0.0014% of the population now, yes. Even if it was to raise by a few hundred over the coming weeks, how much is that? 0.0019%? 0.0050%? Like I said: relatively minor.
As a proportion of the total population, yes, but compared to most single incidents that happen in New Zealand it's pretty big. It's likely to rival or exceed the yearly road toll (which is only 200 odd), and look at all the time and effort spent on road safety.

Its been my main goal in life for some time now to move to New Zealand when I'm out of college. Seeing stuff like this happening just hurts. I know its standard issue in a country in one of the most tectonically active regions of the world, but the cities are as beautiful as the natural environments there, and the people on average seem much more pleasant than those in many of the countries I've visited. The destruction and suffering there means a lot more to me than the recent so called 'natural disasters' in my own country.

Really? You consider 65 deaths "relatively little"? How many casualties do you consider a lot?
xFullmetalx said:
Fairly minor? The death toll is estimated to be as much as 1000+, the iconic Christchurch cathedral is in ruins, as well as an array of other buildings, varying old and new including the CTV building, not to mention Christchurch's last major earthquake, an earthquake which measured higher than Haiti, was only 2 months previous! You obviously don't understand the severity of the situation.

65 people dead. Expected to rise. That's quite a bit down here in NZ. Not to mention that the earthquake knocked the spire off of the Cathedral, which is a local landmark.
65 deaths from a population of four and a half million is fairly minor indeed; that's 0.0014%.
It is people dead. You do not seem to care that people have died from this. Loss of human life is not "fairly minor" however you want to put it. They may not have mattered in any way to you, but the least you can do is show a little respect by acknowleding their passing.
I don't go in for fallacy and fraud. Mourning, wishing people well and giving condolences serves no real purpose and helps the well wisher feel good infinitely more than it does aid the actual victim. This minor loss of life is no different to the millions of people that die every day due to starvation, thirst, disease, accident and age. As that earthquake was occurring, people were succumbing to months of famine and disease infestation around the world.

People die. A lot. All the time. Is it good? Not really. Is it bad? Not really. This is simply how our existence is.
If you or your family were the sole victims of an earthquake or flood, that'd be an insignificant loss then?

Err... I'm sure if you lived there or you family members did. Yuo would think differently.

This is bad though, feel very sorry for NZ, my Mum and Dad are going there for a month this October. Quite worried about them going now.

So you're saying there's no middle ground between "business as usual" and "genocide"? OK, then.

I wish you the best, and I truly hope that it's okay. I've got a friend in Christchurch I know is okay. PM me later in the day and I can see about him checking up on your bf's hotel (if you hear nothing else from anyone here) :)

Best to you and your man

Just got back home, no way to sleep; the aftershocks are frequent and irregular enough to keep anyone on edge, another two as I type. Lucky for me, all my whanau and friends are alive and comparatively unscathed.
It was a 6.3 on the Rickety Scale, but it was only 5km deep (that is fucking close to ground level), the CBD looks like it has been carpet bombed.
As for 'only' 65 deaths -I think anyone calling that 'minor' deserves a bullet- that number *will* rise, more than a few major office complexes are now rubble piles, the rescue teams are still going through the wreckage right now.
To anyone working for Stickmen Studios - hope you fellas made it out alright, all intact -know your friendly local engine devs have got your backs.
Make that four aftershocks.
I type slowly.

edit: Eico, your posts display a sociopathic nature.

Do tell me, with a quote, where I mentioned genocide.

I'm very curious.
Well, by bringing up the percentage of the total population, I thought you were implying that in order for the earthquake to be a big deal to you, it would have to put a dent in the total population.

So while you didn't bring up genocide, that's still pretty messed up. If that IS what you were implying.

Okay well except for the fucking cold & snow raping the streets every night.

Writing snow just makes me think of that blond annoyment-on-legs dude from FFXIII.

Thank you, Snow. I hate you.

Anywhere on earth is prone to earthquakes.

There had been an account where some obscure Japanese city miles away from any earthquake fault got hit by a catastrophic quake. Pretty much a shock wave from the major fault traveled into a minor fracture the city was close by.

I live on a minor fault line. My island is seperated by the mainland by a channel and every few year we experiance an earth tremour as the channel widens. Hopefully I'll be alive when my Island becomes part of Ireland.

Christchurch is not a big city with a large populace like many other cities who would consider this minor. And considering the devastation, yeah I wouldn't call it minor. My best friend almost lost her Aunty, she works in a hospital ward whose roof collapsed...she happened to be on lunch outside at the time. She has panicked all of yesterday about the 20 or so cousins noone could get in contact with. Relatively little loss of life? Does it matter how big or small the loss is? A life cannot be replaced, and they are expecting the toll to rise continuously.

So you guys werent touched by that volcano that screwed up travel plans with all the ash in the air?
The Volcano did not screw anything up. It made my best friend stay for ten more days with me. It gave me nothing but pure happiness.
Brings a tear to my eye to think of this Volcano. I wish it could do this again...I wish so.

I'd just like to say to all those speculating how major or minor this event is - I'd urge you not to. Just for the sake of the significant number of New Zealand and Christchurch Escapists - we're all pretty shocked by this and some are awaiting news of family and friends. Some may recieve terrible news in the upcoming days. Some may have already. Our third largest centre was just devastated, whether you consider this major or minor I don't think is relevant. Just be respectful.

I'm a christchurchian myself. I was in an upper floor lecture theatre when it happened. Pretty big, but I wasn't too scared since we've had earthquakes since September 4th last year. Turns out though that heaps of people have died and the city is pretty ruined. Several major buildings have collapsed, and the death toll stands at 65 confirmed though this is very conservative. I expect it'll be in the hundreds, maybe between two and three. Hundreds are trapped in collapsed buildings, you see, with multiple floors on top of them and fires and whatnot.

Hi, from Christchurch here.

I finally got to see what it actually was when I plugged my TV and it is devastating, blood on peoples faces, glass everywhere, bricks on cars, total destruction. I should feel lucky, for the only bad thing that happened to me was shattered windows, fallen bookshelves, and several computers falling down (While on and the hard drive running mind you).
Similar story for me, seemed about as bad as the first quake. Spent several minutes spouting profanity at the loss of a month old flatscreen- then when I calmed down and started getting calls on my mobile from a whole bunch of relatives and friends of my parents that I pretty much never talk to and hearing about what they were seeing on tv I started to realise just how bad it was and stopped caring about my own little problems. Was even worse when my power came on and I saw one of my friends on tv (dug my terrible old one out of the garage)looking pretty bloody terrified seeing she was working in one of the buildings in the CBD- just glad she was ok.
