Watching your destination slowly appear from over the horizon in Wind Waker makes me happy. In fact, pretty much every Zelda has a pretty spectacular looking setting, in its' own way. I always like the seedy, garish colours of Termina, although I wouldn't say it was "nice".

i thought some of Mass Effect's settings were quite pleasant, like near the fountain in the citadel.

Farcry or Crysis.. beautiful tropical island ftw.

But as for nicest.. id go Hyrule. I always have a tear in the corner of my eye at the end of Zelda games, everyone looks so happy when the camera flys around the world.

Well, for the consoles, I'd have to say Shadow of the Colossus. With most of the boss fights, I felt I would actually die if I fell off the things. You can go on and on about draw distance and the like, but when falling off of a 6 story high behemoth feels just like that, the game's doing something right.

PC-wise, I'd have to say the Waverider map on Combat Arms. There's some nice buildings and such to run around on, you can lounge by the ocean, and look over nearly the entire map from a nice tower. Shortly before you get owned by someone who was actually playing the game.

Probably enjoyed by time in Oblivion and Shivering Isles. My first real "wow" moments. Fallout 3 is good too. Wasn't crazy about Mass Effects environments. Pretty bland.

Really enjoyed San Andreas more than the other GTA's. Best music to explore with too.

Going old school, I'd say the land in Magic Candle was nice. Lots to explore and lots of characters to interact with. Duke Nukem 3d had great environments - much better than Doom or Quake. Great Easter eggs, puzzles and humor. Then there is Roller Coaster Tycoon. Had a lot of fun making my own environment.

Looks: Farcry.
Over all: Crystal Palace in Paper Mario, I have to agree. It was just very, very cool. Star road was OK too.

Tamriel! I just love going to the Jeral Mountains and looking out onto the land, just awesome... Gonna go play Oblivion now!
Agreed. I stood on a little rope bridge west of there and watched the sun rise over the distant Imperial City. It was majestic.

However I think I would rather live in Fable's Albion. Especially in Brightwood; before it got trashed in the second one. Such a happy place.

Okay so I'm going to have my first choice as The Forbidden Land from Shadow of the Colossus. Even if the textures weren't that well rendered its still great to see the level of detail they put in. All the locations give you an odd sense because you're getting so little information on what is clearly a rich and developed world. Seeing every ruin makes you wonder the the magnificence of the civilization there before it fell into ruin and the specific locations for the fights with the Colossi are all incredible.

Honorable mentions will go to Chrono Cross for the El Nido archipelago, Okami for its artistically rendered version of Nippon, Prince of Persia for its... setting, the sleak version of the future shown in Mass Effect, the historically researched cities in Assassin's Creed and the Land of the Dead in Grim Fandango... shit there are a lot of nice worlds. I've also heard that Planescape: Torment has a really cool setting as well as the Myst settings.
Also Earth is a really nice playthrough in some locations.

City 17 from Half-Life 2 and Episode One really drew me in. During the first parts of HL2 it felt genuinely oppressive and dictatorial and you were the 'man-on-the-run' - then when you make your return later in the game it really feels like you're in the middle of an full-fledged uprising against the Combine and subsequently a race against time as everyone is fleeing the city in Episode One.

Tie between Cyrodiil (TES IV: Oblivion), Capital Wasteland (Fallout Triple), and the Great Sea (Wind Waker)
