New standard? That parade of mediocrity?

Oh dear, oh dear.
Halo: combat evolved.
not halo 3.
Don't confuse the two.
You misunderstood me; the entire franchise is shallow.
So? Whats wrong with basics? I much prefer Halo because you can literally open it up out of the box and jump right in.
And that's fine. I prefer depth and story telling, but whatever. To each their own.
I prefer that in my RPG's, but I don't usually expect a lot from shooters. Halo has a pretty good story though. Better than most at least.

But your right, everyone's got their prefrences.

@The_root_of_all_evil: You misunderstand. Going gooey-eyed of Halo isn't even what this thread is about, anyway.
It is when you state that the reason it's going downhill is that it was so wonderful in the first place.
The point is, you at least appeared to be a-hatin', which the OP has specifically asked people not to do.
First of all, I'm not some "gangsta" who is "a-hatin'".
Secondly, if the OP is stating an opinion as a fact, it's hardly hating to ask him to bring some evidence, is it?

well I think halo is more fun than all of the games listed by quite a bit. (I think Half-life is a better game but not necessarily more fun.)
See, I can go along with that. That's a good summation of how lukemdizzle feels. But trying to turn this thread into a Halo lovefest has NO discussion value.

And Modern warfare isn't?

At least Halo 1 was inventive.
It gave a lot to the modern FPS.
Wait, let me check...

Nope, nowhere did I say Modern Warfare wasn't.
I bet you've never really played halo.

play halo 3 online with friend's for lets say more then a half hour.
It's good fun. Most fun i've ever had with an online shooter is in halo.
You'd loose that bet; the Limited Edition box for Halo 3 is sitting next to me on the shelf as we type.
So i assume that you've played Halo CE.
How was that game shallow?

Halo takes more skill than any other shooter. I'm a cod4 man, but the balance in Halo allows a higher level of play. It's not simply see someone first and you kill them. There are no god weapons.

Well, most FPS's are different, that's why they were made. Some people like one in particular, some people like lots of them. I liked Halo 3 a lot, I never really played 1 or 2, but HAlo 3 did one thing really well. That was user generated content for a console game. I know that pc games of all types have tons of user made mods, and some of them actually work and aren't total failures of coding and graphics creation. But if you look at console games, you're lucky if you can even set up a relatively unique custom game mode in a private game lobby. Halo 3 let you create entirely new maps, and completely different game modes. It also had really good video replay support. Very few games have this. Black ops is going to have some video support, which would make it one of the first other games to have that. Really, its not that hard to add in, so it's about time it starts showing up in other games really.

tl;dr: Halo 3 had Forge (the map maker) and really good custom game type creation options. <- thats innovation.

The problem isn't necessarily with Halo, but with the industry's sycophantic attempts to clone and tweak the gameplay in a guise to capitalize on the established fanbase that Halo has created.

The same can be said about the litany of sequels, books, anime and failed movie attempt surrounding Halo 1.

The way you worded it (comparing it to Twilight and all that) at least meant it APPEARED to be hating, which was what I said in the first place. It looks like I misunderstood you, but quite frankly you were asking to be misunderstood.

That's all I have to say on the matter; other than that I find the series mediocre at best.

Honestly? Play Reach and find out for yourself. Halo has always had a unique universe, even today. The series has gotten stale over the years, no question but with the overhaul done on Reach I guarantee that it will renew your faith in the series.
I don't know why, but I feel like this guy gave me the answer I might have been looking for. Keep posting folks. This is getting interesting.

Well to this day I haven't played another FPS that integrates vehicles and and on-foot sections so seamlessly.
This.... and fun... Halo consistently delivers a fun and invigorating experience, both single player and multi-player. The MP is brought down a tad by it's community, but I would still put the Halo community ahead of the CoD community.

Many things that are attributed to Halo were done before in previous games, like being able to use the enemy's weapons, dual wield, regenerating shields, sticky grenades and vehicles, but Halo's combination of all of these elements is unparalleled.

Note that im not a hater on Halo. I actually love it! But heres my problem. When Halo came out it set a new standard for FPS, and almot every shooter has taken after it since. You could say its the core of all FPS to date. But what does Halo possibly have that no other shooter has now? I know this is mostly from my opinion but creativity wise, there isn't much that has been added. Or at least not original to Halo. I just feel like when I play it, its beginning to turn into a blurry screen and all I see are the basics of all guns, armor, and vehicles in todays FPS. So all I ask of you is to tell me what Halo possibly offers that we haven't already seen? I just want to enjoy the series again before I turn into a hater of a game I truly loved.
Halo was one of the first games to introduce people to that dancing ritual they do in FPS, basically you get shot and you can still turn around and have a little dance with your opponent and win the fight due to the huge health, up till that point in time gaming was all about getting the jump on the other team fragging them.... once you were caught out you were dead but Halo switched it up by having you need to unload over an entire clip into a person to kill them.

It also had some crazy ideas Microsoft wouldn't let Bungie implement, like each game you'd start off in a foehammer being dropped off at your destination.

were not talking success were talking influence, as in you can't argue that most console shooters after Halo CE have not adopted regenerating health, holding to weapons at a time, and halos control scheme
You don't think Twilight had an influence? Ok...

And I don't believe, as I said before, that Halo was the instigator. Purely the more popular.
Twilight is no ware near as influential in the field of literature as halo has been in video games. halo has proven to be more than a fad. also you can think that halo didn't instigate these influences but I you'd be wrong. not to say your opinion about halo is wrong your entitled to that but halo was the game that launched these changes. at the time it came out Halo CE was original and extremely successful so everybody copied it. that sort of thing happens all the time. just look at the Modern warfare series

I reckon that because "everybody" loved Halo so much, everybody thinks any FPS after Halo takes after the basics that it set out (like a subconscious Halo bias or something). But what about an FPS that people loved before Halo? You could use the same arguement and say that Halo took after that game. Or whatever that game was, all FPS's after it used the basics of it.

If you get what I mean...

I think it makes sense...

Does it?

I don't care about anything else ,the story is epic (space bio engineered soldiers created to fight the coallition of aliens destroying humanity planet by planet ) faultless solo and faultless multi ,one of the best shooter solo campaign around . Halo has something for every one!
