As cool as that is, I can't help to think that I'm going to be strangled by one of those things in twenty years, when its connected to the super strong arm of one of billions of evil robots.

Oh yeah, I saw that hand in the Tokyo Science centre... they didn't show off that much though, it just caught a ball that was laucnhed at it from a catapult like thing.

Nah, we need to create a robot with a perfectly calculated misunderstanding of humor before we get GLaDOS. Also, we have to instal speakers everywhere so that it can talk to everyone.
well we already have robots that could lie about cakes :3

Yes, but the robots need to be aware that they are lying. If they claim that there is cake, and then someone makes cake available, the robot won't understand the significance of what has just happened, it will just understand that (cake != true) has become !(cake != true).

that is ridiculously awesome.

Soon, paraplegics will look down upon all of us flesh-limbs.

Oh lord, with that sort of technology we won't stand a chance when they inevitabely break their programming and choose to take over the Earth...

"So where are my giant killer robots", I ask?
Exactly, if humans want to we WILL achieve it, the fact a Mobile Suit robot is worth as much as a whole division of tanks if it emulates the show (Well as well as it can realisticly) then we are thoroughly boned.

And even worse when we finally figure how to Macross these mother fuckers.
Power armour mecha with Macross? Dear lord! Forget waiting for the AI. We have this tech now!

Hmmm makes me think.. *starts plotting*

Yes it is. We're all going to be murdered by robots, aren't we?

Hmmm, well on one hand I think robots are kind of a good thing. I tend to get irritated by all of the "mechanical revolt" science fiction stuff, as well as what they did to the work of guys like Issac Asimov in the movies.

On the other I do have a degree of concern about things like this robotic hand because in a practical sense we already have issues with employing our current population, and the more automation that can be reliably produced, the less nessicary a human factor becomes (except to suprervise the machines).

I've often thought that innovating this stuff is good, but I think there should be some effort made to preventing the large scale use of such technology until such a time as our population can sustain it.

Say for example if we unify the planet and start colonizing other planets, then things like super-fast robotic labour is going to be good. But right now, if you see robotics putting people out of work all it does is reduce the chance of us ever getting to that point by creating yet more problems.

Whether it's a machine takeover, or the poor machine hated for it's superiority, longing to be human, I think that to some extent we're jumping the gun here.

Think of it this way, right now one of our major issues in the US is the idea of illegal immigrants being used to do low-end jobs that businesses do not want to pay legitimate American citizens a livable wage for (resisting the evolution of the employment system, something that leads to a whole differant discussion).

You take that basic arm and you could suddenly start producing things like robotic janitors, painters, roofers, and simular things. Heck, add it to treads and it could even do field work (right now one of the reasons why they use real people is that no machine designed to pick fruit and vegetables has ever gotten it quite right since there is a technique to it, but I'd imagine that hand could do the job). Granted, right now it's too expensive, but in 20 to 30 years if there is a push for them? Like most technologies it could become affordable if there was demand.

Then you no longer have issues with illegals taking up American jobs, and giving employers an "out" to paying people what it takes to hire citizens. Instead you've got issues with no people being involved at all anymore.

... and no, I don't believe that techno-phobes are right that such things would be one step away from a real life version of "Skynet" or whatever. Rather I tend to believe it puts us close to Dark Future portrayals of human misery and squalor on a scale beyond anything we see now with even first world countries no longer being a relative exception.

I'm looking forward to GITS-style multi-fingers that let you type really, really fast. That'll cut down on my homework time by a lot.
