Someone mentioned grammar in the articles, and I couldn't stop noticing all the mistakes xD. For the abortion article, she's obviously entirely uneducated on the subject in any significant way. As for the second article, while the writer is a moron at best, the title used to find that article was a bit callus and stereotypical. Armed guards in schools don't promote security when guns can fire hundreds of rounds a minute. If someone gets it into their head to kill their classmates and plans it out, they will succeed to some degree; the only way to affect how much damage they can do is to limit the weapons they have access too. Adding more guns to the mix increases the chances of human casualties, intimidates students, and generally creates fear in a school population (For me cops are scary not because they can give me a ticket for speeding, but because they have a gun that they are well trained to use. Doesn't matter that the gun is suppose to protect me and the officer, it's still scary)

In reality there are very few justifiable reasons that a school should have guns: If the school is an active target for militant or extremist groups(such as the case with the school teaching the president's daughters), students' lives are in danger (such as when southern schools were desegregated in Kentucky), or the region is in a constant state of turmoil and unrest (such as schools in the middle east).

Well that's my two cents into the matter. carry one ladies and gents

My HS newspaper was somewhat... a lot better than this one. xD

The newspaper group had mostly educated and passionate writers and while they tended to be naive on some topics, they weren't stupid.

Also, it's Canada, so anyone claiming either of these things would be laughed out of the room.

Oh...joy...another abortion thread...

Getting my opinion out of the way, I see nothing wrong with the birth control pill, I personally don't like abortion, but I'm not against it. There, done, let's move on. Don't respond to this part of my post, I won't read it.

So, on topic. While I entirely disagree with the person who wrote the article, I do have this to say. People can have different opinions, don't sink down to their level by attacking them. Only act against them if they do something about their opinions that harms someone else.

There was a push to remove the "free platform" concept from my local student union, basically as a means to try and curb any BNP or EDL groups that might exist within the university. What bothered me wasn't so much the free-speech issue, but the fact that being a BNP member isn't even illegal. I mean, I hardly want these guys to be around, but I don't think stifling the voice of a (somewhat) legitimate political party is the right thing to do. Let them have their platform, and let people decide if they're a pack of fucktards for themselves.
I don't agree. As I understand it the BNP has at least in the past had a platform of fairly overt racism. No university owes them a platform to spout their hatred, especially when that hatred has a very real likelihood of targeting the very students who go to the university. If they want to have their platform, let them have it on a street corner.
Yes, the BNP is racist, and I can see why people don't feel they should have a platform. But where exactly should the line be drawn? After all, the conservative party is kind of racist and prejudicial at times too, and I wouldn't mind seeing them losing their platform. The thing is, the BNP is as legitimate a party as the conservative party, so if we as a society allow people to identify as BNP, vote BNP, or pass around BNP material, does it make sense for a Student Union to treat the BNP any differently from any other party?

I recognise you can take this to the opposite extreme too; "if you let the BNP have a platform, shouldn't you provide one for the KKK or neo-nazis too?" I haven't figured out an answer for that yet.

Well... Shut Up!

Jk. I guess if there's ever a good time to do that, it's senior year. If I even wore an MLP shirt to my school, I would get my shit kicked in less than an hour.
yeah, this article was from the perspective of someone who was not yet a casual fan introducing people to something they didn't know about in a humorous way.

Blow jobs. The only logical conclusion to how she's in that position.
And that technically isn't sex so you still won't be guilty of premartial sex. Just like if you do it anally /sarcasm.

Dumb article. While I still can't pick a side on the whole abortion issue (except in cases of rape where I'm all for), denying birth control is the stupidest shit I've ever heard. Also it may just be that the only things I've been reading for the past 4-5 weeks have been scientific articles, but I'd really like to see some sources for some of those moral stats she's throwing out.
Funny you mentioned anal. The local University where I live is christian based, so a few of the kids who go there come from that religious back ground*. Anywho, I found out a few years ago that there is an "unofficial" anal sorority, wherein the group of girls involved willingly allow guys (usually their boyfriends) to ride that Hershey highway, under the delusion of keeping their wholesome virginity intact until marriage. Never mind the fact that the act goes against their religion.

As a learned individual, I took it upon myself to investigate this group by "poking" around. The knowledge I acquired was quite "pleasant".

----------------

*Fun fact: The majority of said University is filled with kids from all over the US who don't come from Christian backgrounds.

Thank you for the hearty laugh, OP. I was worried about how I was going to work off those potato chips while it's so cold outside and the treadmill's broken.

There was never anything even close to this in any newspaper at my school. Everything was always super PC, but that could be because I'm from Toronto. Maybe there are cultural differences?

