Gotta go with... I can't remember what it's called, but the water level in Super Metroid. The music was gorgeous, the level was well put-together, and the Grapple Beam puzzles were completely awesome.

Maridia, that's what it was called. Yeah, Maridia was kickass.

Myst III was simply wonderful to play through. Graphics were on a par with today's, despite being 8 years old now, wonderful acting (yes, it used real human people as characters), and some of the most difficult and well put together puzzles I've ever seen.

Seriously, just look at the picture:

This is from 2001, by the way, when Halo looked like this:

Playing through it is as fulfilling as watching a good film. It's simply the most enjoyable environment I've ever played through.

Most JRPG's have beautiful settings and painstakingly detailed backdrops

Gonna break mine down a bit as there are a few that stick in my mind and I think deserve mention.

RTS; World in Conflict - no other RTS game has made me stop pan the camera and just enjoy the view it really did set itself apart from other RTS games at the time visually.

Pure graphical beauty; Crysis - it's technologically visually stunning at max settings, I may have said Far Cry 2 if it didn't crash every 20 minutes.

For atmosphere and design that sucks you into the game and doesn't let go (I wish I could say HL2) but it's been said before and I'll repeat many other people's opinion, Bioshock.

Also, I thought Prince of Persia has some visually stunning backdrops.

That sounded a little bit like an award ceremony.

Freelancer.

Space looks so damn awesome in Freelancer, how immersed you get in the atmosphere (no pun intended) with that game is amazing, the random radio chatter between NPCs, trade convoys zipping back and forth and the skyboxes look pretty.

Diablo 2

and Shadow of the Colossus
I'm rather fond of riding around on the horse or grabbing a bird and flying. I also enjoyed the first snake colossus. Quite pleasant to swim with.

Yeahh I'll agree with you there.

I liked the setting to 2 worlds, It was ridiculously varied, shame nobody else ever got very far. There was deserts, jungles, all kinds of civilisations. Twas awesome :D

The Ancient Land from Shadow of the Colossus.

Such a beautiful place. The art direction was really top-notch; you really got the feeling you were in an ancient, abandoned civilisation. Even though all the colours are washed-out, making it seem a little depressing, I still think it's one of the most hauntingly beautiful video game worlds I've seen. You know that there were people here before you, but you have no idea where they have gone or why. It's got temples, forests, deserts, lakes: everything you could ask for.

Plus, you're completely alone. I like being alone.
