Ahoy hoy. I've been going through music, and found its rather bland all of a sudden. I've listened to it all to death.
What do you recommend?

I'm mostly into albums that have to be listened to as a whole to fully appreciate it. One or two songs worth listening to, and I don't see the point.
I'm talking albums like:
Ana Kefr - The Burial Tree
Devin Townsend Project - Deconstruction
Between the Buried and Me - anything from Alaska onwards
The Ocean - Heliocentric/Anthropocentric
NAMI - Fragile Alignments

Apart from this, I really dig bands that incorporate a strong harmony between their instruments. No chuggy-chuggy stuff.
By this, I mean bands like:
Dreamshade
The Human Abstract (except Midheaven. That album was putrid)
Misery Signals
Born of Osiris

For discussion purpose, do you have similar tastes, and why? What do you look for in music?
If I had to answer, I'd say, I look for music I can study, music that takes a few listens to fully appreciate it, and then a few more to fully enjoy it.

Post away! :)

EDIT: I'm into metal. I like just about any genre, but metal comes out on top for me every time. Probably should have specified that from the beginning...

Lykke Li - All (both? cant get to them right now) albums, though I like Wounded Rymes best.

Wolfmother - both their self named album and Cosmic Egg are very good.

Royksopp - I recommend Melody A.M. and The Understanding, though their others are good too.

Evanescence - Origin is my favorite, Fallen is good too but the songs that are in both albums are better on Origin IMO. Haven't listened to the other albums.

Anything on youtube by a guy who calls himself Derpidety. Very good mellow guitar. The guy is also a brony, which is what inspires his songs, so expect awesome fanart pictures (whether or not you like MLP) and music to match it.

Sonitas Vir - A wide mix of stuff between Mnemonic and Heartmender but I enjoyed all of it. These are done buy Renard, who does a crap ton of music across several different characters, each with their own style. Its about 99% electronic.

The following is specific albums by Renard's characters that I recommend.

Mayhem - Eggs and Other Songs

Klippa - So

Emoticon - Everything is Better in Color

The Queenstons - Sensorium

Kitsune^2 - Squaredance

Furries in a Blender - Storm World

And that is everything that I recommend the full albums of. If you are willing to look through some stuff, check out more of Renard's music. I would also say look for Pendulum's 3 albums, Deadmau5's stuff, some TaTu, Narcotic Thrust, and ATC.

And just for shits and giggles.

Because the song is silly and fun.

PS: I am now listening through stuff you mentioned, Ana Kefr is good so far and I'll get to the others shortly

EDIT: Forgot to mention Nightwish in there. The original singer is the one to look for. I don't care for their new singer though she isn't bad at all.

After browsing though what you mentioned, gotta say you like a LOT of screaming music. Not the stuff I usually go for, but nothing wrong with it. I will listen to just about anything if it catches my attention, but I usually go for mellow with a good beat or something nice and energetic.

You might like The Quick Brown Fox, another of Renard's characters. He calls the style speedball. Very intense and fast. I have to be in the mood to listen to it but its good.

Cheers mate, I'll have a look through some of them. :)
Btw, is Origin a new album from Evanescance? I've never heard of it.

Ana Kefr is amazing. So many different style mixed in. It's definitely my album of the year for 2011, by a long shot.

P.s. should have specified: I'm mostly into metal. I like dancey stuff, Deadmau5 and the others you mentioned, are fun to party along to with others. But, when I'm alone and want to concentrate on the music, I'll pick metal. My bad :)

Origin is actually from 2000 IIRC. Their sound is a bit different then but more to my liking.

Thanks for giving me some stuff to listen to next time I'm in the mood for that style of music.

Looked it up. Its their first demo CD. The songs that are also in Fallen have a more simplistic feel to them in Origin. There are also a couple songs on there that I don't remember being in their other albums.

Ah, ok. That's cool, sometimes I actually prefer the demo versions of songs. Gives it a raw feel, almost like it's real music and hasn't been produced to death. I'll definitely look it up.

Yea. It's not always the best quality (but always good), but that gives it a feeling like you are hearing it played instead of hearing a recording.

i dont know why, but every time i see these threads i get a huge compulsion to recommend this: though i suppose i have to recommend the whole album now... regardless, i dont know why... it always seems to be the exact opposite of what theyre looking for :/

errr... anyway, it seems youre looking for metal, yet again, and i dont have any, so the only real advice i can give you is to look for a new genre... and why not start with this! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ih8c6I1zH7I&feature=results_main&playnext=1&list=PLCD13D45944AD3DCE

no? :/

That gel -1.... its like background noise or something... would have to be doing something to listen to it. And if you like midi music and game sounding stuff you will like Kitsune^2.

Edge of Sanity - Crimson
Edge of Sanity - Crimson II

Both concept albums, both albums that must be listened to in one sitting, the first album is just one long track.
The two most incredible metal albums after The Great Misdirect.

System of a Down. Because System of a down must always be recommended.

Just a small sample of some of my favorites. Should be plenty there to your tastes.

Re-visit all of Devin Townsend's old albums. I've been listening to them for almost a decade now and I still find little details that I missed.

I just listened to The Burial Tree by Ana Kefr and the beginning of that song is fucking insane. Not my kind of music but holy shitballs... I kind of enjoyed it.

Also just listened to Failsafe by Misery Signals. Quite liked them too.

Although the vocals might not be to your tastes, I'm going to recommend Protest The Hero's incredible concept album 'Kezia'. I'm sure you'll appreciate what they do with their instruments even if you dislike the vocals. Here's a song off the album:

I'm gonna listen to a few of the other bands you listed and tell you what I think.

Origin is fairly old, I don't think Evanescence have released anything new for ages (actually, I think hearing they were on a hiatus or something - I used to have Origin anyway before it got stolen, along with The Open Door).

Anyhow, your OP suggests that you'd probably do best with concept albums, since in my experience you really need to hear the entirety of the album to really get it and enjoy it. Though I'm the sort who tends to enjoy everything on an album anyway :p. Regardless, although these are kind of varying in their styles (you may enjoy some but not all), these are the albums I'd recommend to you, and advise you listen to them all (with an open mind if you're only into certain music genres :p):

Gorillaz - Plastic Beach
30 Seconds To Mars - This Is War
Linkin Park - A Thousand Suns

My Chemical Romance -
listen to both The Black Parade and Danger Days, as they are actually different styles anyway as the band have evolved and changed over time.

Plan B - The Defamation Of Strickland Banks
Muse - The Resistance

I'm listening to Crimson right now. At first, I had to blink a few times to make sure my eyes weren't deceiving me. 40 mins!?!? And it's only 1 song? Wow. I'm impressed. I like it so far, will definitely keep listening.

Thanks man :)

I quite liked that. Reminded me of Destrage a bit (but a lot simpler. Destrage are simply spastic lol. I still love 'em though)

I'm glad you liked Ana Kefr. I'm going to assume you're talking about the intro to House of Distorted Mirrors. Yup, that's what made me first interested in them. It is simply insane!

And Misery Signals is a strange one. Individually, I don't really like their albums. The songs are great, but the albums have no flow.
However, if you put all three albums of shuffle, it is amazing. I can listen to them for hours on end that way.
Very strange... (probably not really, but I thought it was interesting :p )
