What's this anime like anyways? I've watched a few eps and felt like cutting myself afterwards. Reviews from people who watched the whole thing are no different. Although they did still give it good scores.
It created some very mixed feelings for me. The first half of the anime was actually pretty good. But then, in the second-half, it just kept getting more and more depressing, and the characters became more and more horrible and unlikable with no real relief. Also they ran out of money and made extensive use of still slides and non-animated segments to try and cover for it. In the grand scheme of things, it was an anime with a lot of promise and some neat ideas, that just kind of ran out of gas halfway through.
The movie that expands upon the ending of the series, "End of Evangelion" is also fairly depressing. Everyone dies, the world ends, it's all fairly pretentious and dipped in unnecessary christian symbolism for the sake of sounding cool and just left me with a "Why did I just waste my time watching this" kind of feeling.
Now, the Rebuild movies are a different matter. It actually seems like they know what they want to do this time. Especially with the characters. There's actually some growth, instead of just having them get more depressed, more horrible and never climbing out of the hole they dug for themselves. Shinji (the main, totally unlikable in the anime and original movie, character)actually grows a pair and stands up for himself and others at one point. These movies actually didn't make me hate Shinji Ikari, so that's a massive improvement so far, lol.
Here's hoping Anno and friends don't fumble this whole thing at the last minute like they did with the anime, because so far the Rebuild movies have been quite enjoyable
