Wait wait wait...giving teens access to birth control is "completely against the morals of the majority of the population in the U.S"? Ok, let's test that statement. Top result in Google for search terms: "Gallup Birth Control". Data for the study days to May 3-6, 2012. Stats:

The article later shows the results when dividing the respondants by political affiliation. Amazingly enough, the data shows a minimal difference by party on this subject, with 87% of Republicans viewing birth control as morally acceptable, 90% of Democrats saying the same, and 89% of Independents agreeing. Of course, it could be argued that the writer was speaking of premarital sex being against the moral majority, but even that falls flat, as 59% of respondents stated that sex between an unmarried man and woman was morally acceptable. ...And I got all that from less than 5 minutes of research. Was this writer even trying? I mean yeah, it's a high school paper, but I'd have hoped that students would have started to figure out the importance of finding proper sources at that point.

By "majority of the population" I guess she was talking about Christians, which (as of my knowledge) is the majority in America, but her mistake is thinking every Christian thinks the same as her, which is amazingly naive.

No breathing human? Does that mean we're allowed to advocate birth control/abortion as long as we hold our breath?

People who equate birth control with abortion are either completely stupid or willfully lying. Birth control prevents a pregnancy from ever happening, therefore by definition it cannot be an abortion. An abortion is the medical act of removing an established pregnancy.

That said, I'm a breathing person and I say that both birth control and abortion are okay. I probably would not be here posting but for a medically necessary abortion.

And I don't particularly care what anybody else happens to think, until they start trying to remove my rights to them because they choose to buy into bullshit.

I have always felt the idea that life doesn't begin at conception is a little off base. Biologically, basically every definition we use to define what constitutes life is met at conception.
This...is not true at all. There are several definitions of life that include things such as sentience, the ability to react to stimuli, the possession of instincts, or at least possession of a brain and brain waves. None of those apply to a blasocyst at conception.

Also, the idea that life begins at conception is *very* new...It only started being popular during the Reagan years. Before then, nobody had issues with first trimester abortion or birth control. And it didn't come from a random scientist learning some new fact...It came from the religious right needing a new cause to rally around, and abortion being chosen.

Edit: Buggered the quoting.

It more comes down to when you view this fetus as equal to the life of a fully formed human and whether or not you value that more than a persons right to choose. I am pro-choice but I still recognize that it isn't this black and white issue that the extremes in this issue seem to try to push it.
In Australia I think a fetus is recognised as alive under the law at 26 weeks (or there abouts)

OP: We had a school newsletter that came out every Friday, but we didn't have anything like that, ours was very sensible and informative, like who was playing who in the interschool sports teams, recent major events or upcoming ones.

Oh shit! I didn't have pre-marital sex until I was 20! I'm fucked, whatever shall I do?
I'll keep doing it, because my partner and I enjoy it and I think it's a way of telling her that I love her. If there wasn't contraceptives until we were married or whatever? Anal it is!

Arming schools? I think this is actually reasonable, as not only will it help with shooters, it might keep general trouble down as well. My high school newspaper was stuff like 'No driving to school' and 'Volleyball team sign-up'. But most people think Abortion is wrong? I wonder why debates are so divided if pro-choice is a minority...Me? I think it's a choice, but should only be available by circumstance. Someone was raped? Sure, perfectly fine...Mother not able to support it? The choice of that or adoption. Birth Control? As that picture of the mounted grenade launcher said: 'Fuck Em and everyone around them'

What's the difference between abstinence and birth control then? Is it our duty to ensure that every fertile female is pregnant constantly? I know that math is not everyone's strong suit but trust me when I say that the earth can't support a human population of the size we would soon have. If you think this argument through, it doesn't make a lick of sense.

I oppose anything like this that restricts people's freedoms. Telling people what to do just because some long-dead people wrote a book a long time ago just doesn't make any sense at all. Many of the things in there no longer apply because of new technology and social changes. It's time to give up the fairy tales and start investigating for ourselves, I believe the word for that is science.

I received a copy of my high school's newspaper today, and started reading the opinion page. What I saw was perhaps some of the dumbest things I have ever read on a sheet of paper.