Also, I don't mind that she has those opinions (although I totally disagree). What bothers me is that she is trying to force her ideals on others. If I want to go out and have premarital sex, what does it matter to her? It won't taint her moral purity or whatever. I mean, I'm not going to force her to have sex, what right does she or anyone else have to tell me what to do?

When I was in middle school, I was approached to write an editorial for the paper. I wrote said piece stating why the Iraq War was a bad idea (this was when it was literally just starting). Thus began the only spat of bullying I had to endure. I, being none too thrilled at being called a dumb liberal *****, never contributed again.
At least people read yours ;_;

Actually, what made me laugh is that it appears to be firing the entire shell casing.

Birth Control is good
Abortion is bad
This journalist is fucking atrocious. I can't even begin to think how many ways this goes against journalistic responsibilities, not to mention how much of a **** she sounds like.

I don't see how I have any business telling anyone whether they can or can't use BC or abortion, so I guess I'm pro-choice. As for guns, gun control is counter-productive, insulting, and dangerous, any person willing to look at the facts objectively will see this. I would raise my flame shield, if I actually cared.

Also, my school didn't have much of a paper. I never knew anyone who read it. I think we had a controversy because of something one of the lesbian writers wrote, but it was over the administration's reaction to it, not what she said. We had a big wear pink day or something.

RE: Birth Control
You monsters, how could you!

Could be considered NSFW, you push play you take responsibility for that.

I love the Japanese take on Christianity

Oh my goodness; Look at all of these opinions. It's almost as though people shouldn't choose for themselves!

Ok, the first article is just an idiot. I'm guessing either over-zealous religious nutjob [Not bashing religion, there are a lot of reasonable theists out there. Then there's the unreasonable ones who spout ideals very similar to what this girl is spouting, which makes it look like there could be a link. Kind of sad I've got to say this to be sure really...], or just some absolute nutjob. Any level of logical thinking destroys any argument she could have. And the whole "No breathing person has the right to say birth control or abortion are OK." or W/E... Yeah, genius. If that's the case, no breathing person has the right to say its wrong either, so how about you shut up about it 'cause last time I checked, you were a breathing person.

The second one has a little more ground. Its an opinion, its not entirely unfounded, and whilst I don't agree with it it has some level of reasoning behind it.

On a much more important note, that has been said many times already;
GOOD GOD GET THAT NEWSPAPER AN EDITOR.
SERIOUSLY.
The formatting in that thing, especially the second one, is bloody awful. It almost hurt to read it due to how stupidly it was set out. Just... If you've got three words on a line, and twice as much empty space as space filled with words, shove another words in there please, for the love of god. It just looks stupid if you don't.

Thankfully school's here in Australia don't have school Newspapers, or if they do there's not many of them. If they did exist I just know I'd be going up to a lot of people and telling them how stupid they are.

My school had a paper... that our principal edited with a black marker whenever anything not related to school events or someone making her look good came through. She also cut my comics whenever I decided to use slapstick comedy, and gave me detention and cut me from the staff when I tried to use the "Tom and Jerry is more violent!" argument.

As for editorials that didn't get published, we had a rule. Cite sources, or it get cut early. Either be on site investigating, or cite a source, or it didn't happen. Rule worked fairly well, even opinion pieces had to cite sources if they called up a generalization or statistic.

Surprisingly I went to a school in Oklahoma, the slightly-more-sane state.

As for the abortion thing... its the woman's choice. Only morally sound argument. It is her child, she has to deal with the stress of carrying it to term and (if we are dealing with increasingly outdated gender roles that are often reversed) will wind up taking care of it. So I post it as her choice entirely. The potential loss of another human life is negligible, and we are facing a overpopulation issue down the line anyway.

As for legitimate points of view for going against it, since I used to debate a lot and I love playing devil's advocate, would be that we removed a person from existing at all. If you believe in souls, then there is the problem of if that embryo has a soul, and if you just killed its anchor-point. Really besides that, there doesn't seem to be a justifiable reason for this.

As for Birth Control... no arguments at all there. I can't even think of a religious one off the top of my head. No embryo, no life, no soul. Nothing. Its just... nothing. It has so many benefits, including checking human population growth, and it also deals with hormone issues in women.

Not that I will ever have to deal with abortion in my own personal life unless the unthinkable happens (The R Word to someone I care about, yes I call it the R word to ward of moderators). Birth Control on the other hand... kinda essential. I have a few issues that might have genetic factors (I'm on the Autistic Spectrum) so... procreation is a bit hard to get behind. I had enough trouble with it as a kid, and risking creating someone with the same issues is... hard to consider.

Oh, and now i have to go find a Vampire. Easy way to stop breathing and still be able to complain... of course i still have to inhale air to talk... oh bother.
