Lesse... a $200 console vs a $300 console and a (as of current speculation) $150 accessory? Gee, I wonder what the casual gamers will pick?

I don't think Microsoft or Sony will get many new customers from Kinect or Move, but they certainly stand to take a moderately sized chunk out of Nintendo's market. People in the market for a new console, especially families, now have something to consider instead of the Wii. Furthermore, both companies already have a fairly large existing market. In my family for example, I'm the only one who really uses the Xbox360, but we plan to buy Kinect anyway. People forget that the "Hardcore" gamers who own consoles often have people (siblings, parents, room mates, girlfriends) attatched to them who might be attracted to the more casual, motion control thing but are unwilling to buy a Wii (funnily enough, my family does have a Wii, we just don't use it).

I think the problem is, is that although, yes, all those games are bridging the market(sort of), most people don't want a bridge built. That bridge happens automatically. If you are the kind of person who is going to enjoy upmarket titles, you will get them when you want them. But in terms of hardcore titles, I guess if you like constant remakes and sequels to games that have already had forty sequels than have tons of fun. I don't mind a couple of sequels to a game if it was good enough and made enough of an impact, but this is just getting ridiculous. ANOTHER Zelda AND another Metroid? Really Nintendo? When I said they are not making anything good, I think I more meant that even though they have more money than some countries, they refuse to innovate any more than the Wii and they refuse to make anything except the same games.

Microsoft and Sony not doing casual titles? Thats just funny. Did you watch E3? They both managed to make a motion control system that has games even more pus.... I mean kiddy than the Wii.

Firstly, if you are keen about this subject I 'd like to point you to this article. It's old, from 2008 but it is AMAZINGLY prophetic, I think this guy has totally "figured out" the Wii, but more importantly whte wider gamign industry:

But, I have to contest this one sentence in particular you made:

"If you are the kind of person who is going to enjoy upmarket titles, you will get them when you want them."

The "type of person" you are is irrelevant, there is nothing fundamentally different in the character and personality of someone who plays action-adventures games and those that don't. It's just a non-gamer simply can't even GET STARTED with these upmarket games even if they were interested, too many barriers of experience and gaming intuition needed. Hell, how could they know if they liked it, they never even played an action-adventure game before!?!

That bridge CANNOT happen automatically, it can happen with little kids (because their brains can learn so damn quick and they imitate their older peers well) but for MILLIONS of people they look at games like Gears or Killzone 2 and they wouldn't even know where to start. They'd get bamboozled with the controls, confused with the objectives, they don't have the hand-eye co-ordination to even START to ENJOY those games.

Bridge titles like Mario Kart Wii, a game that is usually not bundled but sold separately has sold over 22 MILLION copies! That knocks out even Modern Warfare 2's sales. They ARE selling and I think they are serving their purpose.

It's all ingeniously simple, the Wii mote in a steering wheel, it's such a natural introduction but VITAL for introducing New Wii gamers - who may only have experience playing around at Wii Tennis before - the nature of conflict and competition, navigating a 3D space, avoiding obstacles and the challenge of the Win.

The lineup of Rail Shooters separately introduces the challenge of precise aiming under pressure, without the worry of having to simultaneously navigate the 3D space, the experience is still made familiar. Also, 2D platforming games (new Mario bros Wii) have greatly featured on Wii, and they suit the purpose as bridge titles. With only 2 dimensions of freedom and no worries about camera perspective, this gives the opportunity to master more direct conflict and avoidance of enemies and navigating an environment... but most importantly they can do all this while HAVING FUN!

A complete novice is not having fun wandering around a level of Halo or Killzone, getting killed repeatedly and unable to get any kills or even know which way to go. As without the EXPERIENCE or skillset needed to even begin playing, then their first gaming experience could be a huge turnoff. And I'm not talking mere familiarity with gamepad vs Wii-mote, I'm talking about confidence and expectations.

I'd also like to clarify, and perhaps I should have emphasised more the past tense, that Microsoft/Sony HAVE been aiming too far up-market with very expensive consoles from the start and that cannot be changed now, higher game prices, higher development costs, too slim a profits.

Switching focus downmarket this late in the game is too late, they STILL have very expensive consoles and expensive peripherals that can pump out graphics that novice gamers will be unlikely to appreciate. The price is the biggest issue and complexity.