Oh boy.

I'm actually not for abortion (I am in support of birth control, though), but that was just 10 different levels of stupid.

If that wasn't enough, a different writer decided to give her totally educated, knowledgeable, and non-partisan take on gun control:

You've gotta love the American South

You know a report is well cited when they list the NRA as an official source. Also, "better safe than sorry"? Really?

So, I would ask about the topics presented, but these are obviously misinformed, indoctrinated, and naively ignorant writers, so let's just talk about our present/former high school newspapers. Was yours as stupid as mine? Did you enjoy it? Did you even read it?
Inquiry, why did you block off her name and picture?

Clearly she isn't ashamed of this position.

I laughed and almost woke everyone up. You win my daily portion if internets and its only 4AM. Well done.

Well shes a moron. End of story. If you oppose birth control on the basis that "YOU MIGHT NOT HAVE BEEN BORN" you pretty much sign up for every women being pregnant all the time. If you cant waste sperm in a condom why the fuck do you get to waste eggs in a period. What the fuck am i meant to do with ALL this sperm i keep making every damn hour, every one a potential life wasted. Freeze ALL of it?! Castrate myself?! Dont really see the logic behind this at all.

I used to do comics for my school paper in my final year. One month I decided to see how many dicks I could hide in the comic and still get it printed.

Evidently your school paper puts the dicks in plain sight, and even lets them write articles, OP.

Not only is she acing her classes, she's on our student council. :p
Good grades aren't necessarily a sign of intelligence. A friend of mine got straight A's in all his classes but was adamant cats actually had 9 lives and that punching a fat person would cause their fat to bunch up in the neck causing suffocation [because he saw it in a movie].

If.

I don't. Many others also don't. And so far those who do haven't been able to give a us a reason to think otherwise. At least, no reason better than "because I think it's wrong".

Well, you're welcome to think it's wrong, and moral vegans are welcome to think that eating meat is wrong, and extremist animal rights groups are welcome to think that owning pets is wrong, and my friend is welcome to think that wearing white socks is wrong, but none of that makes any difference to me because none of you have ever made a convincing argument as to why I should think those things are wrong.

If you can persuasively tell me why I should regard an organism with no nervous system as a human being, then I might change my mind. Otherwise, I don't see why aborting a fetus before it has the ability to form memories, think, or feel is an act of evil.

Breathing is for weak beings who still walk the mortal coil.

But I still think this is stupid.

Just to play the Devil's advocate here:

Do you consider it wrong to kill someone who has the ability to form memories, think, or feel?

If so why? Once they're dead they won't REMEMBER or FEEL being killed. Is it because they then won't be able to CONTINUE living and feeling, and forming memories? Because by that logic it seems equally wrong to kill a fetus that can be expected to do those things in the future.

For the record I do support the right to abortion, but I would not say it's a topic to take lightly. Nor that there aren't some genuine arguments to be made against it.

Of course most of the people that argue against it are idiots :D

Because I've seen enough of the Internet to know what can happen to someone when people are

A. Pissed

B. Have their name, school, picture, and other basic information.

I know that that stuff probably wouldn't happen in this community, but I'm not going to chance this girl getting harassed by a bunch of basement dwellers because of some stupid opinion piece she wrote in high school.

"I was catholic until I reached the age of reason." George Carlin.
Weird, same thing happened to me.

I recall my school paper to be bland and, annnnd, hmm. I don't even know if my school had a paper.

As for the controversial fun, I don't think I would be ok with my g/f having an abortion. While it would cause massive changes in our lives, we would still have the capacity to pull it off and probably raise a decent human being. I have no problem with others choosing abortion though, I think it would just bother me to the end of my days.

But if our situation was drastically different, as in, shit, this kid will drastically reduce our meth purchases! It might be a good option.

As for the armed guards in school...

Seriously?

We have come to the point where the NRA think that installing armed guards in our schools will help reduce gun related violence in said schools, instead of actually limiting the availability of guns to the public?

Those of us that are American live in a country where we can easily purchase a device that has only one purpose, to kill.

But I cant buy fucking Bucky Balls anymore because they are dangerous.
