Folks, let's discuss the concept of "instant gratification."

Instant gratification is when you sit down to watch a movie, then five minutes in decide to either fast forward to the ending or turn off the player and ask somebody else how it ends.

Instant gratification would be like if Raiders of the Lost Ark was just Indiana Jones flying to Cairo, digging up the Ark, and hauling it back to the States.

What's more satisfying and memorable in the end? Finally beating a boss that kicked your ass ten times before and even getting yourself to the point you can beat it without getting hit, or sitting around like a lump watching while the computer does it for you?

This news isn't actually new, it's been shown on multiple occasions since last year, but people don't realise that in a sense this could bridge the gap between 'casuals' and the core gaming audience. There will be no need to make games easier in a sense, there will be a sort of autopilot for non core gamers to understand puzzles and other mechanics and then take the helm when they feel they are ready.

GameOverhinker did a piece on it a few months ago , I'll post it up next week into my thread of the same name if this becomes a hot topic.

Hurray now the Wii can play movies too.
The Wii's getting Metal Gear Solid?

And beside. Alone in the Dark has that feature already. Or did most of you forget that?
Of course they didn't. They just ignored it. Anyway my thoughts on this are above.

The fuck? Is Nintendo so desperate for casual game cash that they have to make the games play themselves? Or is it that they're just fucking idiots?
Maybe they hope that eventually the games will buy themselves too (people sure as shit won't...)

This defeats the purpose of a game.

It's like what Yahtzee said in his review of Super Paper Mario, a game defeats the purpose if you need to entertain yourself while playing it. If the game plays itself, and you get the fun from playing it, then the game isn't fun and defeats the purpose.

Most modern games are so easy the virtually play themselves anyway. I can't remember the last time I saw a "Game Over" screen.

Meh, Nintendo's been fairly weird for awhile now. If anyone was expecting hardcore gaming on the wii to last they are sorely mistaken.
This is just the nail in the coffin.
Let's face it, It's for causal games and wii fit users.

Not only that but there was a reward for not using it (or a punishment if you did, half empty/half full). With things like trophies or achievements you don't really want everyone seeing how much you suck. Without some kind of reward for not using it there is no incentive.

If someone said to me today "Nintendo can actually get more casual" I would've have said "Noway, they've gone as casual as you can get before they completely ignore the "hardcore""

And yet here we are

So don't use this. Nothing is forcing you to.

I see something like this primarily for children. You know, five year olds and what not.

I'm talking about the older ones. I was never good at the original Mario games.
Even the older ones were, at best, middle-of-the-pack difficulty. Not easy, but nowhere even close to something like Super Ghouls&Ghosts, Ninja Gaiden, or Contra.

How is watching a friend play a hard part in a game for you any different from watching the game play a hard part in itself?

I heard about this feature, and if they want to release it, fine by me, I (probably) won't use it - and if it helps get casual gamers more into hardcore games and thus make real games more popular, why not?

Edit: I've put some thought into this thing. I probably would use that feature, just to see wtf the crappy AI is going to do :p watching stupid bots is always amazingly entertaining.

Oh, I agree. I don't even get why I'm not good at the Mario games... but still, you see my point. One of the harder series of games has been getting progressively easier, and now it's to the point where it plays itself. It's sad.
