Um, dude, there was a minimum of 65 people killed, probably a lot more. In Australia and New Zealand, that's a shocking number of people.

I'm in Christchurch right now.
Everyone in my family is A-Ok but there is a buttload of damage to the city centre and the Cathedral ( A major city landmark) was badly damaged and its spire fell off.
Two buses had buildings collapse on top of them.
many buildings that have collapsed still have people inside that may be trapped under rubble, so the death toll is expected to rise.
Doctors on the streets started to help the wounded and random people started digging through rubble to look for trapped people.
I'm not sure if you're interested in any of this, just thought i'd say.

Yeah, I'm in Chch right now.
Some bodies in town. But I was really well off. I'm just sick of people saying liquification, as if on their word of the day calander. I had to help an old lady to a hospital. People are really friendly. Some families are offering to pick people up and give them roof for the night.

I'm up in Auckland, and I don't know anyone in Christchurch, but I'd gladly go down there and help if I could.

65 people dead. Expected to rise. That's quite a bit down here in NZ. Not to mention that the earthquake knocked the spire off of the Cathedral, which is a local landmark.

Damn, That whole region of the world is getting the shit kicked out of them by Mother nature. Hope it all stays steady and doesn't turn and worse.
That's true. Australia just had their flooding and category 5 cyclone. This continent doesn't seem to be safe :S
Not to mention the bushfires out W.A. way.
Well...the distance between Perth and Christchurch is comparable to the distance between Cairo and Cardiff. I hope they are ok over there, what with their riots and...um...Torchwood.

Having said that, though, the death toll from the quake is currently about 5 times the death toll of the floods, in a nation with 1/5 the population. The ratio of casualties to inhabitants is close to when the WTC was destroyed.
I realise that [the distance comment], I was just commenting that it wasn't just the east coast that was suffering from the natural disasters. Speaking as a kiwi-born Australian, I am horrified about the quake. The problem with the floods up in Brisbane was that not only did it hit the CBD (and took my old uni for a bit of a soaking), it hit prime agricultural land out Toowoomba-way. Then the cyclone hit and took the seasonal banana crops up north with it. So we might not have had so many casualties, but people are hurting economically. One store was done by the ACCC for selling a loaf of bread at $9.

But to see such a beautiful city as Christchurch be shredded like that is terrifying and horrific. I couldn't believe it, especially in the wake of the last one and the mine disaster at Pike River that happened. Seems like they just can't catch a break.

Fairly minor? The death toll is estimated to be as much as 1000+, the iconic Christchurch cathedral is in ruins, as well as an array of other buildings, varying old and new including the CTV building, not to mention Christchurch's last major earthquake, an earthquake which measured higher than Haiti, was only 2 months previous! You obviously don't understand the severity of the situation.

1000+? Where did you hear that?

Personally, though, I can't really care about the cathedral (even if it is a nice old building), it's the transit routes, hospitals and electricity/water/sanitation services that matter.

Estimates at the moment are varying anywhere from 100 - 1000+ which isn't unbelievable as Christchurch is New Zealand's second largest city, and the earthquake happened in midday, while everybody was at work in the CBD. As for the importance of the cathedral, its part of Christchurch's cultural identity and has been a big part of the city for more the century.

Hi, from Christchurch here.

I just got power back, not sure if the water is back but this earthquake totally owned the September earthquake, the death toll so far is at 65 confirmed, but I estimate it to be at least 200.

Just wanted to share my story with my favourite forum :D.

I was using the computer the time the earthquake occurred. When I got a little rumble at first I thought it was an aftershock like usual so I just sat there while watching some pony's (MLP forever), but as it grew to what seemed like a 5.0, I ducked under the door, this was pretty standard as it had happened many times before. But than my COMPUTER fell down, and shit just go real, this may sound selfish but my face was all 0_0""" when that happened, as the 7.1 didn't even nudge my computer. I knew this was one hell of an earthquake, and have just spent the past half a day listening to the radio and the horrible stories the people told.

I finally got to see what it actually was when I plugged my TV and it is devastating, blood on peoples faces, glass everywhere, bricks on cars, total destruction. I should feel lucky, for the only bad thing that happened to me was shattered windows, fallen bookshelves, and several computers falling down (While on and the hard drive running mind you).

Good to hear that you are okay. I heard about it here in Australia this afternoon.

It isn't as large as the last earthquake you guys had but has done a lot more damage. The death toll is scary. I don't know how I can help but I wish everyone you know the best and I hope that the after shocks aren't going to make things worse.

Really? You consider 65 deaths "relatively little"? How many casualties do you consider a lot?

65 deaths from a population of four and a half million is fairly minor indeed; that's 0.0014%.
Thats confirmed as of NOW, the first half day, trawling through the rumble. Not only are you looking at it from a purely statistical standpoint, which by the way is extremely cold and insensitive, looking at anything on a significantly larger scope can make it seem small.

Gaah! On top of all the death, the beautiful cathedral :( When I visited Christchurch my two favorite thing were the chocolate factory and that church, it truly was the centerpiece of the city D:

Hope you stay safe mate.

It is people dead. You do not seem to care that people have died from this. Loss of human life is not "fairly minor" however you want to put it. They may not have mattered in any way to you, but the least you can do is show a little respect by acknowleding their passing.
