I WARNED YOU PEOPLE! MOdern Warfare 2 would put it's bloated carcasse against LAN and dedicated servers, making everyone drop it. :/

At this rate we won't be able to have LAN parties without an internet connection.
And if you have one, having about a hundred people playing games via the internet simultaneously will be a serious drain on the broadband...

Are these guys retarded? They really think this game will sell without LAN and dedicated servers? No one plays RTS with matchmaking system. That's absurd. RTS games are best played in LAN parties. Well, another one of the buy list.

OT: If they have a reason for it, then great. Truthfully I'm not a huge fan of ded. servers and LAN, being brought up on console multiplayer, Blizzard, and MMOs. And seeing how TF2 and CSS work, where you can't easily find a game, I think I prefer the developers running servers that make finding a game easy. However, I don't see why you can't have both.

Resistance Fall of Man did that. The ranked stuff was all matchmade and the custom unranked games were hosted on generous people's PS3s acting as Dedicated servers.

It worked.

OT: I remember simpler times where myself and my nerd friends would chip in to buy a pc game and crack it for private LAN parties at school.... RTSs were always fun, especially when a copy of the crack slipped out of our circle of regular players and managed to circulate round the entire school.....
It happened with Star Wars Battlegrounds, Darkreign 2 and Age of empires 2.

Good times.

Always fun to be called round to the headteacher's office because your crack crashed the entire school's LAN.

I don't see why people are bitching about lack of dedis in AN RTS, a genre which does not need them.

Lack of LAN I can't understand (and I fervently support bitching about it), but people whining about the lack of dedis are probably still butt-hurt over the concept thanks to COD:MW2. This is not the same game, there is no need to complain about it here other than sheer stubbornness.

It's not about that. It's about the fact that matchmaking is becoming a common thing in PC gaming and that's disturbing.

Matchmaking has always BEEN a common thing in PC gaming. Hells alive, it's been around since DIABLO. This is not a new concept we're talking about.

Its not even a console port. It is made for the PC yet they choose to make it a console port. This is absolute bullshit and I don't think I will buy any games on the PC because I will boycot them all. FFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Um, doesn't Steam let you do all that stuff with dedicated servers and LAN?

I think now that Modern Warfare 2 has taught developers that they can still sell shitloads of units without dedicated server support, they don't even bother to implement it.

I'm not buying it or pirating it. But if the game is easier to play with the pirated copy, people will "buy" that instead.

Finding them without mods...what? The point of dedicated servers is that you can find exactly what you want. You want a specific map, search just for that. Don't want to go to a map again, then just don't bloody search for it. If you find a server that you really like, one with a good map rotation or good player base or the like, then you can favorite/bookmark/whatever you want to call it it and be able to play there again...forever. You don't have to play with potential idiots because the matchmaking system paired you with them. There's no reason to have matchmaking and no dedicated servers. Just wish publishers would get that through their opaque heads.

But I don't know the map names.
I'm just saying that I prefer the automatic game finder where stats are tracked and games are never modded, but I think that ded. servers should still be allowed. Hell, it worked for WC3.

Matchmaking works for an RTS to a degree. Blizzard's age old battle.net doesn't even use dedicated servers. You may still have a game list to choose off of, but they won't be dedicated servers, they`ll be P2P games I believe.

This, Diablo II doesn't use a dedicated server system, and yet it works perfectly to a degree.....until I jump in with my griefmancer [bone walls FTW].

but really though, I could see why to take LAN out of every other type of PC game, but a RTS? I really cant imagine it.

no seriously, I can't, even back to the days of Empire Earth me and my friends would set up LAN parties for our games.

just a thought, since consoles are losing split-screen and gaining LAN abilities, how long until we have a split screen game like CS:S on the PC?