They are being birdmen, copying Nintendo's feathers in form (move) or function (kinect) but I think failing to realise the actual dynamics of their flight, how they can fly so high.

I think they should take a clue from the BIGGEST "casual" market out there at the moment, Browser-hosted, Flash-based, ad-funded games... they all use the humble computer mouse. I've been singing the praises of the humble computer mouse for a while now in its ergonomics, familiarity, effectiveness, and utility in ALL gaming applications. And they are cheap, unlike Kinect/Move. I'd build on that.

No, please, no! I want to be an unbiased consumer!

OT: Nintendo is always going to have ammunition. It is a combination of fanboys and fanboys that fuel their tanks campaign to monopolize the gaming industry. I think Nintendo has the upper hand at the moment but we'll see what happens.

Quite frankly, I don't care. The console war is going to inevitably end up a stalemate once the nukes have been launched at each companies HQ. Then we can return our attention to the PC/Mac war!

Why don't you man up an sell your Wii then?

You have a lot of harsh words for the Wii, so harsh it's quite clear that you are never going to give it a chance, why don't you do the right thing and sell it on the open market where someone like me would be keen to get a 2nd hand system that has seen minimal use. But your cop out of mothballing rather than selling shows you don't have that much confidence in your conclusion, you just seem to want to shut it away.

That is the WORST place for a console to be, locked away in a cupboard. It's a waste, and I don't think you even WANT to give it a chance as you say you haven't played it... you don't even KNOW if you'd like these games as you haven't played them. You seem to have just taken a cursory look at them and dismissed them because they aren't mature and original enough.

As to why I want to play "a game that interested me when I was 8 years old"

Ever seen a Pixar movie? You will grow out of this machismo-posing of "must... have... mature GAEMS!" when you actually reach adulthood and learn to appreciate the classic things in life. Actually, you may simply be too young to remember Zelda, Goldeneye, Donkey Kong, Metroid. Hmm I'm trying to think what your generation would be nostalgic of and I really despair.

All you can see is the superficial "a MOnkey Hump a Rhino across a level" which you completely contradictorily call "generic". No. Just NO! You clearly have no idea what that word means, you have heard that word used to criticise games like Halo ODST only seem to assume it is just a general word of disdain like "it's shit".

No. Generic means "Relating to or descriptive of an entire group or class" which is applicable to halo ODST as it is generically so similar to the hundreds of other shooters released in recent years, just another halo-like FPS. But what the hell is Donkey Kong like? To spite being an old franchise it is doing something REALLY unique compared to almost all the other games released in years.

But the games Nintendo have showcased to spite being based on old franchises we have not seen any of them in so many years and over a decade for many:
Goldeneye: not since 1997
Zelda Skyward Sword: not since 2006
Metroid Other M: no 2D platforming Metroid since 1994's Super Metroid
Donkey Kong: No games since 1999, no 2D platformer since 1996
Kirby Epic Yarn: not since 1997

Nobody is tired of these franchises, they are LONG awaited. So anticipated and Wii has had plenty of great new stuff like:
-Red Steel 2
-The Last Story
-Epic Mickey
-those Resident Evil Rail Shooters
-House of the Dead: overkill

And if all you can see with Mario Galaxy is "watching a fat plumber eat mushrooms" you are obviously not jaded enough. Go spend a decade playing endless generic shooters like (I and many others in my generation have spent the last decade or so on), then all of a sudden the joyful and creative platforming and exploration of a classic Nintendo games will be a breath of fresh air.

It's a damn shame that you are too young yet at the same time not old enough for the Wii console. My guess is adolescence, you're a teenager careering towards manhood, you can ONLY look to the more mature stuff as to look anywhere else would be an affront to your development. I've been there, in the early 2000's I wouldn't be seen dead playing on a "kiddy" gamecube.

But I'm 22 now and majorly keen on highly competitive online shooters on PC, but I still keep going back to my Gamecube which I discovered only relatively recently and the solid Nintendo titles. A violent shooter excites but drains me. Playing Wind Waker's stylised adventure, I don't know how Nintendo does this better than anyone else but it just reinvigorates me.
