ones(such as super smash melee or double dash for the gamecube) but games that i have beaten to a pulp, or are only worth one playthrough (such as ac2) i trade that shit in and i more then likely walk out with extra cash or a used game, with usually additional cash on the side, i tend to play the market of used games, trade em in when people want them and buy used games that they have an abundace or old account of

most people never scratch there games around me, especially the hardcore kids who beat it in a week then sell it, then i go in and buy that new game for 45 instead of 60 dollars and walk out a happy man

so to me, used games are my best friend, and most of the time keeping it in store credit makes it incredibly worth it to trade in, i do buy new games that are essential, such as dragons age and mass effect 2, otherwise its always used games for me, ill check two-three times for used to purchase instead of buying new

i do love the new game smell, fresh and whatnot, which i shall be doing with ffxiii in a couple days, but 90% of the time its more worthy to know im saving 15 bucks are so compared to most people and gettin the game as good as new basically, and then i play the piss out of them, trade em in later and get more games, the cycle continues, and i continue to be happy

like i said tho, i keep classic games, there are very very few i regret trading in, there is hardly ever a prequel is better then a sequel imo, so i usually keep the sequel as do most people i know

i do know a few pack rat game hounds like you tho (no offense), and its kind of funny to watch them as they can't buy new games and they stress out about what they are getting because they dont have as much money due to only buying things new and never trading in, while im enjoying 4-5 games at a time, they can only do one, and do that one game for a month or two

I dont know whats my problem, but i never trade in games. I hate doing that. I like mulling over my collection, alphabetized and all. Games are just about the only hobby i've got where i care about collecting. I dont need to buy games new, and often buy games im unsure wether or not i'll enjoy second hand... i keep them though just to watch my collection grow.

The only time i've been willing to get rid of games is when I give stuff away to some of my friends. Gave a buddy my xbox and 20 games and i did it for 0 dollars. Thats the only time i feel ok with losing my precious.

I've never traded in a game, although thats probably because, when I was younger, I would just rent games out instead of buying them, and would only recieve my own copy of a game for my Birthday/Christmas.

But even now I don't feel it necessary to trade-in my old games. As it was mentioned prior, when boredom strikes, old games get played.

I also try and buy a game new unless its next to impossible to do so. The only preowned game I own is Left 4 Dead, and thats because I acquired it 6 months after it was first released and finding a new copy would've been next to impossible.

Trade in your games? That would be like trading in your porn man.

Ask yourself, would you buy second-hand porn?

I do it for the collection on my shelves, it can only grow, not change
