According to the books, he was performing a mission in orbit to destroy some navigational data at the time. It would be awesome if they had that as a bonus mission.
I'll be up front, I hated what Halo 2 and 3 became, finding them shallow disappointments following Halo 1. Prior to Halo 2, I predicted its subjective failure and was sadly proven correct (note subjective please), and again with Halo 3. But the night before Christmas when I got Halo 2, I had hope, a sweet glimmer of hope for a second that it would actually live up to the teaser shown of an epic invasion of New Mombassa.
I say this first because while I would like to see Halo end with dignity, I deeply respect the potential it has (again, VERY subjective). I have not been interested in Halo Reach, but from what I've seen so far: Halo Reach gives me back that sweet taste of hope. I actually am quite glad that Bungie is going to end on this higher note, and when I eventually play Reach, I feel more confident than with Halo 2 or 3. There is a completely different tone that I see in Reach that makes me much more excited, not just for the game itself, but to see what Halo is really made of!
I only play single player and do not pay for Live, so the multiplayer aspect means nothing to me. What I see in the SP are a few things I'm quite excited about seeing that make for a good end of Bungie's Halo, things that I felt were lacking (subjective) in the prior two games: Deeper Storyline - The story of Reach just seems like it is being presented in a more entertaining fashion that makes me care more about the struggle. I felt very apathetic in the last two games, but Reach looks like it's hitting heavy and hard! Serious and Darker - Somewhat connected to the first, but the overall tone comes off with much more gravitas with the attack on Reach being a severe blow to the human race. Part of my apathy in the last two games has been because I personally could not take the presentation in its entirety seriously. More In-Depth Characterization - The squad members and their unique qualities speak for themselves. Less "Chosen One" Hero - You are a member of a squad of Spartans, there is unity, and you are fighting for humanity. Not just running and gunning because the rest of the human race are incompetent dolts. Elites - I really, REALLY missed the Elites, they were just such interesting components of the enemy ranks that could not be replaced by the monkeys-er-brutes. They feel like they mesh better with the entire Covenant design, whereas the Brutes just seemed out of place. No Flood - Okay, I don't know anything in-depth about Reach, but my guess is that the Flood did not make an appearance which I am EXTREMELY grateful for and make me really that much more interested in Reach. I felt like near the middle/end of the other games, it turned into a mix of fun alien-stomping and dull zombie-like redundancy. That Halo 1 Feeling - It sounds like Reach will hearken back to the first halo in some way, and that makes my nostalgia and I both pleased. Reach sounds like it takes a nice balance amongst all of the games, allowing a great advancement for the series because all of the titles had there gameplay highlights and faults that could melt together and make an unforgettable experience.
- A good campaign that will last me a good 3 weeks. Stupid flood is forcing me to send my games to a relative. I kept my 360 and the game that was in it: Modern Warfare 2. Not much on the single player replay value.
- Multiplayer will be very fun once I get access to it. The flood is forcing me to play single player only, no live.
- As an amateur forger, I was completely blown away by Forge World. So many things we can finally do without glitching.
A return to basics (see basics as Halo:CE) negating most of yathzee's view of "lets be like halo".
1)Controls are okay for a console
2)Health Meters? Checked!
3)Powerful Grenades? Checked!
4)Alien Rip-off? Well I don't think there are any cryo-pod scenes in this one but there is the good old suit of armor..
5)Head Zoom? None I think.
6)Voice actors? No problem on that side if I remember correctly.
Oh I highly doubt it's Buck. He was a vetran of reach with the Marines there. Not a Spartan. Besides wouldn't he still be a Spartan then? I thought this game is the fall of Reach.
I like Spartan 5. I can`t trust anyone named Jung after Jung in Rainbow 6 Vegas 2. Good that man was an idiot.
While I don't agree with you, I do understand how you feel. Mainly because what you stated is the exact reason one of my friends doesn't play Halo anymore. However, from playing the Beta I can tell you that this game is going more for the Halo 1 feel. The gameplay at least is more Halo 1-oriented.
So hopefully this will be the game your looking for.
Okay, I'm just calling it now: George is the first one to die, and most of the team follows in short order. Dr. Halsey is talking to Lord Hood; Number 6, and maybe (big maybe there) someone else (probably Kat), escape Reach alive against all odds and retreat to Earth (Tenner says they die at New Mombossa). There's going to be a cameo--or at least some mention-- of HALO Wars' red squad; and finally, this game will be massively dissapointing to die-hard fans of the series because A.) the single-player will only be slightly longer than HALO 3's, and B.) because it still doesn't feature Agent Texas.

Thank you for understanding ha ha! Despite my dislike for 2 and 3, I really am excited to see what Reach turns out. That's great news if it has a more Halo 1 feel to it because I still look back on that game with an overall great attitude. The closer to Reach's release, the more that positivity resurfaces for me.
I have to say that if any game made me want Live again, it would be this one. Sadly, I can't justify the cost for XBL due to time restraints for playing video games as it stands.

Oh, wait, I've got it: after you cover it with your fighter craft, you land inside...and #6 enters Cryo-sleep next to the Chief, thus becoming the second SPARTAN from the co-op campaign of HALO 1! And, because he bites it at New Mombossa, the HALO 3 campaign casts the second player as the Arbiter instead.
Saw that earlier. It's nice and makes me wonder who Halsey was talking to at the end.
What I'm excited for in Reach is actually basically tied into that question. I'm most interested in the story. I read the book way back when it first came out so I remember it being good but I'm a little fuzzy on the details. I want to play Reach to "live" through that story and see what changes they make to it.
As for me, I'm mostly interested in being able to either build my own race tracks or playing firefight with my brother. The campaign seems awesome and all, but Halo's story is more about immersion than about plot, sadly (though they seemed to get a good leg up with ODST, surprisingly).

yes, all that and the little stuff Bungie will stick/hide in Reach
just references to the book maybe, and of course the Master Chief and other past characters like Johnson
and heck, Halsey finally gets to show her face in a game? seeing the books (or mainly FoR) come to life in a game is pretty darn cool
