This screams Splinter Cell: Conviction to me. To be precise, we were shown terrible previews of both at first that didn't make sense to the fans. Now, both these characters actually look a lot alike. Translation? R* knows what they're doing. Trust the change.

I choose to remain sceptical based on the fact that its in the hands of completely different people than the first two games and the fact that they seem to be going away from the Noir style.
I'll reserve judgement of anything coming from this game till its in the hands of the consumer. Please Max Payne, in this period of generic military and gangster shooters...don't lose your refreshing style.

Good looking out Woodsey. It's not so much that I preferred baldy-Max to trenchcoat-Max (I'm a Film-Noir whore, so...yeah) but I'd have a problem if they changed designs mid-way, a la Infamous 2. It'd piss me off.

I'm getting L.A. Noire when it comes out anyway, so Max Payne 3 needs to focus on being good.

And all this talk of Max Payne makes me want to play the first two again...

I think you're missing the point. These really are comments based simply on the character design, which is boring as shit, taken from the three or four character design archetypes for male leads flying around these days. No one's saying Fisher came first, just that he's probably the most recognizable of this particular design right now. I'm more than familiar with Max Payne, and I was excited at the prospect of playing an older Payne that gives us maybe something new as far as main character designs. What can I say? I'm sick of playing young-to-middle aged white guys with short hair lean bodies and just enough stubble.
To be fair that was the character design to begin with. The beer belly baldy in a wife beater was a bit of a departure. Do I wish there was more variety in general? Yes. Hell, I'd even take that version of Max Payne, but not with an established character.

If anything Sam Fisher's been made more generic from his original design. I swear he's gotten younger and more generic with every passing iteration of the franchise.

That said, there's a pretty heavy bent on this site that if something even looks vaguely like anything else, clearly it's a ripoff with no value whatsoever. Which is more than a little irritating, to say the least.
I just thought in the recent game, Sam Fisher just ended up like Jack Bauer. That's bad.

At least Kieffer Sutherland made Jack look like he was progressively wearing down from season to season, which isn't something I can say about Sam Fisher.

I am with you on that. Game fans in general tend to be highly reactionary with this kind of junk. I'd also argue that they're way too quick to write off new designs for existing characters though, which also really annoys me and is in my opinion the reason why character designs rarely change (why can't an established character have a new design? Why can't they grow older? It's the difference between simple escapism and something abit more weighty in my opinion). This also annoyed me when people bitched about Infamous's main character and got him changed back. He...grew his hair out and changed his clothes? Is THIS the problem people had? What the hell?!

They have two screenshots to show after two years and they decided the best thing to show was a bright red floral shirt.

I'm not entirely sure as to how I feel about that.

And again, I'm all in favor of some change between iterations. For me the point that threw me the most wasn't the change in the character's appearance, it was the abandonment of New York in favor of Rio (IIRC). Where the original games were noir saturated action romps in the same vain as Sin City, the early information that came out looked a lot like the game was trying to be Just Cause. Now, I love Just Cause... well, Just Cause 2 anyway, and I actually liked the new character design, but why would someone use the Max Payne license to put together a game that had nothing to do with the previous iterations?

You're right that fans tend to be overprotective of how characters look, and the irony is we're discussing this off a strand triggered by a box shot of Conviction.

Now, if only we actually played Prophet in Crysis 2... :p
