New standard? That parade of mediocrity?

Oh dear, oh dear.
Halo: combat evolved.
not halo 3.
Don't confuse the two.
You misunderstood me; the entire franchise is shallow.
So? Whats wrong with basics? I much prefer Halo because you can literally open it up out of the box and jump right in.

You could say its the core of all FPS to date.
You could also say that Twilight was the most successful Vampire film to date.

But why would you?
were not talking success were talking influence, as in you can't argue that most console shooters after Halo CE have not adopted regenerating health, holding to weapons at a time, and halos control scheme

I think it's for two reasons. One is that the game's controls feel perfect, and it also introduced forge, which is an amazing customization tool that definitely makes you want to play more.

Honestly? Play Reach and find out for yourself. Halo has always had a unique universe, even today. The series has gotten stale over the years, no question but with the overhaul done on Reach I guarantee that it will renew your faith in the series.

Look all you wish. If you're wanting a place for people to go gooey-eyed over Halo, might I suggest the Bungie Forums? Here we try to keep things a little more balanced.

Halo is still the one and only fun above realism shooter
Did you really just say that? REALLY?? REALLY!??!?!?!?!!!!?!!????!?!?

Anything with "Wolfenstein" in the title from Wolfenstein 3D until now
Doom
Doom 2
Doom 3
Rise of the Triad
Duke Nukem 3D
Heretic
Almost everything else based on the Doom engine (except Hexen)
Quake
Quake 2
Quake 3
Everything with "Unreal" in the title
Marathon
Marathon 2: Durandal
Goldeneye
Deus Ex
Deus Ex: Invisible War
Command and Conquer: Renegade
Timesplitters
Almost everything with "Half-Life" in the title
Prey
Saints Row
Saints Row 2
Black
Resistance: Fall of Man (Not so much in Resistance 2)
Red Faction: Guerrilla
Transformers: War for Cybertron
Gears of War
Gears of War 2
Dark Void

I could go on, but I think (hope) you get the point by now...

EDIT: Just to be clear, the emphasis of these games is fun over realism. The end result isn't necessarily what they wanted...

Because I had a point thats why.
When I said its the core I explained how that makes anything it does now unoriginal since they all come from the same game.

You don't think Twilight had an influence? Ok...

And I don't believe, as I said before, that Halo was the instigator. Purely the more popular.

No, you really didn't. You explained that your opinion was that its own sheer originality was killing it. I think a number of us disagree with your first principles.

The Bungie forums really aren't much better.

Unrelated observation: People here are extreemly defensive.

And Modern warfare isn't?

At least Halo 1 was inventive.
It gave a lot to the modern FPS.
Wait, let me check...

Nope, nowhere did I say Modern Warfare wasn't.
I bet you've never really played halo.

play halo 3 online with friend's for lets say more then a half hour.
It's good fun. Most fun i've ever had with an online shooter is in halo.

And that's fine. I prefer depth and story telling, but whatever. To each their own.
I understand that halo doesn't have a Shakespearian story but theres allot there if you give it a chance, especially in Halo 2 which imo has the most under rated story in video games. but i you don't like it thats fine. I like halo mainly because I think it has the best gameplay of any shooter (and I love the art style)

When Halo came out it set a new standard for FPS, and almot every shooter has taken after it since. You could say its the core of all FPS to date.
Bad wording, chum. I think you meant to say "You could say it's the core of all FPS since it was released". Pretty sure Halo isn't the core of, say, GoldenEye or Doom. I personally wouldn't say it was the "core" of anything; it did a couple of new things, which have since been mercilessly copied by other games, but it did not revolutionise the genre. The "core" of an FPS is 'dude gets gun, dude shoots other dudes', and that had been done a million times before Halo. All Halo did was add some bells and whistles.

ForensicYOYO said:
So all I ask of you is to tell me what Halo possibly offers that we haven't already seen? I just want to enjoy the series again before I turn into a hater of a game I truly loved.
Nothing much. Halo is, despite the aforementioned bells and whistles, a pretty generic shooter. The addition of vehicles is an interesting development, but beyond that there's very little that's really new. I did admire Bungie's attempt to diversify the franchise with Halo Wars, but I don't see much else they can do with it. I suppose they could make some sort of Halo puzzle game, but it would feel like what it was; a cheap attempt to milk the cash cow.

I noticed that most of the games in the later part of your list are third person. Just sayin' that there is a difference.

@The_root_of_all_evil: You misunderstand. Going gooey-eyed of Halo isn't even what this thread is about, anyway.

The point is, you at least appeared to be a-hatin', which the OP has specifically asked people not to do.

well I think halo is more fun than all of the games listed by quite a bit. (I think Half-life is a better game but not necessarily more fun.)
